It is always hard to know which players are not massively rated and are late picks.
Players named first are least likely to be around but I love.

1. Jacob Kennerley - Great midfielder with a huge tank and looks to have good leadership skills. Works hard on the wings.

2. Tom Sparrow - Impact player that looks solid, high speed and crashes packs. Does drift in and out of games.

3. Lachlan Scholl - Talented player that if it all clicked could make it, maybe should be last on this list in reality

4. Toby Bedford - Dangerous small forward

5. Tom McKenzie - Silky smooth mid sized defender with good footskills, I think he could move into the midfield.

Like the list LM, a couple of others that might be around late

Daly Andrews, Luke Moore, Alastair Richards

Thanks, some more to go have a look at. What drew you to these lads Arr0w ?

As with all kids/players, they have flaws, but you are looking for points of difference with late picks

Like LM, Sparrow is of real appeal, tough inside mid that wins his fair share of clearances, has burst speed. His disposal at times will let him down, but certainly a lot to work with. Think he might be gone, by our picks

Kennerley is an accumulator, that found the transition to senior footy well. Will be a Harry Morrison type (Hawks). Also think he will go earlier

Andrews, athletic, runs all day, quick, wingman

Moore, really underrated, small forward, that has safe, quick hands, amazing footy IQ, but lacks a yard

Richards, similar attributes as his brother, at the Dogs

North Melbourne: 42, 47, 48, 49, 55, 58 - to be used on Thomas and Scott.
Sydney: 26, 33, 38, 39, 40 - to be used on Blakey.
Collingwood: 41, 44, 51, 57 - to be used on Quaynor & Kelly.
Bulldogs: 27, 32, 45 - to be used on West.

I've got a draft points calculator spreadsheet on a USB at home, might nut out some likely scenarios based on probably bids.

Good chance that 4 of North's picks drop below ours, 3 of Sydney's, 2 of Collingwood's, and 1 of WB's.

Could see our late picks shuffle up 10 spots.

Didn't the AFL bring in some rule about having a list spot for all your picks to combat clubs trading for picks they have no intention of losing? Or am i getting mixed up with a different scenario?

Im really hoping the clubs appointment of Agresta will bring in a new age of Carlton using the PSD and Rookie drafts as a chance to draft overlooked kids and project players over C-D grade role players who are gone after 1-2 seasons on the list.

Im aware of finding a balance and am happy to add some midfield grunt to support Cripps to someone like Grigg (if SOS rates him better than Graham) but mostly i want kids. In 4 years i want to look back and see 3-4 players from our rookie list in our best 22. If Sydney can do it, so can we.

On a seperate note, what was the rule the AFL brought in regarding stockpiling of picks that you have no intention of using and how does it apply in relation to North having 6 picks in the 40s and 50s?

Excellent - thanks for that :thumbsu:

You’re right. If North want to use the points from those 6 high picks, they’ll have to clear 6 list spots. Although without knowing the intricacies of their list numbers, they could go to the draft with 34 senior listed players and 6 picks, use those points but only draft 4 players, and go for a 38/6 split.

That said, pick trading hasn’t finished yet, so if they wanted to have less vacant list spots, they might be able to trade multiple pics for a pick with similar points value before draft night. This is unlikely though.

What I haven’t seen defined yet though, is what happens in live trading. What happens if a team trades down on draft night for multiple pics, or trades a future pick to get another in the current draft? Do they automatically lose the points of their last pick?

Hypothetically, say we get a DFA, so we go to the draft with 1, 69, 71 (is 3 list spots) and we nominate Ben for F/S. Then we trade 1 with the Suns for 2 picks, and use them. We now only have 1 list spot left. Do we still have the points from #71 for Ben, or are they wiped?

What can you tell me about Ely Smith?

Looking at the combine results, he featured prominently -

Kicking - 24/30 (4th)
Standing vertical jump - 77cm (1st)
Running vertical jump (right) - 82cm (3rd)
Running vertical jump (left) - 86cm (5th)
Agility - 8.328 seconds (9th)
Yo-Yo test - 21.4 (equal 7th)

Combine result don't mean a whole lot, but do like that he has done well across a number of disciplines. Not dissimilar to Willo who had a very strong combine a few years back.

Is he someone worth looking at for a late pick?

Struggle to be a fan. Manchild already, wins a fair bit of it, in tight, but very one sided and his efficiency isn't great, even for a bull mid. Initially I had him peg as a very late pick, but now I would say a early to mid 3rd rounder. If he slide you may consider him, but a no from me

What's your thoughts on Xavier OHalloran - similar to Smith in the sense that he tested well accross a range of disciplines. Must have some leadership qualities too if he was captain of his side?

Rate him as a late 1st, early second. Extremely professional and suggestions he will be a great leader.

It is unfortunate that we no longer have those 2 x 2nd rounders

I rate the little ive seen of him, so that's why I was keen to hear some perspectives, particularly after testing well - top tens in yoyo, 20m sprint, 2km time trial, kicking test and 2nd in agility behind Rankine - I think he'll be the best later selection when you combine these attributes with leadership and professionalism.

Difficult for us novices, we judge players purely what they can and can't do on field, yet there is so much more.

Another kid I like, that I believe will have a great impact on and off the field is McHenry

I'm a fan of O'Halloran. I've had him in the 12-15 range for the last 4 months. That is higher than most, but i think he has the AFL tools both in his game, his athletic capabilities and what's upstairs. I'd have him over Hately.

Ok, i was bored watching the Aussies collapse faster than Alex Rance in a contest, so had a crack at my early Top 25 Phantom. May as well keep current order until it's not:

1. Carlton: Sam Walsh
2. GC: Jack Lukosius
3. GC: Connor Rozee
4. StK: Max King
5. Port: Izak Rankine (and we visualise Crowie fans throwing their West End's at their Pye TV's)
6. Syd: Nick Blakey
7. GC: Bailey Smith
8. WB: Ben King
9. NM: Tarryn Thomas (Hamish Ogilvie from Crows loves his fellow Tassie)
10. Adel : Riley Collier-Dawkins
11. GWS: Jordan Clark (bit early for mine but looks a good fit in a few ways.
12. PA: Jackson Hately
13. GWS: Chayce Jones
14. Geel: Jye Caldwell
15. Adel: Bailey Williams
16. Freo: Ian Hill
17. Port: Jez McLennan
18. Adel: Luke Valente
19. Coll: Isaac Quaynor (Rich might want a Houli/Short replacement soon)
20. Rich: Xavier O'Halloran
21. Bris: Liam Stocker
22. Bris: Conor McFadyen (see GWS liking his upside)
23. GWS: Sam Sturt
24. WC: Curtis Taylor
25. Adel: Riley Grundy

Top 8 could be pretty close to the mark.

If Rankine is available at 4, I'd be interested to see if the Saints select him and negotiate pick 5 + something else from the Power or whether they just go straight for Max King who they have been linked to.

Yeah, plenty to play out yet. Could be a fair few changes to come, or there could be hardly any. Everyone will be wary of looking foolish if they get their moves wrong. Will be interesting to see just how many are prepared to lead the pack and pull the trigger. Lotta sheep in this biz.
