Is it is illegal?

with all the cruely to animals, domesticated pet protection laws etc, is it actually illegal to cull, cook and serve cat?

It was listed on a phillipino restauant's menu up here in Brisbane.

(personally, illegal or not, I find the whole thought repulsive)

I dont about the laws arising from this kind of thing.

I think its gross too, I mean I can cope with game (emu, kangaroo and the like). But a cat???? Thats just wrong!

I can't imagine it being that bad as it's on every local restaurant menu in the Philliphines, along with dog.

Maybe it's an exception as it's a traditional/foreign cuisine?

Im not sure what the police can do about it. Having cat on the menu at a restaurant would have to be legal actually, dont restaurants have to go through preety stringent tests before their allowed to open? Then dont they get checked out every year or so???

In theory, but there are some very dodgy restaurants around. I bet having cat on the menu is illegal.

I love the double standards here. Everyone thinks it's "gross" or "cruel" to be eating cat, yet on the other hand no one is complaining about the Kangaroo and how "cruel" or "gross" that is.

The only issue of cruelty here is how these animals were treated before the were killed, and whether they were killed humanely or not. Cruelty has got NOTHING to do with "eating the cat meat", otherwise eating kangaroos, emus, cows, sheep, rabbit, pigs, chickens and every other animal would be considered cruel too only on the basis that we eat them.

Is it worse than eating a kangaroo? How is it more wrong to eat meat that's been from a wild cat than from a kangaroo or deer? When you think about it, all wild animals are game. Not that I'd eat a cat though. But it's not as wrong as eating any other animal... this is where the double standards pop up.

If it's the domesticated type, then that's illegal. But it doesn't matter... the whole aspect of this cruelty issue comes from depending on how they were treated, and how they were killed. Wild cat or not, inhumane practices are not acceptable and are probably illegal by law anyhow.

If they use wild cats and it's humane, let them be. If they're using domestic cats and/or are being inhumane to either spectrum, throw the book at 'em I say.

Yep. totally agree. Youve hit the nail on the head!

nice

Cats are really quite tasty. Sort of a cross between a penguin and a possum. Little bit chewy, but the tail meat is quite nice

I have no idea on that one.

And just for the record, I am the squeemish type who hasn't been able to bring herself to eat kangaroo, emu, snake, etc etc. I even have problems with the thought of duck and other 'cutsie' type animals.

add rabbit to that list too.

If I didn't love beef so much I would probably have made a good vegetarian!

Exactly what I thought on reading the heading. But doesn't it make you think about those people who now keep pigs for pets?

If they were actually collecting wild cats then I would perhaps not have a problem, I just wouldn't eat them, but if they were stealing pets then I would. (have a problem that is)

As for breeding specifically for eating then it's similar to cows etc but just not socially acceptable yet.

I reckon you'd only get enough for an entree though. :D

However, I still find it abominable just the same as for dogs because they are essentially a domesticated animal.
Kangaroos I am still on the fence.

Apologies to all cat lovers who find my post offensive.

Have you ever been to an abattoir?

Why's it no crueller than grilling a cow, or kangaroo?

It's socially acceptable to eat cat or dog in asian countries. And even in some countries it's not right to eat a cow.

What I do find a problem is the way they are 'prepared'. Many asian countries, Korea for example, kill the dog by drowning it, or chasing it around bashing it over the head with a stick or brick. They believe the extra adrenalin rush the dog has, makes the meat taste better.

For the purposes of clarity I was referring to the western world, or where dog and cat are not plate potential usually. But I agree with you otherwise.

and how is this different to shooting a cow in the head witha nail gun?

pfffft...

just eat meat, it is good for ya : cat/dog/cow/snake/kanga/whatever you want

Generally it's culturally related - western society sees cats and dogs as animals for the lap, not for the dinner table. Having said that not all asians, even the ones in asia, agree with this. Additionally, i remember seeing a documentary a while ago on outback aboriginal women who caught and ate cats. They were feral wild ones though, but still cats nonetheless.

Here we go again.

The simple fact here is that you are dealing with a different culture that enjoys different meat to your traditional Aussie killed meat. How do you think we look to Indians who consider cows sacred? I'll tell you........we look like bloody barbarians.
How can you even consider the cats are family pets? This is an opinion purely based on the nationality of the restaurant owners, and not based on logical thought patterns. In fact it is borderline racism.
Now I'm sure Danni and others will wave their arms around and have hissy fits at me saying that, but ask yourself why you suddenly considered cat as abhorrent on a menu and even considered that pets would be used?
Meat is meat...............you can not tell me, or any sane person, that eating one type of meat is less barbaric or abhorrent than eating another type of meat. I'm not a vegetarian (jesus, I'm not a pansy ;)) but at least I can welcome other cultures without openly biased pre-judgements.
