Special assistance package for the Dons. They needed an "injection" of talent after missing out on Setterfield. So after one of the worst years by any team in living memory, the AFL's big helping hand was we could sign 2 mature age players for free on our main list or trade to other teams' main lists.
And then fast forward a month and ANY team can recruit mature age players carte blanche on their rookie lists?
What the actual F?

I was really surprised at the time as to how little compensation we received for the state league trades, considering some of the gems picked up in recent years and what they have shown and their potential current value (Kelly 1st round pick if WCE had one, L.Ryan and W.Rioli must surely be worth close to late 1st round/early second) but we got virtually a half eaten kebab in return... surely some other clubs were not privy to this rule change before it happened?True.
But if the AFL would have announced this earlier it would have made our assistance literally worth less than nothing (using it would have been a hindrance to other clubs).
Wouldn't be surprised if other clubs knew about this being on the way too. Explains why there was so little traction/benefit from our mature ager trades.

It means anyone can get him now... Hiw well did he get along with Bolts?? Maybe Mathieson can just fly him from Tiwi to all of our games on his private jet.. or just lend him the freaking jet for the next 3 years on the condition he rocks up to every game!So whats the washup if Rioli decides to make a comeback ?
Hawthorn can just take him without him having to go through any draft ?
It's the usual helping hand we get from the afl it's just the hand leaves a big red mark on our face from the force of the "helping hand"So after one of the worst years by any team in living memory, the AFL's big helping hand was we could sign 2 mature age players for free on our main list or trade to other teams' main lists.

It will just make it even sweeter

No, Rioli needs to be out of the game, for at least a year for Hawthorn to redraft him as a rookie

True. I'm not sure I ever really wanted help from the AFL.
But since they did help us, I'm annoyed at how useless it was!
Am I crazy?
Or is the AFL?

Any other team can sign him up this year though.
Hypothetically, let's say a team in need of more senior experience, desperate for a small forward and with a coach and high performance manager that knows Cryil inside out....Hypothetically
You know my thoughts on it Ferris, while a PP would have been handy, when we win 17, it will be pure, void of any assistance
So if at the end of 2019 Rioli decides he wants to play again , he can just walk to any club of his choice without having to go through any draft ?
Oh yeah, the Cows will be mooing....hope their posters have heard the same news...anyone prepared to throw the hand grenade and post the link on one of their boards.....massive meltdownsWell, the McGovern and Setterfield deals, just got better
Crows and Cats, could have taken those players as Cat A, rather than give up picks, or having them as part of the deal

Anyway...SOS, get on the phone and start negotiating with the mature agers we want who fit into these new rules, and encourage them not to enter the draft
Brilliant!!! Let us know what you come up with Arr0wMaybe it is another reason, not to trade pick 1 unless we get overs.
Need to do some research, 19+ players that were overlooked
Correct
I believe he can this year as well, as a DFA, on a main list.
If he nominates for the ND and is overlooked, he can be added as a DFA on the rookie list
Brilliant!!! Let us know what you come up with Arr0w![]()
