West Coast coach Adam Simpson has confirmed recruit Drew Petrie will require surgery.

Petrie copped a blow to his hand early in the first quarter of his first match for the Eagles.

He bravely played out the match against former club North Melbourne with what was later diagnosed as a fractured hand.

Simpson confirmed the extent of the injury after the match.

Was against drafting him, but the bloke has a bit of heart to do that. Hope it rubs off on a few of the others.

Feels like EMac has lost his mojo. Sometimes it's the little things with him. A lapse in concentration, half a step back, can't find the right option, outpositioned i the contest etc. things he didn't really have a problem with before. He needs a longer stint in the WAFL to recapture that.
