2008 National Draft

The Carlton Lions have moved to shore up its midfield depth as well as its forward line in the short to medium term at the completion of the 2008 National Draft. With an ageing forward line in Richardson, Rocca and Bradshaw, the Lions were rapt to secure boom recruit Jack Watts and tall forward Scott Clouston with their first and fifth picks.

National Draft Selections

2. Jack Watts (Sandringham Dragons) - The jewel in the crown of this year’s draft, Watts surprisingly fell to number 2 , when Rich went at Pick#1. The Lions could hardly believe their luck, securing the perfect replacement for ageing forward Anthony Rocca. Watts is an athletic, strong marking tall forward who won the Larke Medal as the best player in Division One as well as claiming All-Australian honours. He looks to be the lynchpin of the Lions’ forward line for many years to come. (Pick 1)

18. James Strauss (Oakleigh Chargers) - Strauss is classy mover who will most likely settle across half-back at the outset of his career. He has good place, loves to run with the ball and kicks with great depth. He should see senior action in 2009. (Pick 19)

21. Shaun McKernan (Calder Cannons)- Brother of Corey who boasts many of the same attributes – massive hands, a prodigious kick and an ability to play ruck, forward or back. The Lions have had a shortage in ruckmen over the past few years and they may be hoping that McKernan will add, at the very least, depth to their ruck division. The Lions now boast a competent ruck division with Seaby, Renouf, Campbell and now McKernan all expected to be vying for selection in 2009. (Pick 28)

37. Steven Motlop (Wanderers NT) - Brother of Daniel, who is a freakish goal-kicker and boasts freakish skills. Rated by some as better than Daniel at the same age. Carlton Lions recruiting manager Robert Shaw said the club was thrilled to have drafted Motlop. "He's an instinctive, exciting player, a dead ringer for Daniel at the same age," Shaw said. Motlop could easily have been drafted higher than No. 39 but for having a shoulder injury at the time of the national championships. Still too early to tell if the Lions had unearthed a player with the ability of a Cyril Rioli, but the Lions believe Motlop's skill around goal has to be seen to be believed. (Pick 39)

53. Scott Clouston (Suncoast Lions) – A mature aged 194 cm forward whose selection by the Lions no doubt raised a few eyebrows. However of their seven draftees, Clouston is the only one with senior AFL experience with two games. After playing most of last year as a key defender, Clouston was given opportunity to impress by playing in all the preseason games. Playing for Suncoast, Clouston was moved into the forward line and it seemed a better way to utilise his massive tank. He was steady until about the midseason when he started coming on in leaps and bounds. He was learning how to find the ball and becoming a regular multiple goal kicker, many of which were from long range.

69. Liam Shiels (Eastern Ranges) - Youngest player at this year’s draft and qualified for it, by only two days. A midfielder who at 17 will complete Year 12 at Aquinas College and will not play in the Lions’ maroon, navy blue and gold for 2009. The Lions will be hoping he follows the path of Xavier Ellis, who took a couple of years to settle into the Lions line-up, but is now making a regular contribution. Shiels was widely tipped to go in the mid-thirties and the Lions, by now chasing a midfielder were surprised to see him still there at their next pick at #69. (Pick 34)

84. Taylor Hunt (Sandringham Dragons) - From the same club as Jack Watts, Hunt is a fast, ball carrying player who can play in defence, on-ball and even up forward. He has fantastic speed and a strong body. The Lions nearly took him at Pick #69, and were rapt to pick up at #84, (a good thirty five to forty places after where many had predicted he would go. (Pick 49)

Pre-Season Draft

2. Ashley McGrath
The 26 year old 113 game veteran has had a new lease of life at the Carlton Lions and is looking extremely fit. The Lions saw him as the ideal replacement for recently retired Jeff Farmer min the forward pocket, but instead, he could take on some midfield work in Season 2009, after spending a great deal of 2008 in the unaccustomed role of a defender.

15. Robert Campbell
Taken as a second round draft pick, Campbell came to terms with the Lions several weeks before the actual draft and will probably move straight into the number one ruck role for Season 2009, adding to their depth and flexibility.

Carlton freshens their list for 2010

The Carlton Lions have announced the re-signing for Season 2010 of a number of players with midfielder Rhys Palmer and forward Quinten Lynch signing new five year deals with the club on Friday. The Lions have also manged to secure young forward Lachlan Henderson from the Vultures also on a 5 year deal. Brendan Whitecross and Josh Hunt have also signed multi-year deals.

Lions officials are confident that with the addition of players such as Alwyn Davey (from Collingwood), James Hawksley (Brisbane), Daniel O'Keefe (Western Vultures) and Will Minson (Brisbane), they will put up a better showing than they did in what was an injury-ravaged 2009. With the extra depth also afforded by the return of Richardson, Palmer and Hunt from injury, the competition for places in the senior side will be intense.

The Lions say farewell to a number of players including Daniel Bradshaw (Western Vultures), Scott Clouston (Western Vultures), James Polkinghorne (Collingwood), Michael Braun (retired), Anthony Rocca (retired), Cameron Wight, Wayde Skipper, Adam Campbell and Ryan Brabazon (all delisted).

The Lions' focus now turns to the National Draft where they are likely to use at least Picks #1, #8, #27 and #45, depending on the results of further re-signings.

Carlton re-sign four players and rookie another.

The Carlton Lions have announced the re-signings of several players with Ashley McGrath, Joel Patfull and Rhan Hooper all agreeing to two year contracts with the club. Daniel Merrett has also agreed to a three year contract. Kristian Thornton has been re-rookied and at this stage is the only rookie to be named by the club.

Ashley McGrath was the subject of a concerted recruiting attempt by the Sydney Broncos, but the Broncos' reluctance to offer anything longer than a two year contract, saw McGrath eventually decide to stay with the Carlton Lions.

Scully goes at Number 1

Paul Gough
Sportal/exclusive to carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

The Carlton Lions have used their first pick in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft to select highly rated midfielder Tom Scully.

Scully a natural left-footer, is a prolific ball winner with extraordinary endurance. He can use the ball to affect on either side of his body and is hard at the contest.

During 2009 he captained Vic Metro and was named their most valuable player after averaging 25 disposals (76% efficiency) and five clearances per match. He was the leading hard ball gets player for the Championships averaging five per match and ranked second overall for clearances behind Tasmania’s Ryan Harwood.

Tom followed up his impressive 2008 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships with another standout carnival in 2009 which culminated with All-Australian honours for a second consecutive year.

He also played nine matches with the Dandenong Stingrays in 2009 and none better than his season opener against Gippsland where he gathered 34 possessions, eight tackles and eight marks in a best on ground performance.

Rohan excited to be at Lions

Paul Gough
Sportal/exclusive to carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

New Carlton Lions recruit Gary Rohan says he never imagined he would be taken in the first round of the AFL Draft, let alone in the top 10.

But a stellar national carnival with Vic Country led to All-Australian selection and the flame-haired half forward from Cobden was suddenly on every recruiter's radar.

He was eventually taken by the Lions at No.8 at the draft.

"I never thought it would happen," Rohan said after meeting his new Lions teammates shortly after his drafting.

"I had a good year and got a heap of support from people back in Cobden and my family and friends."

The Geelong Falcons product said there was a simple catalyst for his rapid development from a shy country footballer into one of the nation's hottest young talents.

"Well, I grew. That was a start," he said.

"I was a shy kid but I grew some confidence from playing in the seniors [at Cobden].

"I was always up the front, asking questions and instead of being at the back of the group, I was leading the way. I stood out more than when I was just hanging back."

Following the AFL Under-18 Championships, Rohan said his confidence was at a high - "I thought I could do anything then"

Lions' coach Michael Nunan said Rohan's late development meant the club was still unsure where he would be best suited at AFL level.

"At 17 or 18, you don't know whether they're going to grow; obviously they're going to put on weight but how much, you don't know," he said.

"It is a bit of a lottery at times but Gary's last eight months in the Geelong Falcons system really excelled.

"We'll probably have him as a half-forward, half-back.

"Gary could develop into a midfielder but we're just not sure. Obviously he's got a lot of upside and a lot of work to do but he's an exciting talent."

Lions rapt to get Black
5:30:25 AM Monday 7th December, 2009
Paul Gough
Sportal/exclusive to carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

The Carlton Lions have used their third pick (Selection 27) in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft to select athletic key forward Aaron Black.

Black spent 2009 playing in Western Australia for Peel Thunder. He didn't participate in the Under 18 Championships, but a strong second half of the season in the WAFL saw him come into the spotlight.

Playing 13 games for the Peel Thunder Colts, and even 2 for the Peel Thunder Seniors, he managed to kick a few bags of goals. The highlight of Aaron Black's season was in round 14 against Subiaco. It was wet and windy but he still managed to amass 29 disposals, took 14 grabs, and kicked an amazing 6.4. Amazingly his opponents in Subiaco kicked the same score as Black, but Black was more accurate.

Many see him as a tall forward, but Black showed his versatility having spent time in the midfield and ruck as well. His agility and awareness are the strengths of his game. In particular, his excellent hands are a feature. In round 23 playing in the Peel Thunder Seniors team against Fremantle, he gathered 26 possessions, 7 marks, and 13 hit outs, in a rucking role. His great year saw him finish 5th in the Peel Thunder Colts Best and Fairest, and also earned him an invitation to the 2009 Draft Camp. It was here he really started to stake his claim for selection.

Standing at 192 cm tall, and weighing 82 kg, Aaron Black finished equal third in the standing vertical jump. He also managed to finish equal second in the new kicking test. He also finished in the top 26 percent for repeat sprints and vertical jump (top 10 per cent) important tools for his position.

Lions delist three and promote one

The Carlton Lions have announced that rookie Kristin Thornton will not be offered a contract for Season 2011. Veteran players Matthew Richardson and Nic Fosdike who did not play in Season 2010 have also been delisted.

Young rookie ruckman Sam Jacobs has been promoted to the senior list on a two year contract.

Carlton Lions management are currently holding discussions with Jack Watts, Tom Scully, Gary Rohan and Jake Carlisle with a view to extending their contracts beyond the end of the 2011 season.

Discussions with Carlton's other fourteen uncontracted players are believed to begin soon.

The Carlton Lions have announced that their former No 1. draft pick Jack Watts, James Strauss, 2010 best and fairest midfielder Michael Rischitelli and midfielder Xavier Ellis have been re-signed. All four have committed to five year deals, with some like Strauss, preferring long term tenure to dollars.

In other news Steven Motlop has left the Carlton Lions and has signed with Geelong, where he will be picked up in the pre-season draft.

Several Carlton Lions players have attracted strong interest from other clubs. "In one way we're pleased about this." said long serving coach Michael Nunan. "It shows the strength of our recruiting over the past few seasons."

Negotiations are continuing with several uncontracted Lions players.

Lions re-sign three more players
5:30:25 AM Friday 22nd October 2010
Paul Gough
Sportal/exclusive to carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

The Carlton Lions have announced the re-signings of three more players with backmen Josh Hunt, Sean Dempster and young ruckman Shaun McKernan agreeing to terms yesterday. Hunt and Dempster have agreed to two year contracts, while McKernan is believed to have signed a five year contract. McKernan came to terms with the club fairly quickly after the St Kilda Titans secured the services of former Lion ruckman Mark Seaby in return for their Pick 23.

McKernan will now most likely lead the Lions ruck division for 2011 with Brent Renouf, an opportunity he had become accustomed to, after Seaby's injury last season. While the Lions' ruck division does look a little thin with the departure of Seaby, the Lions do have forward Quinten Lynch as a third option.

Lions management have also confirmed their 2011 list is almost complete, with only a couple of players still to be re-signed. The Lions have delisted troubled small forward Rhan Hooper who has walked away from the game and with three National Draft Picks in the top 25, look set to add more youth to what is already one of the youngest lists in the league.

Hocking ready for big season in 2011
8:15:33 AM Saturday 6th November 2010
Paul Gough
Sportal/exclusive to carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

After capping off an impressive individual 2010 season, recently traded Heath Hocking says he has already begun putting in the preparation required to give himself every opportunity to improve next season.

“I was pretty happy with my season this year but I am definitely looking to improve in terms of my consistency,” Hocking told carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

“I didn’t finish the year as well as I would have hoped and I guess that just comes down to having a big preseason and training to finish off a season properly. Despite that fact I was still quite shocked to be offered up for trade by Melbourne. I guess they wanted more experienced bodies, but in the end I was happy to have my contract and pay-packet extended and I'm looking forward to pulling on the maroon, gold and navy blue jumper when the season comes around.

“I think that having no injuries is also a big part in being successful so looking after my body and getting all the preparation right is going to be a big focus heading into the preseason.”

Hocking has been a regular visitor to the Princes Park gym over the players’ break to ensure he is in top shape when preseason kicks off late next week.

“I think we have got a week and a half left until we get straight back into it and I guess all the players have been doing a little bit during our break which is mandatory to ensure we keep fit and come back to start the preseason in a reasonable state,” Hocking said.

“I'm looking forward to getting Michael Nunan as coach and it is a fresh start kind of scenario so I'm really looking forward to it.”
