Is anyone else worried about the number of high draft picks we are stockpiling and the effect it will have on our salary cap in a few years time ala GWS.
As good as it is to have an abundance of talent all about the same age, we have seen the effect it has had on GWS when it comes to retention, while we don't have quite the number they had we still have a lot of first round picks who will all be looking for substantial pay increases in a few years time.

Even Gold Coast have had the same issue once there players move into there 2nd and 3rd contracts, how we manage this will be interesting to watch which is probably why we have the 3 key personnel dealing with this area.

Talent aquisition and drafting to Brodie. Trading, contracts TPP Agresta and of course Silvagni overseeing both departments as a whole to ensure some sort of parity and oversight.

This system with luck will help us to avoid the pitfalls the other two clubs have fallen into by having a better overall picture of where we are at and where we are heading and what we can and can't afford as far as the TPP goes.

I guess all we can do is hope they know what they are doing which I think after all the shit that SOS went through with the brown paper bags under the table fiasco he will be keeping a very close eye on our salary cap issues now and into the future.
Hence I think tpp may have a bearing on whether we trade pick 1 for 3 & 6 as that adds an extra first round pick to squeeze into our TPP which may be fine now but what about 4-5 years down the line when there contracts are up for renewal for the third time.

Sam loyd will pick walsh that's the type of player he likes, he sounds like a better version of barlow.
It should also be noted hes a very good drafter we got him in 2008 he built freo's 2013 GF side. The side freo are currently building will grow to be a better side than 2012-2015.
Your drafting will be fine.

Didn't realise a Tigger reject now playing for the Dogs is moonlighting as our List Manager........

Will need to be managed well and if we are a successful side it should have a deflationary effect on TPP rather than inflationary like GWS and GCS.
Doubt it would have any impact on the decision of whether or not to trade pick 1 for 2 picks or more.

Quality players often take a paycut if their side is playing and winning finals and in real flag contention. Shiel just recently took less than whats on offer elsewhere to go to a club he rated as finals capable. And they havent even won a final in 14 years!

We may lose a couple along the way and a couple may prove to be busts. What you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts. Our cap will be fine so long as we get to September sooner rather than later.

I think in the current environment it will be extremely important to know what players are worth what, from a salary point of view. SOS seems to be quite meticulous in the way things are managed and a tight arse (which will be necessary going forward).

If we do things right, we will lose some players along the way. Trading certain players where we have excess depth as well as those whose salary demands are higher than their worth. As we saw this year, more and more players will be traded out prior to their FA year to maximise return for the club (Shiel, May, Neale, Wingard all traded a year prior to becoming free agents).

If we do things right we will constantly be able to add good talent through the draft from the picks we receive from traded players.

Port trading 5 & 15 for 2 makes no sense for them.

They have 5, 10 and 15 in a strong draft. Converting that to 2 & 10 is a losing strategy, and I suggest this is little chance of that unless Kochie becomes the list manager.

Pick 15 could end up being the best player in the draft (not likely, but not impossible either).

I strongly believe Port want Rankine as a replacement for Wingard. They may need to move up to secure him.

Moving up in this draft is going to cost more than what most people think it's worth. Refer to the pick swap between Fremantle and Port during the trade period.

Small forwards with the talent of Rankine are extremely rare. This is probably the first time a draft has presented itself with such a player since Wingard was drafted in 2011. They have the draft hand to secure Rankine this year. Next time an opportunity presents, they may not have the currency to draft the player.

Note: Yes, there have been good small forwards in more recent drafts, but none talked about in the same class as Rankine.

Keep note that a later pick swap could even out the equation for Port.

The other thing is that Port may prefer to draft 2 players of their choice (first preference) rather than just selecting 3 best available players that may or may not suit their list needs.

A bit like us, there will be players in the top echelon that they will not have an interest in drafting because they'll be a surplus to their list.

No, it is a good problem to hope to get to of fitting enough talent under salary cap. I want the best list in league in 3 or 4 years time and premiership 17 done and 18 ready to grab and the challenge of fitting a list way better than any other club under salary cap is a time I look forward to.

Correct. Salary cap pressure is generally prevalent when you have surplus players earning decent coin. This is what happened at GWS.

If the talent we've drafted ends up being high quality, all it means is that you take your hat out of the ring for big fish.

Betts being Rankine's mentor, would that help us to retain him if he was drafted given Eddies love for Carlton or hinder because of his playing for Adelaide now? Interesting to know what Eddie would say to him about Carlton. Any thoughts?

We should be in his ear for more money. I doubt he’s getting what he deserves at Melbourne. He’d be a handy addition in say 2020 and I doubt Melbourne could match.
He’s a jet - I agree - but some players are loyal and I think although Melbourne wouldn’t match it, he just looks like a Melbourne player through and through.

The Carlton Betts knew is some distance away from the one showing up now, other than for Eddies sage advice; Everyone looks better in Navy :)

There just doesn't seem to as much life about this years draft as it has in more recent years.
Maybe because many feel Carltons first pick is a formality and then the GC have 3 of the next 5 picks.

Only 4 more days for any picks to change hands and then a somewhat lull until the bid day/night.

Certainly , less interest for us. We got pick 1 and given we 95% sure of whom we taking there is no real sense of mystery for us and draft virtually over for us at that point as we will not pick again until way later in draft, the following day. But the talent in top 7 pick of draft is enormous. The height of it will be pick 4 when it arrives at Saints and last real chance for Crows to try to get ahead of Port by offering something to Saints to make them want to give up pick 4.

so after 4 more days, we are stuck with pick 1, so to speak?
What's the problem with that?
Wouldnt it be great to have some live trading panic by other clubs?

I think Eddie at end of his career will still have more of a soft spot for us but Crows closer to most of his family and relatives is easier base to play from. Kind of irrelevant to us though as we are not getting Rankine unless we by some miracle offer end up with two picks in top six of the draft.
