So after one of the worst years by any team in living memory, the AFL's big helping hand was we could sign 2 mature age players for free on our main list or trade to other teams' main lists.

And then fast forward a month and ANY team can recruit mature age players carte blanche on their rookie lists?

What the actual F?
Special assistance package for the Dons. They needed an "injection" of talent after missing out on Setterfield.

We come out looking alright having converted those picks into draft assets. Probably the ones with some gripe are Ade, Gee, GCS

True.

But if the AFL would have announced this earlier it would have made our assistance literally worth less than nothing (using it would have been a hindrance to other clubs).

Wouldn't be surprised if other clubs knew about this being on the way too. Explains why there was so little traction/benefit from our mature ager trades.
I was really surprised at the time as to how little compensation we received for the state league trades, considering some of the gems picked up in recent years and what they have shown and their potential current value (Kelly 1st round pick if WCE had one, L.Ryan and W.Rioli must surely be worth close to late 1st round/early second) but we got virtually a half eaten kebab in return... surely some other clubs were not privy to this rule change before it happened?

It's not unreasonable to assume they were aware.

We're 24 hours away from closing the 2nd DFA window.

It would be absurd for the AFL to drop this on the clubs now. Any club that has signed a DFA onto their main list heretofore would be seething.

There have been very few DFA signings this year. Lots of talk of recycling players in the rookie draft...

Put 2 + 2 together and you get.... the AFL's IQ

So whats the washup if Rioli decides to make a comeback ?
Hawthorn can just take him without him having to go through any draft ?
It means anyone can get him now... Hiw well did he get along with Bolts?? Maybe Mathieson can just fly him from Tiwi to all of our games on his private jet.. or just lend him the freaking jet for the next 3 years on the condition he rocks up to every game!

It's the usual helping hand we get from the afl it's just the hand leaves a big red mark on our face from the force of the "helping hand"

True. I'm not sure I ever really wanted help from the AFL.

But since they did help us, I'm annoyed at how useless it was!

Am I crazy?

Or is the AFL?

*Conspiracy theory time it’s so they can give GCS priorities next year. They never actually scrapped them

No, Rioli needs to be out of the game, for at least a year for Hawthorn to redraft him as a rookie

Any other team can sign him up this year though.

Hypothetically, let's say a team in need of more senior experience, desperate for a small forward and with a coach and high performance manager that knows Cryil inside out....Hypothetically

You know my thoughts on it Ferris, while a PP would have been handy, when we win 17, it will be pure, void of any assistance

So if at the end of 2019 Rioli decides he wants to play again , he can just walk to any club of his choice without having to go through any draft ?

Correct

I believe he can this year as well, as a DFA, on a main list.

If he nominates for the ND and is overlooked, he can be added as a DFA on the rookie list

Well, the McGovern and Setterfield deals, just got better

Crows and Cats, could have taken those players as Cat A, rather than give up picks, or having them as part of the deal
Oh yeah, the Cows will be mooing....hope their posters have heard the same news...anyone prepared to throw the hand grenade and post the link on one of their boards.....massive meltdowns :D

Anyway...SOS, get on the phone and start negotiating with the mature agers we want who fit into these new rules, and encourage them not to enter the draft

Maybe it is another reason, not to trade pick 1 unless we get overs.

Need to do some research, 19+ players that were overlooked

Not sure of the if's , what's and maybe's but if it were at all possible , we'd put Bolton , Russell and Bruce to work on it to find out wouldnt we ...

So Brisbane get a priority pick 2 years ago of pick 19 the afl then also helps them out by letting Hodge retire and "surprise" come out of retirement so that he is no longer a free agent which would have cost Brisbane there compo for losing Rockliff to free agency which once again was surprise pick 19. So Brisbane gets 2 x pick 19s in 2 drafts and we get 2 state league hacks in a year where there are no descent state league players all while having a worse record than Brisbane over a comparable period. Equalisation Gill McLachlan style. Oh and what did we get as compensation for losing the best small forward in the history of the game to free agency, that's right NOTHING and a cripple. And again Waite nothing. Thank God we didn't lose Kreuser to free agency cause I know what we would have gotten back, you guessed it NOTHING. It's called free agency because all of Carltons good players are free.
