With all the retirements and half the squad under 21 and front loaded contacts. Do we do a Carlton and target young promising?

Maybe, just a thought, why not target Morton from the dees? This incoming draft will be weak and giving up a first round pick for Morton would be a bargin.

With the extra cash in the cap, we would have the upper hand, just like Carlton did with Warnock.

I dunno. I'm just starting to like the idea of drafting and developing from within.

I know there was alot of money talked about with Warnock but it would have been nothing that freo couldn't have matched. It was more that he wanted to go home & the Judd-factor was a mighty big carrot that Carlton dangled.

Probably once we start developing our young talent and showing that we will be an AFL power you'll get players want to jump on board particularly ex-pats.

Dunno if it's just GC17 or other clubs looking our lack of success but first round draft picks seem to be off the table.

Retention of our own is more important. Draft the kids, no more crazy trades...

Do a Carlton?? You have to be kidding, surely??

That's what I thought as well.....:D

It'd be like an NBA team wanting to 'Do a Clippers' or an EPL team wanting to 'Do a Leeds'.

How about we at least call it 'doing a hawthorn' if we want to fill the list full of youth and front load contracts?

Lol
Exactly...
Carlton have been the worst AFL side this decade by a country mile. They can't even use priority picks correctly. Were kept afloat by the AFL for a number of years. Even Fremantle dug it's own way out of debt. They should learn from us if anything.
Why oh why would you even want to be like them. No thanks. Besides we have dabbled in 'buying' experience and ultimately failed.
Go with deveoplment and front end contracts of the promising players.

The only way I reckon we should "do a carlton" is get someone on the inside at their club into Yarran's ear... convince him he's homesick and he'd be better off in Perth... then convince him he should only play for Freo cos we foster and respect our indigenous players...

Then get him to demand a trade to Freo when his contract is up and offer our 2nd round pick for him.... right at the end of trade week, we can chuck in a "sweetener"... either Scott Thornton or our 5th rounder... take it or leave it....

Or see how Steven Browne and Dennis Armfield go this year - and if either of them develop into something decent over 2009, then get him back to the West and in purple for a 5th round draft pick...

That's what I call "Doing a Carlton".

;)

surely if there is one thing we have learnt from the last 16 years is that we need to develop our own, do it properly and back our recruiters and coaches, unless a deal is clearly in our favour ala warnock deal for carlton then dont bother with trades imo

If we are destined to finish near the bottom next year, I think we should definitely have a crack at some up and coming kids.

The main lesson to take from Warnock is we must play hard ball.

Anyone know if Yarran extended his contract with Carlton?

Would be interesting to see which WA kids have and havent.

One week in and we already have the winner of stupidest thread of the year.

Have some of you blokes learned nothing from our past 14 seasons?

Expectations of top 4 finish's because the media/bookies are saying it?
I have learn't allot....

I don't think anyone is writing the season off, though it is the offseason and the board slows down quite significantly.

doesn't appear to be any of the carlton youngsters with extended contracts.

We need to hit back at Carlton. If we can get into Yarran's ear, talk him up and poach him that would be fanastic.

The best way to pay Carlton back is to beat them and finish higher on the ladder. Not get involved in tit-for-tat trading games.

Writing the season off? I mean poaching homesick WA players. Considering how often the club has done it, it really hasn't proven very successful.

of the players that freo has poached back to wa, i mean homesick players who have really given us great service?

ben allan- heart and soul, but only played 40-odd games
stephen oreily- good player
jeff farmer- good 3-4 years but maybe played his best footy for melbourne, his last two years for us were disappointing
peter bell- in my opinion our best return home player, i think most would agree
des headland- average to disappointing
josh carr- good three years then became a tratorus swine
jason norish- very good service
brad wira- good service
dale kickett- champion, not sure you can put him in this catagory as im not sure that essendon/stkilda (cant remember who we got him off) wanted him anyway
andrew mcgovern- played his best footy for us, good player
ricky mott- dud
jarrad schofield- disappointing
matt carr- probably second to peter bell, great player, great team man, great pickup
brendan krummel- dud
greg madigan- dud
scott watter- played very few games
Brad rowe- played very little and was ordinary, best game was against fitzroy where he kicked 1.7.... that says it all
tony delaney- injury prone
todd ridley- dud
john hutton- dud

there are many more, but overall of all the players through the years that we have managed to lure back home, i think in general we have lost out... admittadly a lot of these players are guys who we picked in our first season, but surely the bad far and away outweighs the good, we just need to develop our own, whether they are from wa or interstate and do our best to keep them, and if we lose a few then too bad, thats the way it goes, but i think we will find that if we breed a culture of success, reward those that deserve it, and continue to build a young up and coming list, then fewer and fewer players will become homesick and want to leave

^^^ Troy Cook would slot in in between Peter Bell and Matt Carr at #2. In fact I'd put The Wiz in at #3 and Good Carr at #4.

No scratch that....

1. Bell
2. McPharlin
3. Kickett
4. Cook
5. Wiz
6. Good Carr
7. Des
8. Heath Black (technically not a West Aussie, but did "come home")
9. Bad Carr
10. Norrish

As the top 10 players who have "come home" and had a positive influence on the Team. I'm thinking both length of service and what they brought to the table as a vital member of the Team during their period of service.

Criminal that you don't have O'Reilly in there. Some of you forget how good he was, and how much he saved our asses from some frightful thumpings by holding the best full forwards to small totals.

I thought about O'Reilly - I didn't forget him at all... but he was around when we were really crap, and only for 4 seasons and then he buggered off to Carlton when we could have really used his leadership around the club in establishing a culture that had good players wanting to play with us and stay with us....

Maybe I should have squeezed him in around #7 or #8... bit it was also about how the Team was performing when the players were in it.

It wasn't easy to include Bad Carr let me tell you, but he did make it to club VC, captained the club on 3 occasions, and was integral in our push to the Top 4 in 2006...

Norrish beat O'Reilly into *my* Top 10 simply for longevity of service...

And it is only *my* top 10 - completely subjective and not official by any means...

Talk of O'Reilly reminds me of this corker of a post.

Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16, pick 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

Daylight second behind this one.

Still miss you Weaver....

O'Reilly's career ended the day he tore his hamstring off the bone - he would have struggled to outrun Plugger after that. Freo did well to get anything for him.

Here's my effort.

I've dropped Bad Carr out entirely because of his discipline issues and bad last year and Wiz down the list for the number of games he wasn't there. Too many, too frequently. ALso, I don;t think Dessie has done anywhere near enough, but he has been a solid club man and is a good player, plus punching Adam Selwood

As to the original subject of the thread....

:eek::eek::eek: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
