Strategy Changes: Round 7 Fremantle Dockers vs Adelaide Crows

Well said.
Big apols for being a cracked record on tackling, but imo Freo players' tackling technique is woeful apart from Andy Brayshaw (also our Rising Star who does a neat minimalist arm grab). Most seem to tackle round waist or lower and it slides off like water off the proverbial.
Where are the boys going wrong?
As someone who played both Aussie rules and rugby, tackling’s about balance, footwork and timing. Concentrating on the centre of gravity of the player you’re tackling and not committing early allows more success; good tacklers stay balanced and commit when they have a high probability of success. Keeping feet moving towards the target and never stopping reduces your risk of getting faked out too.

I feel like our guys overcommit and don’t keep their feet moving enough. Still, could be worse; watching American football players tackle is cringeworthy. Do they never get taught how to do it?!?

I've played both as well and the techniques are so different from code to code.

American Football is a disgrace to tackling. Padded up like those sumo suits just launching themselves like hu an missiles.

The techniques are different, but the basics are the same. I was an enthusiastic tackler as an Aussie rules player then played rugby and became much much better; it was where to concentrate when tackling and the footwork to make a balanced tackle that made the difference.

What’s interesting about American football tacklers is that the odd guy that does get the technique right has the same basic technique as a good rugby (or Aussie rules) tackler, and often gets picked in the all star sides despite being less athletic or smaller. The human missile technique is very, well, hit or miss.

Hey Freo fans! Was having a read through your thread and saw this and had to laugh. You see the exact same thing said about Nicks!

I guess this one is going to come down to the best pre-game strategy then? 😂

Hoping for a good entertaining game tomorrow night, because by god we have seem some absolutely atrocious ones between our clubs in the past.

Good luck!
I think the only thing Nicks does a bit better is get his team to be a bit more aggressive going forward.
You’d have said before this year JLo was better defensively but that’s been a shambles this year.

Hope for a good game, I’ve enjoyed watching your boys so far this year and I’m concerned if we don’t turn up it could be a huge blow out. No Fogarty helps a bit though.

Nope, it aint about what you own, its about actions

Difference between a viewer and a supporter, supporters don't leave

I assume real supporters never miss games for any reason either. And of course real supporters have to be fully paid up members whether they have the money for it or not.

It’s completely different. American football tackling is about knocking the ball carrier to ground or knocking the ball out through impact. Ret@rding the player doesn’t matter as long as the knee or elbow makes contact with the ground. Offloads (laterals) are also extremely uncommon so there’s really no need to wrap the arms like in rugby or Aussie rules.

No, real supporters just don't leave before a game is finished

its a pretty simple thing and quite obvious

absolutely pissweak to leave early

Weird mindset. If you pay money to watch a team perform and they’re down 12 goals after half time you have every right to find better things to do with the rest of your day.

I think you'll find its the common mindset

Gutless to leave early, don't go at all if you don't plan on sticking it out

Awesome, thanks for letting us all know how we should be supporting our team.

I must confess to having left early once, I guess I should hand my membership back. The shame 🥺
Personally wouldn't be admitting to that

There is a reason everyone makes fun of people who leave early, its the biggest insult you can cop as a fan

Totally different tackling mechanisms. Footy players are trying to stop the handball and bring the player down. NFL players are trying to knock the shit of each other, you cannot exactly wrap your arms around most of those guys..

I agree in the fact that footy players should just whammo the centre/hips, the oppo is going to have a hard time handballing or kicking when they are eating dirt..

Or Wagner. He played mid for Peel last week and spent time on a wing in match sims over the preseason. Narkle might not be sub. Its just the West thinking he will be.
Im tipping Wagner's sub and if comes on without injuries he'll be playing wing and not half back. Freddy finished last week on the wing in the last quarter. Im tipping he also spend more time midfield wtth Johnson spending more time onball. Im also predicting Bruce spends time onball for the first time in his afl season career. Combination of Johnson less on the wing and Young less forward spending more time onball and short stints for Reid to cover for O'Meara's rotation onball. Wagner to come on for either Dudley, Macdonald or Worner in the last with Cyclone to go in the ruck to replace Darcy in the last if Macdonald is subbed. Having a super quick forward line in the last could be a major advantage. We can then lave Bolton as our deepest forward only when Cyclone's rucking.

Nah its pissweak to leave the footy early if your team is playing

Leaving the game because your team is losing is weak as piss, end of.

I leave early if we are winning so I get a head start on the rush to the train

Does that pass the pub test?

Edit - I am still listening to the game on my wireless headset whilst walking to the train.

Nah. You don’t have anything better to do. Stick fat or don’t show.
