Wouldn't bring Rocca in against St Kilda as they have just to many running defenders in Fisher, Gram, Gilbert and Dal Santo, Goaddard when they play there. Rocca planted deep forward against Carlton possibly, but not Saints.

I tend to agree that Mick is unlikely to make too many changes to a winning side.

In: Reid, Stanley / Sidebottom
Out: Anthony (susp), Beams (inj)

Reid could play in defence and allow the Brown's or Maxwell to swing forward if needed. Was going to pop Bryan in, but same probably as Rocca, not enough athleticism to run with St Kilda defenders. Reid could be the man. Dick is another chance, but seem to have enough small forwards.

I was "sick" and didn't go to uni today so I queued up the HDD and watched the recording of Friday night's game. Toovey was outstanding. No doubt about it. I seriously suggest you watch the game again. Some players, you will realise, played better than you remember (Dane Swan played even better than I thought, Leon played a little worse than I thought, Barham is incredibly fast, L. Brown does nothing, Corrie is very agile and has good hands etc). I don't know if you were kidding... but really. Toovey is fast, has great decision making in close and his kicking is actually about a 70/30 prospect (and improving). I'm getting tired of people bashing the same players week-in week-out for no reason.

Oh, and this may surprise you; Tooves actually set up several rebounds out of defence. Go and watch the replay, I dare you.

Thats all fair. I'm not the biggest Toovey fan but he shouldn't be dropped based on last weeks game. I do worry how he is going to handle the step up in intensity against the Saints though. The pressure was non-existent in the Kangas game so not the best game to judge him on. I disagree about his decision making skills - I think he's shown they've been
sh!thouse again and again - although they're improving. I'm looking forward to how he performs against the best tackling team in the comp, will show where he is at. A huge test for Tooves.

Warming to the idea of Reid coming in instead of Rocca, and N Brown playing forward and Maxwell swinging forward at times.

It would be a risky move though to play the top team with a makeshift forward line. With Anthony and Didak out, Medhurst proppy, Macaffer inexperienced and Cloke out of form, it would be a tough call to also omit Rocca who is a proven big game performer and instead play a backman like Brown or Maxwell in the forward line.

At the end of the day I think Rocca will play if fit, but its good to see Reid playing well in the seconds and giving the selectors something to think about.

On the Bryan V L Brown debate, its a no-brainer. L Brown is a better defender but we really dont need an extra defender at present. Bryan is a better ruckman and on current form a better chance to make a contribution in the forward line. Around the ground Brown has the edge but I dont think we'd miss his contribution there. Bryan should come in.

Sorry for contributing! Thought I'd add my two cents as to the team changes, as I've watched all the pies matches this year.

Dunno whether it was a contribution more so than telling us what was going to happen.

That's cool though, nothing wrong with a diverse selection committee. :thumbsu:

Could be a difficult week to strike the right balance particularly if Medhurst doesn't come up (and personally I don't think he will play) - he'll undoubtedly be named, but as usual we'll have no idea whether he'll play until 30 mins before they run out. With Shaw coming in you'd have two forwards out for one defender at this stage, which leaves us a bit exposed up forward.

If Anthony and Medhurst are out, then I think we can do worse than go for a smaller more mobile forward line, that will be better equipped to apply heaps of defensive pressure on St Kilda. With this in mind I can't have Rocca this week. In fact I can see a more defensive minded team selected in general.

IN: Shaw, Dick & Stanley
OUT: Anthony, Medhurst & Corrie (unlucky)

I can't see how Corrie could be dropped given the game he had. Also, dropping him goes counter to your strategy of playing a small forwardline.

He would be very unlucky - but he played more of a midfield role than a forward one last week, and he isn't renowned for his defensive pressure - think we'd get more out of Stanley & Dick in this sort of role.

All you can do is go off their track record at the top level and Corrie's has been exceptional this year, ludicrous to even suggest dropping him.
Might as well chuck out Pendles and Swan while your there, they were great on the weekend as well but Pendles isn't renowned for being really tough and Swan is renowned for erratic kicking... We might get more out of some blokes playing in the VFL

Corrie was a small forward who rotated through the midfield, as most of our small forwards do. He kicked two goals so definitely spent some time in there. While Dick will hopefully end up a better player than Corrie I can't seem him matching Corrie's 20 posession 2 goal game if he came in this week.

As for Stanley, we may have to accept that he is one of those midfielders who tear it up at the VFL level but won't progress further. We've had a few and moved them on (e.g. Ben Davies) and they've failed to make a mark on the AFL in other clubs as well.

Tremendous use of sarcasm there.... much appreciated.

I think it's fair to say on what I've seen of Corrie over his whole career, rather than just one game, is that applying defensive pressure isn't his strong suit. He was great last week with his finishing, but I believe our best chance this week is to tackle and harass at every contest and as such Dick and Stanley might be better suited.

It pains me to say this but I'd be seriously considering Bryan this week and swapping him and Josh at FF and going small when one needed a rest on the bench.

In: Shaw Bryan

I'm more focused on Dick's 20 odd tackles in the last two weeks, rather than Corrie's last game, as good as it was - horses for courses.

Stanley has earned the right to a senior game, whether he takes his chance is up to him.

Tackles is all very well but that alone won't win us a game. Not to mention I wonder how many tackles Dick would be able to stick against the Staints bigger bodies. As for Stanley, all I can suppose is that there is something in his game the the coaching staff don't like. Its not like our midifield is so good that we have to keep out a gun player...

I like the idea of the small forward line. I think you might be right about Dicks inclusion (although hopefully Stanley plays) but possibly at the expense of Beams if he doesn't come up. I doubt Corrie will be dropped as he was so good last week. He's the sort of mobile player that might be the key against the Saints. Corrie actually had 5 tackles last week which is pretty impressive considering he isn't rated for his defensive skills. Certainly didn't let the team down in this regard so he should be pretty safe this week.

Yep, I forgot about Beams - if he misses then Corrie will certainly play IMO. Fair point about the number of tackles - didn't notice it myself. Hopefully he can keep this up as he adds some pace and finishing ability and he did look good - just hoping it isn't a flash in the pan.

you guys think reid would play on reiwoldt if he came in?

If Reid plays it might go like this:

FB: Presti > Kosi
CHB: Harry O > Reiwoldt
BP/HBF: Reid > Blake if forward or the resting ruckman (or as a loose man in defence or forward utility)

Utility: Maxwell > Goddard

CHF: Cloke > Fisher
FF: N Brown > Dawson

Doubt it'll happen but not a bad idea IMO. It means we don't have to bring in Rocca and get owned on the rebound. Plus there's a bit of flexibility in there if needed. Reid would get owned on Reiwoldt in his form so not really the best match up for him.
