Carlton player Liam Jones refusing vax - Update: Jones retires from AFL

It's not that complex, look at the two options you wrote, imagine a mid-point between the two where it's mandatory for certain industries and occupations. Much like the annual flu booster.

It’s hard to imagine in any sane society tbh. The flu booster has never been mandatory for anyone.

I assume they are vaccinated? Given the fact we know the vaccine doesn't stop transmission how can you ever feel safe with them leaving the house? You have no idea what interactions or group gatherings the people they will see have been doing. It's all a risk my friend - there are no guarantees in this life.
They are (kids aren’t because they’re not yet old enough) but their vaccination status is one thing, everyone else’s matters too. I don’t see how you can’t grasp that.

I’ll make it very simple. Data shows that at the very least the vaccines reduce your likelihood of serious disease and being a burden on the healthcare system and also reduce your likelihood of catching the thing in the first place. If you’re statistically 4-10 times more likely to get infected with this thing and you’re going to be in the community, your vax status matters to everyone. Don’t bludge on the majority for your protection.

Well this thread really exploded over the weekend. Left it on Friday at ~ Page 22. Now Page 53.

Anything worth reading?

Just the usual anti-science tin foil hat wearers linking propaganda articles, long since debunked.

And sensible, logical people calling them out on it mate.

You didn't answer the question?
So you would gladly take a Trump vaccine and be ok with people losing their jobs if they don't take a Trump vaccine?
Ok got it.

Why shouldn't the government be liable?
You mean bleach?

If you've got a burning bucket-list desire to read endless antivax drive-by posts of articles and 'studies' that don't actually say what antivaxxers claim they say, you'll be in heaven.

Otherwise, maybe not so much.

It’s like Bold and the Beautiful, you only have to be on for thirty seconds to pick up a year’s worth of plot.

We used to call this "soapy stasis"... maybe that's where we're heading here? All we need is dramatic music and multiple shots of each poster staring pensively in a random direction (but don't look at the camera!)

Tell us what you think the ”midpoint” is. Which industries?

Will it involve industries like the AFL? Or is this direction on them just temporary…

Seeing as my name was called I'll throw in my 2c. In my view, it may end up that the vaccine and booster remains in place for healthcare related fields only (those staff involved in direct patient contact), and not necessarily forever. I don't see it hanging around for the others, including my own field in education.

I think we will eventually work out an effective treatment regime that will significantly reduce the impact on the vast majority of those that get unwell from an infection. When this happens, vaccination will be totally up to the person (including those in healthcare), much like the flu vaccine.

The flu booster has never been mandatory for anyone.
Yes it has...aged care is one example where the flu vaccines is mandatory....
"The provision of influenza vaccination programs to all staff in residential aged care homes will be compulsory"....
2018....

I remember the outrage and protests to this 2018 news quite well...

There was none.

Because there is no limiting principle to any of these directions or mandates, I am going to have to pull out my crystal ball and speculate on what the end game of all this is.

The way I see it, all of this can only go one of two ways:

1. The pandemic ends and/or the clear and present threat disappears, and therefore vaccination status becomes irrelevant.

2. It does not end, the threat continues, and therefore booster shots are mandated the same way these first shots have been.

Is there another way this can go? Anything I’ve missed here? It is early in the morning…
3. Everyone that has been vaccinated dies cos apparently thats now programmed into their DNA. then the unvaccinated create a new utopia... :)
Probably the most realistic scenario will be that it becomes endemic and a herd immunity of sorts will happen, simply because a vast majority will likely contract it (both vaccinated and unvaccinated).
The worst case scenario would be a new variant that is able to bypass both naturally acquired and vaccination immune responses. We then would be having a new argument about the safety of the new vaccines....

Mate I was double vaccinated in September. 6 weeks later I was in hospital with covid. I couldn't breathe on my own, I developed pneumonia, still suffering with side effects to this very day. I was told my the doctors that I could potentially die from my condition.

I am in my 20s, zero underlying health conditions. Tell me how good this vaccine is?

Before you say imagine I wasn't double jabbed, I have heard it all before.

you are not dead.

That is what the vaccine is for.

A lot of aged care workers are claiming they’ve never been mandated to take a vaccine.

Was this only public facilities perhaps? Or maybe wasn’t policed as heavily..

Could it be possible that they just go and get a yearly flu vaccine without realising they're actually mandated to do it?

EDIT - I'm not exactly sure how they do it in the industry, but if they have a day where they provide an on site flu vaccination opportunity for their staff, these particular staff may not recognise this as part of their employment requirement but just as a convenience provided by their employer.

Highley likely he won't be able to play at any level due to his stance

Up in the NT where he has strong family ties are considering to only allow those who are fully vaccinated play

Not too sure if the Tasmanian League follow suit or have already stated they would.

Pretty much what Professor Nancy Baxter from University of Melbourne was saying on the TV this morning. Better treatments are on their way and better treatments will be developed. But at this point in time, vaccination is key to managing COVID.
