Preview Changes/Preview, (post #449) Port Adelaide

I reckon you are way over estimating Thomas's value at the end of last year.
Not me, there were a few articles that mentioned it and I was surprised too, mostly from GC .

So much talk on multiple threads about getting rid of players. Totally ridiculous. We will get where we need to be through unity, the club understands this.

Did any of the articles talk about likely trade price? I'd be shocked if it was remotely close to a first rounder.

I actually think his form this year is pretty similar to last year, except he's been a bit less efficient. He's playing ok this year, but last year his efficiency was Bruest-esque, I'm not sure if he's good enough to maintain that level across seasons.

The strangest thing is that we are looking as good as any team. A few people seem to have read the preseason hype and decided anything less than a 10 goal win is a major underachievement.

JT was a free agent we couldn’t cash in on him.
It’s a convenient story to say that we could have actually gotten something for him though. Don’t let facts get in the way of a good story.

Yeah I'll take credit he's now playing well and doing his job
Must read my posts
Not panicking as much
Rekin he we you and me were all lucky orazio wasn't on
But still being technical like others have I could say His man kicked 3
Didn't moores kick 4
But we play a zone generally so like stats it isn't a genuine indication of what's going on

Been watching games?
Notice that port unloaded some guys and re stocked with speed , class and enthusiasm
Same as Geelong
Same as eagles
Same as dockers

Watching our reserves?
Miles off the pace
Any concerns

I'll stick to my guns as it seems Thomas is deflating in value every week
Obvious
Won't get a first rounder now
Could have last year
Gold Coast boy 3 first rounders on offer

It's a good thing to be loyal
Dosent win flags it seems no more

No way were we getting a first rounder from GC for Thomas last year. Yes there was potential in a trade for him, but wasn't assurance of a first rounder. On top of that Elliott was never a sure thing to come back and play. Hence why Thomas was of importance.

You question Thomas value then state he will be in the VFL soon in another post, but then bag our vfl depth as being the reason we wont win a flag this year. So confusing

Out: Thomas, Greenwood/Roughead
In: Elliot, Quaynor

I don't rate Aish. Just don't see what he brings to the team.

I don't follow the VFL so I don't know how Quaynor is traveling, but he's exactly the sort of player we need in the side. I can't see how he wouldn't offer more than Aish.

Unless Greenwood is putting a hard tag on one of the opposition's gun midfielders then he is a liability as he's useless forward or back.

Josh Thomas has surely had enough chances by now. An absolute non-contributer this season.

Persist with Callum Brown and give him more of a go in the midfield.

Beams and De Goey to alternate between the midfield and the forward line.

If Beams has another down game against Port then let him have some time off to heal (surely he's playing injured ?) and bring Wells in.

Did you tag me in because Moore is no good this year because of the 4 kicked against him?

What's up with Beams?

Last year I actually bothered watching some Brisbane games as they have an exciting young list and from what I saw Beams was in ripping form. Looked like an absolute gun. I was stoked to have him back at first, but now I'm having serious doubts. He doesnt look like half the player he was last year.

Since Sier came in last year we had a complete mid-field with Wells, Callum Brown, Rupert Wills among others as depth. Just not sure what Beams really adds. Callum and Wills are midfielders and are wasted as forwards. I assume Beams is playing with an injury so maybe throw him forward for a few games and let young Callum have 2-3 games in the midfield to see how he goes? We want to see De Goey in the guts more, but he's also badly needed forward. Maybe Beams and De Goey can play 50/50 midfield and forward?

What is Wills future? From what I've heard it doesn't sound like trying to reinvent him as a forward is working. We already had a stacked midfield in 2018. Sier completed the midfield in the 2nd half of the year. Beams is meant to be the cherry on top in 2019. But because of the lack of balance we're crying out every game to throw our best forward into the middle. It's a frustrating situation and I'd like to see us shuffle the old deck chairs around to find that better balance.

A midfield full of one way runners in Pendles, Sidey, Beams, Treloar and Phillips is proving to be one-dimensional and in urgent need of being balanced out. Is there still no word on what the hell is going on with Sier? It's hard to try to fit him into the equation. Is he injured? Causing trouble behind the scenes? We need him back ASAP and if that's not able to happen any time soon then maybe give Wills another go. I'm not even putting Daniel Wells into the equation because we can't rely on him.

People are so averse to any kind of change here though. Why, I'm not sure. Seems the only solution anyone can think of each week is "Get De Goey in the guts!". How many other teams take their best forward out of the forward line every week to be the difference maker in the middle? We've got a dynamic and unpredictable forward line (although some teams have little problem figuring out how to play our forwards) but when you take De Goey out of there we're having to rely on a ruckman and a defender in Cox and Mihocek who are lucky to get a goal a game and an inconsistent skinny 19 year old who's clearly struggling in his 2nd year. Elliot still hasn't gelled with our forward line structure. Roughead hasn't really complimented our defense at all. We get torched by guys like Liam Ryan and Petrucelle because we don't have any quick players that can go with them. I've got West Coast, Geelong, GWS and even Richmond firmly ahead of us.

Port are unpredictable and are pretty dangerous at their best so I wouldn't want to change too much next week, but after that we've got Carlton, Saints, Sydney, Dockers and then Melbourne leading into the bye rounds and I think we can afford to take some risks with those games and change things up a bit. I can't see any reason not to bring in Quaynor during that relatively easy run of games.

Or we can keep telling ourselves "We're 2nd on the ladder" "We've got the best midfield in the comp" "Aish and Thomas fit our structure well" rather than recognize where we can improve and start making some small changes each week in an easy run of games to set ourselves up properly for the rest of the season after the byes and leading into the finals.
Wrong thread.

The vultures are circling. We just need Pie Beast back and we can really have some fun!

Try and imagine how many drinks ago you are talking about. All I remember is thinking "deal".

I’ll give you a moment to reflect on why trading him in 2017 would have yeilded us close to nothing....
You could give me an eternity but I meant he was a free agent in 2017 not 18.

Why? We thumped Richmond, led Geelong till time on after a terrible performance and inaccurate kicking, have the wood on GWS and are always in the game against the Eagles.

We are a game inside the 8 now, its time really create separation. My early tip is pies by 28

8 point game this week nahnah time to flex our muscles 💪🏻

The giants imo are overrated, yes they have a lot of high end talent but they also have a lot of rubbish and lack physicality.

Richmond are not a threat to us

Geelong are a threat but I would still back us in

The eagles are a threat big time and hopefully they miss the 4 or get knocked out before we have to face them in a final

IMO, the ins pick themselves, Aish and Elliott, but the outs are a wee bit more complicated.

Greenwood came in for Aish so I think we’ll see him go back out.

Where it gets more interesting is who goes out for Elliott? I think there are three alternatives Varcoe, JT and Brown.

Balance is key and when Varcoe goes out we lose a bit going the other way.

JT doesn’t look hungry to me and is playing like a guy that’s content with how he’s going the thing is he’s still getting to dangerous positions. He was the two chase down tackles from Saad away from being looked on as a good contributor on the day. Personally I view that as a tick for Saad rather than a cross for JT.

We then have Brown who isn’t yet established, but with every opportunity is finding his way a little more.

Ultimately because we’re win now I have to look at each guys best then go from there and that to me is JT>Varcoe>Brown.

The curveball is undoubtedly the disclosure of Elliott’s injury. Until Thursday’s team is announced I won’t be convinced he was out due to a corked glute and that it’s a one week injury. However I am convinced that if it was he’ll be in because there’s no way he’ll be “rested” or given a run at VFL level as I’ve seen it speculated on.

Jeeze some of you have bloody short memories - this time last year we were sitting 12th and in desperate trouble.

Those of us with a sense of proportion and some modicum of patience realize this team is steadily building.

Some of you have the attention span of a goldfish and the common sense of a dalmation.

No one is panicking jonbe54 but what do you think the changes will be?

I would go Elliott for Thomas just because that holding the ball that led to the Daniher goal killed me......I may have lost it.

If Elliott makes the grade this week we have to balance which good attributes we are prepared to lose.

It may come down to who the coaching staff considers makes the least contribution to the game plan at present, in combination with projected match ups on game day.

Times like these I'm glad I'm not a selector.

State league affiliate: Collingwood (VFL)
This weekend: Essendon v Collingwood - Saturday, April 27, 2pm, Windy Hill

Swingman Ben Reid is gradually building form in the VFL, kicking two goals from 22 disposals in Collingwood's 37-point loss to Essendon.

Reid was also dominant in the air, finishing with 12 marks and eight hit-outs as a reserve ruck.

Rupert Wills had 28 disposals and eight tackles and was his industrious self, while draftee Isaac Quaynor finished with 21.

Classy runner Daniel Wells recorded 20 disposals, five marks and a goal in his third game back from a long-term foot injury.

How good is it mate that our selectors have a hard job this week?

Massive game this week.....win this and we are on our way this season IMO.
