Another single digit score for Ferguson, that makes 6 in a row. The selectors definitely made the right call dropping him.

Obviously replaced with the wrong guy though as Patterson is looking very good once again.
You would have to think SMarsh comes in for Maddinson if fit, regardless of what he scores in the second dig. If Smarsh isn't fit, then Maddinson needs a big score in the second innings or Patterson surely comes in.

Marsh
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
Patterson

That is the top 6 for me but the selectors have said they will stick with players so either Maddinson or Renshaw will likely get a decent go, probably not both though as Marsh will likely come in when fit. I suppose he'd just take whoever spot is up out of the two.

Only fair Maddinson goes as he had quite a fair lower average than Renshaw and was probably last picked

I'd be happier to give Renshaw another go as we have a dearth of openers knocking down the door. Plus, SMarsh can comfortably slot into number 5 if fit, as can Patterson if he is not.

Keep Renshaw in there. Marsh could bat 5. I'd much prefer Renshaw getting 5 or 6 matches to see how he handles it. Waaaay better than clueless Joe Burns.

Pretty hard to have confidence when you get dropped after one test

Patterson is really starting to hammer the door down now. Makes the Maddinson selection even more perplexing.
Pattersons problem is he's not scoring tons, hes getting 50s. Everyone hated Shane Watson for that.

Travis Heads century is encouraging. Wish he stuck with wicketkeeping!

Patterson should come in for Maddison.

Hazelwood
Lyon

Dropping Maddinson for a bad performance would be stupid since he clearly wasn't picked for form reasons. They had to expect he'd perform poorly.

I wouldn't have picked him, but if that's the way they want to go then he needs a decent run in the team.

A big 1! 1!! Huge.
That along with the fact that he has managed to get over double figures in the last 6 innings should have him a fair way ahead of Ferguson.

Also has a much better average despite being 8 years younger.

He's definitely ahead of anyone else vying for that position IMO.

Age doesnt come into it. Stop treating test match cricket like AFL. There is no mythical premiership. You win every game possible.

SMarsh will come back in when fit, you don't drop someone with the recent performances he has. Someone will give way, whether it's Renshaw or Maddinson. That's not an indictment on their skills, just a fact of life, and they should have the confidence to go back to the Shield knowing they are well in the frame. You don't stick with them for the sake of it.

i feel like 4 changes to the squad for Pakistan and then we will have the perfect mix.
Renshaw for Shaun Marsh (Renshaw a bit unlucky here but he needs to make way for a better batsmen at the moment. Renshaw will take his place maybe in a summer or two)
Lyon for Jon Holland (Unless Gaz gets some wickets in this second innings i think hell be gone. Holland the most in-form spinner at the moment so he comes in)
Maddinson for Patterson (Maddinson probably shouldnt have been picked in the first place and patterson should have. No brainer really.)
Wade for Nevill (I know this one will cause some debate. I have a few reasons for this. Firstly, the keeping side of things. People say Nevill is a WAY better keeper than Wade. I dont think it needs to go that far as Wade is certainly competent. However there is no debate that Nevill has him covered in this facet of the game. This then puts Nevill 1-0 up on him so far. Secondly, Nevill has more ability to bat for longer periods which can be useful at some points. On the other hand Wade is capable of scoring runs more quickly which is also useful. I think though being a test match it is more sensible to go with Nevill to bat for longer periods. Lastly, this biggest issue of them all is the batting. I have gathered some statistics from this summer of both of them. Read into them what you like but I think it actually proves wrong what most people think of Wade being the better batsman as Nevill seems to be in better form right now.)
Matador BBQs Cup- tie

Matthew Wade- 84 runs @28.00

Peter Nevill- 105 runs @26.25

Sheffield Shield- tie

Matthew Wade- 113 runs @28.25

Peter Nevill- 115 runs @28.75- currently not out in the shield at the moment.

Test Matches- Nevill wins

Matthew Wade- 4 runs @4.00

Peter Nevill- 92 runs @30.66

It does when you are talking about career averages. Patterson is just hitting his straps now so if he keeps going the way he has that average will continue to rise. Ferguson, despite being 31 still has an average under 40.

If the priority was injury cover then you don't pick someone who is out of form in the first place.

Maddinson was always going to be a passenger this test, and probably for the rest of the summer truth be told. He was clearly picked as a long term prospect. Dropping him for form after a couple of matches would make no sense.

No one is denying the pick was a head scratcher. But the selectors clearly wanted to see him in Australian colours. It doesn't mean he can't make way; Renshaw is also young and a hope for the future, no sense in dropping him either. But SMarsh is in good form and you still pick your best team. One has to go, I'd choose Maddinson.

If they were picking their best team they wouldn't have picked Maddinson for this Test.

You're basically saying he should be dropped because you wouldn't have picked him in the first place, which is ignoring the logic that is actually being used by the selectors.

No one understands fully what logic they are using, but the fact that we had injury and form issues meant they could play around a little. That doesn't mean SMarsh won't come straight back in to the team when fit (and in fact, it would be a slap in the face if he didn't, given he was dropped after scoring 182 because the incumbent was fit). One of Renshaw and Maddinson will give way, take your pick. Personally, project player or not, if Maddinson fails in the second innings, it makes more sense for it to be him. We have more need for another reliable opener than a middle order bat.
