Not sure how much home town support the aussies get tomorrow. After the selectors screwing over mennie & ferguson & now wost of all sayers. SA crowd might be more interested in some blokes failing.

Selection does give SA a good chance at going top of the shield when they play the Vics this weekend. I hope Sayers gets another MOTM not that the selectors will notice

The proof will be how many runs this "backstop" costs Australia with his missed catches.
Agreed. Sure he might make a scratchy 50 but just as likely to cost 100 runs screwing up the basics he's employed to do. Looks like a nerd as well.

Once the match starts we are all Australian

The thing with Wades batting is that at least he can be depended on to help form a decent partnership.

Its more valuable than just the runs he scores

Matt Renshaw reminds me of the fat kid from 'Hey Dad!'

Since when does most of the SA crowd actually show an interest in the test anyway? Most of them will be doing what they always do- getting on the piss outside.

Surely Siddle is done??? Cummins needs to come back into the side. Stop with this 'managing' rubbish. Blood the youth
Dunno, lillee was peaking as a fast bowler in his early 30's and he's still a lot better than what's going around at the moment.

Trying to think of a time Australia had so many changes to Test team.
I think only outdone when World Series Cricket ended.

Here is Aussie team and squad just before it:

Australian squad
Australia had just lost the Ashes to England 5-1 and drawn against Pakistan 1-1 during the 1978-79 summer. They had also finished a poor 1979 World Cup campaign.

The squad selected by Ray Lindwall, Sam Loxton and Phil Ridings were as follows:

The team was very inexperienced, with ten of the players never having toured before, and none having gone to India. Jeff Moss, Trevor Laughlin and Gary Cosier, who had been part of the 1979 World Cup squad, were not selected - they were replaced by Wood, Higgs, Sleep and Yardley. Peter Toohey, who had impressed with the bat in Australia's 3-2 victory over India in 1977-78, was also overlooked due to a poor 1978-79 test season. John Inverarity, the highly experienced Western Australian captain and former test player, appears never to have been considered for selection, despite a fine domestic season of cricket in 1978-79.

Captaincy
Although Graham Yallop had captained Australia during the 1978-79 summer, he was replaced by Kim Hughes when injured, and when Yallop returned to the side, the Australian Cricket Board decided to persist with Hughes. They also elected Hilditch as vice captain rather than Yallop. However Yallop was kept as a selector.

On-tour selection panel: Hughes, Hilditch, Yallop.

Australia 6th Test team v India at Bombay (November 3rd 1979)
AMJ Hilditch
GN Yallop
AR Border
KJ Hughes*
DF Whatmore
WM Darling
PR Sleep
KJ Wright
G Dymock
RM Hogg
JD Higgs

1st Test team back in our own summer was the following:

Australia 1st Test team v West Indies at Gabba (Dec 1st 1979)
BM Laird
RB McCosker
AR Border
GS Chappell*
KJ Hughes
DW Hookes
RW Marsh
RJ Bright
DK Lillee
RM Hogg
JR Thomson

8 changes in total.

Only Km Hughes, Allan Border and Rodney Hogg survived.
7 of players coming into team were from the WSC Aussie side.
Greg Chappell was captain of this side.
Jeff Thomson was basically out of cricket in that time recovering from injuries I think so was not in World Series Cricket I saw but back for this first Test of summer v West Indies.
Bruce Laird an opener was only player on debut but he had been our opener against Windies in WSC cricket so not really new to most of us.

West Indies Test team was same side that we saw playing World Series Cricket.
Most of us that saw cricket saw West Indies almost every summer for nearly 5 summers.

Our last Supertest side was in February of 1979 in West Indies.

WSC Australia
R B McCosker
B M Laird
M F Kent
G S Chappell
I M Chappell*
D W Hookes
R W Marsh
R J Bright
D K Lillee
J R Thomson
L S Pascoe

Ian Chappell I think retired and took up the full time commentator for channel 9
Martin Kent and Lenny Pascoe did not make the 1st Test side back in Australia later that year.
So Kim Hughes and Allan Border replaced Kent and Ian Chappell for batting part of team and Rodney Hogg was favoured over Lenny Pascoe as a pace bowler in the official Test side.

Thanks for that. Interesting reading.

Dare say the changes from the final Indian test to the 1st test v West Indies were positive. They were pretty good ins

The Sayers non selection is an absolute disgrace.

takes 11 wickets with the pink ball in a recent shield game, Bird takes 2, and Bird gets the nod.

F*** you CA, you not get a cent off me this summer!.

Actually it was 6 v 6 in the pink ball game.

Still they should have picked him. He offers something different & in dead rubber it was worth a try. Bird & Hazelwood offer pretty much the same thing
