Whatever setback he had, both he and Austin are keen on hitting the AFL/NAB season at full force. Austin was powering through laps of PP and really appears to acknowledge that his time could be nigh if he doesn’t break into the 22 at the start of the season. Luke Mitchell was also pushing himself and doing squats and lunges whilst the rest were doing drills – perhaps a groin/thigh strain – but he wasn’t moving particularly freely.Wasn't Touhy in the rehab group with the knee brace? Who was it if not him?Armfield, Touhy and Duigan all very content to take the game on.
Training started off with some pseudo-beep-test happening, lasted a very short time before the boys broke into more full ground drills.
Judd, Austin, Henderson, Joey Dare and about 4 others were in the recovery group.
Kreuzer a notable absentee.
The first drill was a half-ground, high-pressure drill with forwards leading from the goal square. The smalls on the wing were pressured and forced to share the ball before delivering inside 50. There was a bit of niggle and a tonne of passion with Bower and Waite having a bit of a dip at the behind post following a decent marking exchange
After this they broke into a scratch match, Orange bibs led by Murph – Blue shirts by Gibbs.
- The drill showed how reliant we are on too few players to dispose accurately into the F50.
Armfield, Touhy and Duigan all very content to take the game on. Hampson and Warnock lead exceptionally well – Hampson moving far more naturally than this time last year in a FWD role. Setanta the standout (full) forward of the drill. Walker appears fully confident in his body – was content to launch at every ball and a few stuck - seems content with the club acceding to his wishes of more time in the F50. Watson’s pace, whilst not blistering, will stand up to AFL level – of that I have few doubts. Labi’s movement and cleanliness below his knees was something to get excited about – probably won’t be an AFL level player for a prolonged period, but definitely has the tools to light it up in a few NAB Cup matches and take it from there. Still very, very raw though.
The boys were having a dip – showed as much, if not more intensity than you would likely see in a NAB Cup match – was really quite a treat to see. There was a massive tackle at the interchange bench that got the 30 or so strong crowd going. Blue’s movement of the football especially along the Northern side was absolutely outstanding – if we can maintain movement as such in real matches we should simply be able to dismantle the lesser teams. Scotland off of HBF, to Gibbs wide on the wing, to Waite leading deep onto the flank – Absolutely sublime stuff. Jamison (who led Orange’s defence) was solid as a rock, White, at CHB looked very good as well – exceptional reading of the play to make Jamo’s job that much easier. Touhy, again, very content to take the game on – Busted out a lovely goose-step on the Southern side wing before taking a bounce and hitting a target about 40 metres down field. The MC seem set on Yarran off of a HBF/BP – He was exposed, time and time again by Betts – not realising that awarding #19 with as little as a metre or two results in Eddie getting the ball. Probably a good apprenticeship nevertheless, as Eddie truly is our go-to man and a good hit-up target to boot. Yarran was learning from one of the most versatile small forwards in the game at present. Yazz did make up for it with a stellar chase down of a gangly Bray, suggesting that at least his application was still 100% even if his discipline was not. ‘Legs’ Twomey with a tonne of voice and enthusiasm. Appears to be a hard runner and really nimble. (Got absolutely pantsed by Garlett at one stage in a later drill)
Thereafter, the boys jumped into a goal-kicking drill where defenders lobbed high balls to the forwards, allowing themselves enough airtime to apply pressure to the forwards. Our kicking, was, more or less, shocking. I was sitting in the pocket – so it would’ve appeared worse – but for instance Hampson, on the run, or Joseph when forced onto his wrong, are virtually 10% chances. Nevertheless, the tempo they maintained was huge and still being a good 2 months out from the season proper, I’m sure there’s still some focus on the aerobic aspect.
The last significant drill of the morning was a defensive tactics drill, specifically aimed at quickly setting up to defend after scoring a behind. Ball movement was very hesitant, but that is probably a sign that the drill is serving its purpose.
Touhy entrusted with the kickouts for his side Gibbs appears to have a very solid knowledge of where and how to move around the D50 – his apprenticeship has served him well and because of his ability to find space he was the choice for the first target almost everytime. Curnow a little unsure of himself at this early stage – also not particularly agile or athletic – perhaps he was another of those hard, uncompromising players that EP alludes to, the one’s Ratten has been demanding for some time now.Probably the main thing to note from the session was the tempo with which it was all conducted. Really fast and furious – but perhaps they were putting on a show for a smaller than expected Australia Day crowd. Intensity and physicality were way up perhaps at the expense of skill-level.

As HARKER says, Murphy isn't looking like he's in the happiest of spaces right now - The sooner he commits - one way or the other - the sooner he plays good football. Make up your mind now, buddy, so we can make peace and get on with the season!
Also interesting to not that Garlett and Collins were teamed up throughout all of training, and trained away from the main group. It appeared to be aimed at developing their core strength – They did a tonne of wrestling, grappling, and tight confined ballwork. Collins appears no heavier than Garlett and it’s apparent that he’ll need to put on some size to maintain an AFL career – However, in the drills he was participating in, his skills were top notch and arguably the standout (along with Yarran who just doesn’t miss). Collins is a ‘footballer’ and whilst I’m not sure what he’ll offer our side as yet – he could really turn out to be a gem.
