i reckon you blokes ought to throw the kitchen sink at brisbane for bradshaw. yes you had a shocker season but that was probably just an aberration. with the team playing to its undoubted potential and with a REAL marking forward to kick to, you blokes could be the big threat next year. it is obvious that the doggies, with the recruiting of hackermanis, believe that their time is now. i think your mob could challenge that with the right pick up this week. draft picks, while good, will not win you a flag with your current crop of players. i say go for it now. if you dont, i hope he lands at the dees.

Exactly. Pick 25 isn't a guarantted superstar. Neither is pick 7 for that matter. It's a gamble drafting kids. Yes it's got better over time but there's a lot of top 10 picks over the past few years that have struggled to make the big time.

Bradshaw is a gun. A proven goalkicker who can lead, pack mark and outmuscle defenders to get the pill andis handy on the ground. Hawkins won't kick us 60 goals next year, in a few years hopefully so but not next year. Ditto Nath who will play more so at CHF, HF along with Mooney.

If we want to be serious contenders we need Bradshaw at FF. We are not in a rebuilding stage so get him to the club and have him kick us to a flag next year.

Although I have been hoping that we'd keep Kelly, if we can get Bradshaw for our #2 pick plus Kelly (traded to Brisbane or for another #2 pick), I'd have to say that was a win for us and Kelly should go. Bradshaw could have 3-6 good years left, and NAblett and Hawkins still need some time to develop.

If you look at our picks in the draft, we will get 2 quality young players even if we get rid of our #2 pick. It would mean drafting a good, quick midfielder with our #1 pick (Proud etc.), then getting a freebee 'Hawkins' with pick #3. Plus Bradshaw.

So would you give up pick 7 for Bradshaw and pick 22. Still trade Kelly for pick 20 and we would have 3 top 25 picks and Bradshaw. Could draft Houli at 20, Connors at 22 & Moss/Hurley at 25.

Yep, the key paragraph being:

Now that Voss and Michael are gone, they have plenty of room.

Money is now not the issue.

Voss is still under contract for next year and they have to include his pay out which is a reported $900,000.

Not sure how that works. It would be a negotiated settlement which wouldn't reflect as much as he'd get paid if he was playing. However, I'm not sure which figure gets included in the cap. I have a feeling it is the negotiated settlement.

In any event, Brisbane are losing a dearth of experienced players which will ensure that they will have no problem in finding an extra $100,000 for Bradshaw.

Maybe the lions are clearing the salary cap so they can have a crack at 2 out of contract queenslanders next year. Hale & Riewoldt.

Obviously what I am writing is based on what I have read and reading between the lines.

I see where your coming from. You'd think that with Akermanis gone they should have no problem with salary as he'd have to be on about 400 k.

What is an interesting is how Voss's payout affects the veterans list. Can Voss's pay out be included on the veteran list or not? If he didn't retire obviously only half would be part of the salary cap. Because he is retiring I suspect it all has to be included. Potentially an extra 450 k.

Yeah and they're deliberately tanking so they can pick them up for nix at the PSD

wasn't Aka on a smaller paypacket but had included in his contract he could chase extra cash through media work? Just saying I am not sure he was on 400k and may have been on more like 250k??

Certainly an option. Is there that much of a difference between say Proud / Jetta or Hurley/Houli? If not then pick 7 is up for grabs and Brisbane would most certainly entertain that idea.

If not then why would you not take it into consideration. From the sounds of thing this years crop is highly sought due to the amount of KPP whereas we would more than likely be looking for mids / ball carriers so it really wouldn't effect us too much. There is no guarantee that the top 10, 20 or 30 are going to be superstars.

Good point. I remember something like that but have no idea about the figures.

give brisbane Kelly and our second round pick. S.Johnson should be kept on as he's a gamebreaker, but Kelly is expendable if it means bringing in a gun forward. First round pick is off the table. I want two gun rookies from this years alleged superdraft. Hawkins and hopefully Jetta.

Geelong are very interested, Brisbane want Kelly, Geelong don't want to give him up.

Personally, i don't think it's such a great loss.

surely this is a real no brainer...

I didnt know that brisbane had shown interest in kelly
how is that a no-brainer
i think that their midfield only needs selwood from this draft and it will be fine for another 6 years. Kelly wont make much difference
so i dont reckon it is a no brainer

no brainer for the GFC...if that is all brisbane are asking for.

agree!

Kelly could be good for them, but we have to give up something good to land good players. We have early picks in the draft to get in new midfielders.

If they only want Kelly.......SOLD.

I know Bradshaw is getting on but trading a bloke that kicked 60 goals last season for a fringe midfielder? They couldn't possibly be that stupid. Especially with Bradshaw capable of playing in defence and the Lions just losing their only options at FB and CHB to retirement.

I think you'll find the rationale is that Kelly was injured for large part of this season but still played.

He is also still relatively young and impressed Leigh Matthews 2 years back when he ran with Nigel Lappin and did quite well against him.

Kelly undoubtedly has talent, but personality and attitude are his problems.

Kelly to stay with Cats

09 October 2006 Herald-Sun

GEELONG will not put midfielder James Kelly on the trade table.

While every club in the competition has inquired about the status of the out-of-favour Cat, Kelly's manager Liam Pickering is adamant he will stay at Skilled Stadium.

"He has two years to run on a three-year contract and I have asked the club several times and they have categorically stated he will not be traded," Pickering said.

Kelly endured a horror season and had several stints in the VFL. He finished in the bottom five of the club's best-and-fairest with just 17 votes. Paul Chapman won the Cats' gong with 462 votes.

Defender Tim Callan is likely to seek a trade while there has been little interest in full-forward Kent Kingsley who quit the club last month.

While the Cats are unlikely to be major players in trade week, they are expected to ask Fremantle about forward Paul Medhurst who they see as a possible replacement for Kingsley.
