so, what do we make of it?

Is it completely meaningless because it's preseason? Will the Blues turn on the tap and do their usual number on Richmond? Does it matter that they've got no winning form going into Round One, or will they click and win the expected 15-18 games?

Or is it a concern for the Carlton brains-trust? A pretty strong team this week was beaten pretty easily this week, on top of last weeks scoreless last half.

Are they the lock for top 4 as everyone has assumed? I'd be really interested in Carlton's supporters opinions on this one. We all know the Carlton of old never bothered with preseason's, but is that a quality inherent in Carlton despite being a different era?

If they win in Round 1 everyone will forget they were winless in the preseason.

no doubt about that. But will they win Round 1?

Preseason form isn't a great way to assess teams, no doubt. But winning form is winning form. Surely you'd like a win going into Round 1?

But, as you say, if they do win Round 1, no-one will remember preseason one iota.

Sydney won the flag with no wins in the pre-season, Carlton won the pre-season and got a spoon. Make all the judgements you want after some regular season games to see if its relevant.

Problem with that is Carlton isn't Sydney.

To have such a bad preparation leading into the real season must be a worry, have shown no good form at all, and for all the talk about wanting no injuries coming from the supporters, it seems Carlton has come out of the NAB with the longest injury list out of all the clubs.

Carlton aren't at the stage where they can simply flick a switch and it all comes together, very worrying signs for Carlton.

The Carlton sides of old that lost all pre season were seasoned campaigners often coming off a flag year. This side is much different. The pre-season is for practice so results don't matter that much and won't matter at all once the real stuff starts, but we are a side that has won one final in a decade. We are not coming from a position of strength. There will be other sides that jump up and we need to start beating or being competitive with the HAwks, Woods and Cats to be real contenders. Really no-one knows until the season starts and not winning practice matches is not a huge concern depending on what you are aiming to achieve thru the practice, but to win none is not ideal. Lets wait and see but I think a fired up Tigers will give us a fair contest without Walker, Jamieson, Duigan, Laidler and Warnock. Let's wait and see. As usual Juddy's output will be the difference between winning and losing. Murphy has stepped up, Gibbs needs to star this year and hopefully Big K has a good injury free season. We are probably a bit further behind the top three than we are ahead of the next 3 or 4 so it will be an interesting season. We've talked up big and it is time to stop taking baby steps. Prelim final at least or the season's a failure and the vultures will be circling. The main thing is 'no more excuses' - let's not hear the coach providing a litany of excuses if we lose. If you win you don't need excuses.

PS Didn't see the game today but Petrie's 7 doesn't bode well especially with Jamieson under yet another injury cloud

I think the Blues are a touch under-prepared, at least a couple of players are: Judd, Waite, Walker, and Jamison in particular. With that in mind I wouldn't expect the Blues to peak in March. It's gonna make next Thursday night very interesting...

As the months roll on though, the Blues will steady and should be playing good footy. Might even be a touch more energised than a couple of sides due to a lean pre-season.

I think they have some under done players, which does not bode well.

Same thing happened to North last year (probably even worse run with injuries) and it took until half way through the year to get going.

Wont be top 4 this year IMO. Should be a decent team again though.

Last time they won the NAB Cup they finished the regular season last, so naturally not winning a game in the NAB Cup means they'll win the flag in the real stuff.

Those injuries occurred prior to the NAB Cup, except for Laidler. The Blues are underdone, but the NAB Cup wasn't responsible for the injuries.

i'm amused that some supporters can just pencil in a win against richmond. not that we won't, but there is absolutely nothing to base it on. one of these years there will be a few rude shocks.
this much stronger side against north was meant to be our proper hit out apparently, which we have then duly lost. i'm not sure who was subbed off/on and when and only had a chance to follow the last quarter.
i think too it might be easy for supporters now to fall into the habit of thinking 'winning pre-season games means nothing, so it's kind of good if we suck'. ratten himself though, has expressed other ideas including disappointment in the brisbane performance which we largely waved off.
i could probably talk about injuries, but the side you put out still has to be good enough.

for myself, i am mildly concerned but will wait until after round 1 to commit suicide.

Its hard to know what to take out of it. I remember Port in 2003 not winning a game in the pre season and also losing the first 2 matches of the season as well. Then they won 18 out of 20 games and finished the year 3 games clear on top of the ladder. So who knows.

I think Carlton needed some winning form/culture heading into round 1.
It seems the Tigers are playing decent footy so an upset next week wouldn't suprise me.
Carlton will play finals but aren't a lock for top 4.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Carlton was right up there with the Forward Press last year, and reaped the rewards of being able to adapt the a proven game plan.

This year, we are seeing that more of the competition are tactically and physically prepared to go down the same road. Richmond themselves have clearly done a lot of work on it. No doubt Carlton have some genuine stars, but without a huge amount of depth to back it up. The Blues will have to work harder to impose themselves this year... the main thing they have going for them, is that there is a long way to go yet

This is not true carltons injury list looks like this :

Walker
Duigan
Laidler
Jamison
Warnock
Ellard

White
Bell
O'Keeffe
Buckley
McInnes
Mitchell

Reds are the ones that are best 22 blues clearly not , out of those reds from all reports laidler, duigan, jamison and ellard could all be back by round 2 -3 which fixes the back line problem. i expect to win round 1 and 2 without these players , we may be beaten in round 3 if some of the boys have not returned but once we have them back touch wood no one else gets injured we will be fine , Carlton has not had there best 22 on the park for over 2 years , and i think the goal for the club is to have the 22 playing finals. They have been taking a cautious approach to injuries this year after having rushed a few players back in recent history with bad results form wise and re-occurring injuries.

Results mean nothing. Biggest worry for them though is Jamison's injury. Leaves them seriously exposed up back just left with Henderson and Thorton. Looks like Petrie ran riot today. Riewoldt is going to do the same and he looks set for a massive year after recovering from his injuries.
