What has happened to Gerard Whately this year? I used to think he was measured and well thought out with whatever subjects he would tackle, but this year he seems to be leading the charge in anything anti Carlton and he's doing it without his usual sense or anything resembling rational thoughts.

He used to be the voice of reason on 360 making it watchable but is now on par with Slobbo making that show unbearable to the point I have now stopped watching it.

Did Sos or Bolts or MLG run over his dog or something at the start of the year?

This wont be a popular view but so be it

Weitering has been mismanaged by Carlton.

I've previously said (ironically) in reply to the chorus of naysayers about Weitering - lets trade him to Geelong or Hawthorn for a late second round pick - where they would promptly make him their #1 intercept marking and rebounding kicking defender and he would be AA for the next 10 years.

Why do I say mismanaged ? because he has been set up to fail firstly playing him as a forward. then bringing him back very early from a serious shoulder injury. then making him accountable for #1 big body defender - and depriving him of chance to play his natural game as an intercept marking and rebound kicking defender.

Carlton is wasting Weitering in order to get something out of Plowman and Marchbank and make up for Jones and inadequacies.

I'd be playing Jones and Rowe as the bigger bodied defenders and Weitering as the intercept marking defender and #1 rebound kick - and making Marchbank/Plowman much more accountable. Let Plowman and Marchbank fight for a position against Williamson and McCreadie - both of whom will offer more for longer imo.
Interesting theory, to what end though?

It makes utterly no sense to do what you've described to him for no reason.

I'm sure Bolton and co had a lot of reasons - the chief reason being they thought they had a once in a generation player who could play anywhere on anyone as a first year player as if he was a developed hard body 6 year veteran. To have your pick#1 out recovering from a shoulder injury -he copped for showing outstanding courage btw - was too hard for Carlton at the time - so the next 'idea' Bolton came out with was 'learning to endure'.

Tell an 18 yr old that learning to endure is part of the game - and he will try and do it. Instead of being cautious - Carlton was brave. I see similar brave decisions being made with Kennedy/Marchbank and even Kreuzer as far as injury management goes this year.

Who knows wether learning to endure was /is part of the pre-season culture Bolton and his advisiors have brought in - to what effect? So many pre-season injuries and still most players look under muscled and under weight compared to opposition players.

Lots of learning going on at Carlton - lots.

Exactly :thumbsu:

Would have preferred a rational counter argument Soap...to make me feel a tad less itchy and scratchy

Whilst I have no great interest in win/losses I do have enormous interest in how well the kids are bing developed and managed- Weitering is my first serious red flag. Second red flag was all the injuries we have had and how the Club managed them...

I suspect Craig leaving was a big loss ( and why did he leave again?) - because quite frankly the bloke Bolton is leaning on for advice is a total nuff nuff as far as having a clue about coaching. Barker needs to go - sooner rather than later.

Sorry JAB, want me to disagree?

I never liked the Weitering move forward. I said on numerous occassions let him learn and develop in one role. When he is ready then he can be moved around. I don't think they will do it again.

IMO the "kids" need to settle. Dow on the ball, LOB on a wing, Fisher HF/On Ball, SPS the same etc. Get experience, confidence and then they can be trialled elsewhere. I have the same issue with Garlett. The guys is a HBF. Leave him there until he is ready.

Injuries? Well I have no idea but something needs to happen

I am a supporter of Bolton but have no doubt there is a lot of "learning on the job" going on at the moment

I’ve spoken to a senior recruiter from another club who was very very bullish on Jacob Weitering and called him a once in a generation type player and I’ve spoken to him recently and he’s said “Carlton have broken the unbreakable”.

Totally agree . Thought he was good on the ABC . 360 is the AFL,s flagship , info control , agenda manipulate program. I guess he has a boss and follows the script .

Bloody whinge fest this week. Some on here will enjoy it.

This is the same people that last week that said we are on track but a week later question what we are doing
I enjoyed this podcast , some very good points raised re the medical staff, team structures and player development.

Didnt strike me as a whinge fest at all.

With Gibbs I think the hope was that between Cripps & Ed playing, Kreuz & Doc flying and in career best form, a fit Kennedy & Lang joining our midfield plus a(nother) preseason & some natural progression into SPS, Fisher & Cuningham that we'd be able to cover his loss through the middle.

Similar progression from Charlie, Willo, Pickett, Weitering, Marchbank, Plowman, Harry, Byrne, Jack & Macreadie would also make a difference. Then we add some pretty handy draft picks on top...

At the end of the trade period I wasn't worried about our 2018 on field performances in the AG (after Gibbs) era.

Unfortunately what looked alright on paper 6 or 7 months ago is a far cry from our current situation, we've been decimated by injury and nothing is following the script. I guess, like all good stories, there's got to be a bit of hardship and drama to be overcome to make the ending worthwhile... can you imagine if Andy Dufresne was found not guilty? I like to think we've got our own Marylyn poster up now and that rock hammer is looking pretty worn down...
Worse than decimated. Thats one in ten. Would mean we had 4.5 injured players. What i would give to have 40 players to pick from.

It's just another way to sook about our current predicament without really adding anything new or interesting to the conversation.

The idea that we could 'lose a generation of supporters' demonstrates how fickle he thinks we are.

People walking out early when they can see their team is in the middle of a shellacking is nothing new.

If the win is well out of reach and the situation still worsening, I figure f*** it, might as well at least have an easy run to the train and spare myself the ignominy of riding with a trainload of gloating opposition fans.
It has nothing to do with wanting to bail on our club, as Wallsy insinuates.

I doubt he is broken. That takes many years in a poor environment.
Look at the way Weitering responded in Frankston, smashed them.
He is just working through a slump in confidence and the club appear to be giving him the time to do it.

The other thing about weitering is we may be wanting to teach him new things by getting him to play other positions early on, like forward and as an accountable defender.

We KNOW he can play the intercept role...but you don't want him being a player that can't do anything but that role.

Not too dissimilar to Clarkson sometimes throwing roughead into defence, Gunston has been played both ends and so has Sicily. They did it also with frawley a bit and schoenmakers.

Bolton learned from Clarkson...in theory I don't mind us trying to teach him new roles...hopefully knowing he can always go back to his intercept role and still perform there.

Weitering does appear to have gone backwards... shame he looked unbelievable in his first year. Hopefully its just a set back

It's only been in the week where he got criticism from Carlton supporters for getting the Curnows dragged back before the appeals tribunal.

Before that he was fine. He's had his ego damaged.

Not broken. Just need to be patient whilst he runs a de-frag on his motherboard, and services his main frame.

Agree with a 109 point loss following the North effort about the only aspect I have total confidence in the club at the moment is trust in SOS.

Though talent without development.....

I’d be tempted to do a Melbourne and get rid of our defensive coach whoever that may be its a total shambles.

We should be being ultra conservative with injuries given where we are at this year. We seem to be bringing people back too soon and that has the potential to lead to longer term injuries.
