Interested in people’s thoughts on COS game yesterday.

He is just a baby in afl terms (8 games total?) but he had some shaky moments yesterday.

I think he is going to be awesome, and will be a staple of the side for over a decade, but we need to make sure we don’t expect too much right away, don’t expect him to be flawless in defense.

I would love to see him get some more exposure further up the ground. His tank looks elite for a player of his size. He would be a game changer as a tall wingman.
You just play him. Every single game. I've watched GFC since Newman days, and 3 players have looked this good in their first 10 games. Selwood ofc. Menzel. O'Sullivan.

Bear in mind that I only listened to it rather than watched it (stuck in Easter traffic as a couple of numpties south of the Gold Coast forgot how to drive and decided to have an accident instead), but it did feel like we rode our luck a bit. Any game where you lose the i50s 46-55, you're going to need a bit of luck to win.

That said, at Round 6, it's about banking the points early in close games and getting yourself into a solid position more than it is about form and performance.
Hawks did too though, we should have started the game with a 4-5 goal break on them, and yet we only went 2 goals clear before they kicked their first two.
And for all the talk of Hawks missing easy chances at goals we had a few miss easy chances as well.

he couldnt break in to that midfield we had at the time even before he did his knee tho.
Have a look at his 2008 season and tell me he didn't break into the team though. Played 1 game from Rds 1-10, but then missed 1 game from Rds 11 to the first qualifying final where he did his knee and he was posting some great numbers.

If he doesn't do his knee I doubt his form dips and he plays the PF and GF. Averaging 24 disposals a game from Rds 11-22 and 8 goals in those 10 games.

Leigh Matthews coming out calling for send off rule.

That man must have had some weird epiphany later in life.
Pulling the ladder up behind him. Definitely wouldn't have wanted send off rules when he played or was coaching the early 2000s Lions.

Even in a bad game COS showed something. Tricky conditions but with JHenry in the side he might have been a little more protected. Doing a great job with the mainstays out of the side. He is learning that ..its just week after week… this week he roles up and he could face the blues tall forwards.

I know people have been baying for his blood, but we need to persevere with Knevitt for a block of games.

He needs continuity to show what he is capable of, and we need to find out what he is capable of.

Untill there is a better option , we may as well push games into him. Id like to see him make more of an impact , with Henry struggling I would think he could push forward as a marking option at times but if the MC are happy with the role he is playing then all good.

O’Henry is lost at the moment as Danger has taken his spot. We are actually running with 8 forwards at the moment, meaning that OHenry has been starting on the wing. Interesting yesterday that Blitz was not required in defence with Hawks small forward line. So he alternated on the wing with Dempsey and OHenry. He swapped with Bowes this week, who played defense instead of wing/mid. And the last 2 weeks we’ve run with just the inside 4 midfielders. Smith, Holmes, Atkins have played 80% with Knevitt at 60%. The latter is struggling with only 7 touches.

Side note being at the game : Hawthorn supporters have overtaken Collingwood as the worst, biggest whinging crowd.
Like he does at mf stoppages, Dangerfield takes the oxygen out of the room. His personality, strength, and will just forces everyone else, friend and foe alike, to get out of the way. He's the one leading out of the square with total intent. The others have to take account of him being there. He is just a force wherever he is on the field.
And the guys sending the ball in IMO often look for him first, or only see him because of that force.
IMHO, the forwards group need to work more on their cohesion and group patterns. As has been said, more leads, force the midfielders to hit them up before they bomb it in. Set up the crumbers better when they know the ball in coming into a pack.
Maybe have them watch that 360 segment with Longmire and Simpson and the launch pad. :winkv1:

Completely agree with you. All of them pass the Neighbour Test.

I suspect that Humphries has also really benefited from having to live a little bit of regular adult life for a couple of years, too. A bit of exposure to being a regular shitkicker nobody does talented footballers no harm IMO.
I agree. I said it when TK first came and impressed with his maturity. They've lived in the real world. They're men, not boys.
They're not even living in the dorms or frats, they've been off campus with responsibilities and paying bills.
Humphries also seems to naturally have a good head on his shoulders. He's a great fit for the GFC, an astute bit of recruitment.

Great summary!
Last year, OHenry was working in with Rohan, this year it is Danger...

The only guy I remember from the Lions in that era doing something that was really outrageous by the standards of the day was Lynch in the 2004 GF.

It was really interesting watching Lethal interviewed on Open Mike about his on-field violence in the 70s and 80s. He wasn't proud of it, and if anything shied away from the subject a little. He did make the point that it was a very different moral code at the time, and hence we have lost a little perspective on the culture that surrounded footy at the time.

However he played, he retired 40 years ago now and it doesn't stop him from being correct. It's only a matter of time until someone repeats king-hit tactics on opposition players in a GF and it wins or nearly wins them the game, like in did in 1970 (Peter McKenna), 1971 (Peter Hudson), 1973 (Geoff Southby) and 1989 (Brereton).

Like to know the numbers for the Easter Monday game. How many Geelong supporters…how many Haks supports. I believe that its a replacement game for Hawks for their Tas home games … so do Hawk supporters get into the game as a home game? With 88 G at the game… what sort of profit do we make ? I didnt go as the club removed the MCG games for our membership once we got 10 home games at KP ..so id be interested to see what the attendance numbers were. Shame we will never be told.

On TV … I got the feeling that Hawks were in control for longer than we were. Both clubs butchered shots at goal .. so its hard to know if oen club should have won if all made the most of their chances.

BSmith is working out better for his playing profile than anyone could have hoped for. Is it greedy to wish we could have another? We have some guys who I dont think are at their best atm. Stengles set shots are not the normal write it down ..and OHenry seems to be adding in drips rather than floods. Overall .. I think we are still transition the side… still so many players that are short of their prime.

I have sneaking suspicion one best enjoy these wins as there will be games were the result may not be as tolerable but they side keep surprising me. The Crows game…now this game. We are finding a way. We are covering Hawk with Danger ..and being lucky to still have Stanley.

This.

I never really understand how someone making a point after they finish playing - especially decades down the track when the game has changed a lot and they have had time to reflect on their own mistakes or the way they played, they’ve had time to watch the game as a mentor and father figure and commentator, why their history would be used against them when they make a comment that is fairly correct.

If Freddie Mercury said nearing his death bed that, retrospectively, it’s a bad idea to have ludicrous amounts of unprotected sex during the AIDS epidemic you’d probably shrug and go ‘yeah he’s probably got a point’ wouldn’t you?

Why were the ferals booing Baz so much

Just cos?

Probably because of Impey?

Before or after Impey

BTW
Baz said he was a Hawks’ fan growing up + knew about the feud.

There was a moment early in the 3rd where Hawks got a midfield clearance and Newcombe I think delivered the ball to Chol who positioned himself in front of COS and marked and goaled. You could see COS nodding his head as if to say I know what I did wrong there. No silly remonstrating but a reflection on what he can learn from it

He had the same thing happen to him on (I think) Gunston in the first quarter.

At this stage in his career he is a very good intercepting/3rd man up defender, but he is shaky 1 on 1. That is perfectly acceptable, and as you say he will get some more protection when jhenry or kolo come back.

When they both come back into the side I think COS should move up the field.

Yup - happened a lot. But I'm certain the coaches will be on to it to get them all into the right mindset.

Just a little thing - James Sicily was diabolically bad. That shot in the last quarter with minutes to go - puts it out on the full. Can you imagine Selwood doing that? Horrible day for him.

No, and Tommy didn't miss from 60m out, but Smith made our night when he shanked it!
Sicily sooking, cry me a river, they whinged for frees the whole game.
Have to laugh at their board, campaigner excuses, umpires, players missing (Day etc) but no mention of Henry and Kolo for us. And Stewart needed the run.

The bay of Hawks near us sooked the entire match.

At the end of it I had to scream at them "suck on that you ****ing bitches" and give them all the double finger
