Why aren't O'Brien, Merrett and Dell'Olio named on the Ess injured list then..... it gets so frustrating when we don't know how long some of our guys are going to be out.

Hope Hooker plays and gets some match fitness for the game against the Blues. Casey will have a stack of Melb guys in the lineup including Brad Green so it may be a tough day at the office for the young Gold side....

copy + paste from saladin over on bblitz

Lee is racking up the touches. really good inside work, like him around the stoppages, has also kicked a goal.

Davis is tagging Green and flogging him. really really promising player, uses the ball well, got forward for a goal, good footy brain.

Steinberg contesting but not snagging them, seems to be competing 1 against three too often.

hooker been solid. will only play 3 quarters apparently.

henry as usual playing defence and putting himself in harms way.

bags has been solid, but not overly prominent.

the defence have not had to work too hard other than the last part of the 1st term.

Lee, Duscher, williams, davis etc controlling the midfield

maddern and little cashing in up forward. Putt playing well in the ruck, as is Crow is the 2nd ruck role.

more of saladin's work copied + paste d

big win in the end. 137 to 66. and done with almost no bench in the last term, as all of Hooker, Davis and Lee were rested.

Lee probably gave 40 possessions a nudge in the first three terms. really got his game going and just kept finding the ball, whether it be in congestion or on the spread. clear BOG for mine, and the best game i have seen from him (admittedly not a huge number, lol). not overly quick, not the most penetrating kick, but a genuine magnet today. finished with an icepack on the ankle/achilles but suspect it was purely precautionary. a tough player, good leadership and looking through the lens it was notable how often he was the one doing the hard yards like tackling as well. His WAFL reputation converted to VFL today in a big way.

Davis absolutely smacked Green, no mistake. Green was awarded a mark during the third that he clearly dropped and kicked a goal, but other than that did zero. Davis was filthy on the ump too laugh.gif , a naturally competitive and driven young kid is Luke. benched in the last term after a conversation with hirdy at 3/4, and it was noticeable that Green suddenly got more touches in the early last term than davis had allowed him all game. tagging roles are hard to evaluate, but i suspect you'll see him in the official bests and it will be deserved. growing as a player almost every week since he arrived last year. Going early, but predicting a garry o'donnell style VFL apprenticeship and then an unsung member of the senior side for years to come

Steinberg came to life in the last when most of Bendigo were stagnant. a couple of really good grabs, and a goal to add to one earlier in the game. he must keep presenting at the ball rather than trying for pack marks every time, but then we also need to structure up differently to allow him to do that. his last term saved his day, but competing against three players in the air all the time should not be his go. would love to see him play closer to goal and lead at the ball, but that is clearly not the designated role at the moment.

Hooker got through fine, did a couple of nice things, spoils marks etc but the backline had a good ride all day. rested in the last as part of a predetermined plan.

henry was good, actually very good in the second half, played as a clearance player a bit. did what he always does, competes and is willing to get hurt. used the ball fairly efficiently.

Bags i didn't notice a whole lot. one piece of play in the last was very good, attacked the ball hard all day, made some spoils, probably got more of it than i noticed. finished the game well i thought.

The last quarter looked like it was going to stagnate badly as Bendigo ran out of gas with minimal rotations. That the likes of Williams, Freezer, Duscher, Little, Ladson etc sparked up late under duress was great to see and converted what could have been a solid 30 point win into a thumping. Duscher was very good again, clearances and run are his forte. very versatile. Freezer also caught the eye, had an excellent game down back and kicked a long goal late in the game.

Considering the limited essendon input in terms of player numbers, this was a very good win. none of the Bombers disappointed - solid at worst- , and bendigo's listed players got the job done emphatically as well. a good day all things considered.

Can we call knocking off Casey a 'big scalp'? they are a rabble. They have lost there captain, multiple State players, there leading goal kicker and another very prominent midfielder.

werent many Essendon listed guys out there today, only Lee, Baguley, Steinberg, Slattery, Hooker, Davis.

Lee was clearly BOG, by the length of the Flemington straight. I love how he simply hunts the footy, keeps his feet well and knew were his team mates were. Kicking not a standout like a Dempsey or Fletcher, but is competent enough and gets the job done. Managed to bob up for a goal early in the first quarter but didnt seem to back himself passing off a couple of other times when he possibly should have had a shot. Managed to get most of his ball inside, but did manage to see him link up a few times on the grandstand side wing. Can definitely see him playing soon (hopefully)..

Baguley was ok, not overly prominent as he was the last time I saw him (in round 1 against Frankston) but did what was required when the ball was in his area. Used it well and did the little things, chased, tackled, spoilt well.

Ariel Steinberg was ok, didnt do a great deal early, but it was difficult against 3 Casey opponents. Managed to finish the game with 2, but could have quite easily finished with 4+. Would like to see him demand the ball more whilst I have noticed that his positioning is usually off, seeing him fly early, or having to jump 4 deep. Still a little while off, but he is progressing well.

Slattery was a sight for sore eyes at one stage, stagnant with ball in hand and indecisive. Was moved on ball in the second half and got his hands on a few centre clearances, but it wont surprise me to see his orders stamped.

Cale Hooker was ok, was told early he was being put in cotton wool by quarter time. Was blowing up hard when he was coming off, but when on the ground was very good. Spoilt well and showed his class.

Luke Davis was enormous for us, played a hard tag on Brad Green and gave him an absolute bath. Didnt get a heap of it himself but he simply cut out Green.. Managed to get forward and kick a goal himself to showcase his neat skills. Seems a very disciplined player and one who is tracking along very nicely.

And for the Bendigo guys, special mentions go out to my boy Josh Freezer, he is fast becoming my favourite player at Bendigo. Was huge across half back, took several strong marks and used the ball extremely well. Looks a lot more composed at this level this year compared to last year. Snuck forward to kick a long goal after a silly 50m penalty. Would have been in my best players today.

Dean Putt, yes, the former Richmond big man, he was huge today. Not overly strong competition today but he simply imposed himself on the game. Strong tapwork, provided a prescence around the ground and took several, strong contested marks. Moved forward in the last and again provided a strong target and kicked a couple of goals. Word has it that he IS on our radar which goes a long way to explaining why Simon MAddern was at the game today and working with Putty.

Ben Duscher was again huge and is too good for this level. Seemed to blow up late in the game, but that was always going to happen on the back of a limited pre season. Was huge with Putt in the centre square and really took control of the game when it needed a spark.

And a couple of honourable mentions. Jacob Thompson got better as the game wore on and provided a strong body in the forward half.
Matt Little finished with 4 opportunistic goals.
Wayne Schultz, the 30 year old Bendigo Football LEague superstar was very, very good all day today, moved well and used the ball well. Kicked a couple of opportunisitc goals also.
And the young 'fill in' ruck man, 'Crowey'.. First senior VFL game because we "needed height" and really, proveded a contest in the first half but got alot better as the game wore on.. Kicking is a little awkward, but he was actually fairly handy and competed well.

Overall, a very good performance considering how many Essendon players we didnt have. Casey are a good side, make no mistake, we just outplayed them with our class at the top..

Good start to the season, with another big percentage booster after today should see us sitting comfortably inside the top 4.

Magnificent conditions greeted the fans and players at Casey Fields for the VFL match between the undefeated Casey Scorpions and Bendigo Gold.

Brad Green would headline the Scorpions line-up, after being dropped by Melbourne last weekend, whilst Bendigo would be affected by the injury curse afflicting Essendon.

Bendigo co-captain Trent Shinners would win the toss and have Bendigo kick to the Berwick end and into a slight 1 goal breeze.

1st Quarter:

Bendigo would get the early jump with Brendan Lee scoring the first goal and Matthew Little putting the next 2 goals thorugh. With Dean Putt controlling the hitouts, and the midfield of Ben Duscher, Henry Slattery, Rick Ladson and Steven Stroobants winning centre clearances, it was a dominant Bendigo for the first 15 minutes.

Luke Davis was assigned what would be the vital tagging job on Brad Green. But, Casey came back late in the term. Slattery was robbed of a goal at 1/4 time after an over-rule by the field umpire on the decision of the goal umpire.

Bendigo 4.5.29 - Casey 4.3.27. Goals - 2 Little, Lee 1 and Maddern 1. Best - Putt, Davis, Duscher, Little.

2nd Quarter:

Kicking with the wind, Bendigo would be rampant in the second term. Ariel Steinberg, Justin Maddern and Little would prove to be a 3 prong attack, with the likes of Stroobants, Wayne Schultz, Duscher and Davis getting impressive goals. Whilst down back, Cale Hooker would together with Shinners and Mark Baguley to hold Casey goal-less in the quarter, whilst Bendigo would manage 7.4 to 0.3.

Bendigo 11.9.75 - Casey 4.6.30. Goals - Little 3, Maddern 2, Ladson, Duscher, Davis, Crow
and Schultz 1. Best - Putt, Davis, Little, Freezer, Slattery and Ladson.

3rd Quarter:

The game slowed in the 3rd term as it became a battle of the respective half-back lines. Little to really right home about, except for the early spelling of hooker, perhaps either readying him for next week or as a pure player management strategy.

Bendigo 13.14.92 - Casey 6.10.46. Goals - just the 2 - 1 each to Steinberg and Schultz. Putt the standout once again, assisted by Duscher, Slattery, Ladson and James Martin.

Final Quarter:

Bendigo once again used the breeze to it's advantage, slamming on 7.3 to Casey's 3.2. Pure dominace in a 10 minute purple patch when 4 goals were kicked with little to no pressure coming the other way. Davis eventually tired and Green was moved late to kick 2 goals, but, that was it.

Bendigo 20.17.137 - Casey 9.12.66.

Goalkickers: Little 4, Ladson 3, Maddern, Steinberg and Schultz 2, Lee, Martin, Duscher, Freezer, Davis, Crow and Putt 1 each. Jacob Thompson 5 behinds.

Best players: Putt, Duscher, Davis, Slattery, Ladson, Baguley.

Some Key Notes:

Dean Putt: The former Richmond ruckman was a class above all day. Playing on Jake Spencer in the ruck, he smashed the hitouts and then when given a spell in the last quarter, provided a good focal point. Something to ponder in order to improve Essendon's ruck stocks at the end of the season if that form continues.

Essendon Senior Listed Players: Very few involved today, but, don't be at all surprised if Davis debuts this week. Really embarrassed Green in the end. And was very effective going the other way. Slattery's effort was very good all day and played like a leader throughout. Steinberg really only came into it late.

Is Steinberg leading towards the ball carrier ?

Has his agility improved ?

I didn't see him on the weekend but got a good look at hime a couple of weeks ago.

His agility looked good as did his balance. I can't say i noticed alot of him leading up to the ball carrier. Looks more a genuine forward utility that will need to be work rate driven to crack senior footy.

He just doesnt seem to demand the ball enough in my eyes.. Said to Saladin, I would have moved him up to the wing for 10 minutes and let him try and hunt the ball and get amongst it..

He seems to be trying to play a pack mark type despite his size (and style) not allowing him to. Should be filling the void that Tory Dickson has left at Bendigo, and not the role that Matt Little is playing.

Seems he is playing similarly to 2011.:(

Remember we had this discussion last year that Steinberg should look at how Dickson was playing for Bendigo.

Or he should look at players like S.Johnson, Ryan O'Keefe, etc.
