Its illegal to be taking illegal drugs, society is comfortable with smoking, alcohol, sugar, high fat diets democracy allows it, yet they all cause deaths. We as a country have voted someone in power that makes drugs illegal, DUI, speeding, Murder, Rape are all Illegal. You do understand this. We here so many people say to Muslims if you want to live in australia live by the rules we set, well guess what society has set the rule that drugs are illegal, if you disagree go and loby your politician to see if society will want to change that or dont live in Australia pretty simple.

It's also illegal to walk down the street with no money in your pocket

It's illegal to drive a car bare feet

It's illegal to swear in public (hmm that happens at all games a lot)

It's illegal to abuse people online

....

Man we are going to need a lot of police and jails to fix this hey

Drug use is social - health problem and yes it it's illegal but ffs the church committed sexual abuse in churches and not one church had been held to account ........is that illegal ?

Part of the problem with the war on drugs mantra is that it fails terribly .......yet we keep going back to it

It's human behaviour, social and health problem and needs multi faceted approach to fix it

By the way it will never be stopped ....most people will try drugs at some point

Everyone has a choice in life. If you`re a spinless wonder who needs a substance in life to enjoy yourself, you`re beyond help.
You know whats in alcohol, do you know what`s in coke/ice/pills/mdma/heroin?
If you're just going to take a different tack rather than acknowledge a point then continuing with this is, ironically, pointless. "Cheers"

Yes I do, but this situation is about the AFL setting an example, for them not to throw the book at any player that is doing this is ridiculous, these players have one enormous influence over the youth that follow the game, the AFL need to crack down so hard on this crap it will make the players head spin, 12 month bans what ever it takes to send the message out that it is simply not acceptable to be taking illegal drugs.

What about the media's role in this? Carlisle did this in private and just sent the video to a mate who then leaked it to someone else who leaked it to ACA.

It would have stayed private if it wasn't leaked to ACA or they decided not to air it.

Was there really any need to air that story? It was a pathetic beat up that was only run for a cheap ratings grab and because Carlisle was traded to St Kilda earlier in the day and someone at ACA clearly has some sort of agenda against St Kilda.

The timing of it happening the day he is traded to St Kilda is too much of a coincidence to be ignored.

Would the story have been aired if he was traded to Hawthorn? With the reporter being a Hawks supporter I doubt it.

The pathetic Australian media need to take some blame for this as well.

I say this a lot

I do talks in the community on drugs and alcohol ....in my role as a counsellor and community educator

The damage alcohol does far outweighs any other substance, I even suspect Carlisle - if it's him probably had a lot to drink before he did what he did (in in fact it's drugs) .......

My observation is I think the Essendon players have been under a great strain over the ASADA - WADA thing for three years .....do you blame them for letting their hair down a bit

We are so overreacting to this

I also think as juddy said gambling is far bigger social problem in society and the AFL than illicit drug use

But hey why let the facts get in the way of say a piece of grainy vision

Actually if Essendon players are stupid enough to be doing drugs after all the ASADA crap then I would blame them, even more than players from other clubs.
Given the huge salaries AFL players are on, surely they can stay off the drugs for the 10 years their careers are going to last. I understand there is a lot of peer pressure but honestly, they are supposed to be disciplined and be capable of making the right choices. I teach 6 year olds and they know right from wrong.

Carlisle:
Had a SHOT at Essendon...
Thought he would have a SNIFF somewhere else..
Lets hope the Saints give him a BASH

Something needs to be done regarding disclosure. StKilda deserved better. McConville should not be allowed to continue as a player agent.

They must be loaded to snort coke all day long, it's a bloody expensive habit which is why AFL players on big salaries can afford it.

A bit of an overreaction, if you suspended or sacked every AFL player that has taken illicit drugs in the off season we wouldn't have a competition next year.

Carlisle has already apologised for the incident, as long as this isn't an ongoing problem I don't see the need to punish him or St Kilda for it, it was a silly mistake and hopefully he'll learn from it.

It's really no worse than Hodge's drink driving incident and he wasn't suspended or sacked so why should Carlisle be?
I weep for the this game...Yes, we all make mistakes, errors of judgement, drink too much, act like a dickhead and do things we later regret, Carlisle just came from a club that HE berated on field for being a basket case and yet what do we see? Rumour has it that after meeting Carlisle, North Melbourne thought him to be too much of a flog to recruit to their club. Sounds like they were on the money.
According to the Saints he was doing nothing more than over indulging in "Cream Buns"...

er... that article (from a very conservative UK paper no less) has two linked sources, both of which are broken and provide absolutely no proof of the claim they are making. Forgive me if I prefer to see something a bit more authorative.

And please, have a think about why reported drug use might be low in a country with such draconion measures.

This is the last post I'll make on this as it's OT, but here's REAL data over a valid time period of what happens when you move from a criminalisation model to a decriminalisation model.

Take it in

Whilst I agree with the general gist of your posts, The Guardian is anything but a conservative paper.. In fact the polar opposite!

"The St Kilda Football Club is incredibly disappointed in Jake Carlisle and this behaviour is not acceptable.

Our Board, players and staff are united in the direction we are going and we will not allow this progress to be undermined.

Jake has signed a contract with the St Kilda Football Club but he is aware that he is now on notice and behaviour of this type will not be tolerated.

Every player on our list has an obligation to live up to our values and to commit themselves to delivering to their best ability, on and off the field.

But Jake will start at our club next month with an added obligation to prove that he will live within those values in order to fulfil his potential with St Kilda."

- St Kilda CEO Matt Finnis

I didnt see anyone from the Media Snorting anything. Carlisle is on $700k a year and is dumb enough to Snapchat himself doing a line, dont think you can blame the Media for this one.

I like how the article up on AFL.com talks about how he's got to front up and cop a lecture from Nick Reiwoldt about this sort of stuff. The IRONY of Nick Reiwoldt hectoring others about imagery getting out through social media! Jake would be within his rights to laugh in his face and hold up a hastily-googled image of Nick's dong!

My ex works in the media. The parties they throw are unreal and they're constantly offered free drugs... it's hypocrisy at the very least. I've received snap chats myself of the "party favours" they get offered. Difference is if I'd sent it to ACA they'd most likely recognise someone (or a client of their network) and decide not to air it.

But it's illegal, I couldn't care less what people do in their spare time and don't care to judge. We have a big drug problem though and it's wrong to start just accepting this as "he can do what he wants in his spare time" no it's actually illegal and if we are just going to accept this then lets all just have some coke and move on.
It's stupid that it's illegal. Who did Jake hurt?

I would have through he would be a good person to council him as he has also experienced the rath of social media.

I dunno, himself....I honestly don't know what my thoughts are about this anymore. I guess if he isn't hurting anyone it shouldn't be. There's a lot of things that are illegal which could fall into that category though.
