The main thing I notice between their list and our list. Mongrel. We have a couple they have it in spades.
There have been a few sides who have risen from the bottom to the top over the last 10 or so years but it's more the exception than the rule. There have been far more teams who have been stuck down the bottom/middle than who have hit rock bottom and risen.
The AFL could fix it but they are too shit scared of tanking allegations and the betting agencies breathing down their necks over it along with the media. Only way to fix it is to give the top sides less, bottom sides more and not worry about tanking at all.
Hawks hit the bottom at the right time when there was a wealth of talent, they then drafted really well and it set up their foundations to build a side.
There are two new sides in the comp since then, widening the distance between teams picks, doesn't sound a lot but it is.
At this stage it appears we are doing the best we can. Hopefully that will do the job. unfortunately we're paying for quite a few years of lean drafting.
I'm not convinced that trading out top end talent will help us. I think we should seriously look at trading our mid range players.
If Gibbs wants to go he may be better to go as a free agent, would net us a compensation right after our first you would imagine. Then again if the price is right, it couldn't hurt.

I think hawthorn gave up McPharlin for croad.ln the long run was a bad mistake.

Also worth noting the roughhead and franklin draft, hawks had a compensation pick which helped them immensely. Unfortunately that was fased out when we were last at the bottom. Walker the exception, but we missed other draft picks that year if i remember correctly ,with the draft exclusions?

Walker was our PP the previous year, and we were otherwise locked out of his draft, but we locked ourselves out in 2004 by winning 10 games with Pagan's top-ups and using our pick 9 on Jordan Russell!

The draft was a joke back then. You could still elevate from your under 19 team IIRC.

Enter...Luke livingston, pick 4! In 2000. We missed daniel kerr, drew petrie, shawn burgoyne, daniel cross, Scott thompson, to name a few. Managed to snare Trent Sporn at 11 though!

Love Wiggo but he didn't exactly justify that pick either. Shocking draft for us.

I remember the club saying that they had hopes that Sporn might even grow into a key position player. Very strange selection.

None of them would have played 150 games for us. Our development of players was worse than our recruitment.
Quick way to depress any long time Carlton supporter that remember this draft and lived through it afterwards.

At the time the deal looked like a good one for us... tall forward, inside mid for the grunt work and a winger.
The inside mid isn't working out and the tall forward has an attitude problem.

why aren't we allowed to make our draft picks in hindsight?
Livingstone was destroyed by injury, Pagan broke Sporn. Wiggins was not awful value for #15, played some great games of football for us.
