All those expectations in the preseason have vanished without a trace, I don't think I have the optimism left to expect anything better that 10 goal trouncing. But alas, I will sit on the couch in my Suns shirt and hat, and wave that little yellow flag when we kick a goal, while I offer up excuses to my daughter as to why we suck again. Good times.

Yes, this could get very depressing. This time, they cant blame the loss of Ablett. We have a team of POTENTIAL superstars. If they lose, its because they are GUTLESS POTENTIAL superstars.....

Could even get a compo pick like Melbourne did
Well I 100% agree with Rockets statement he said after the match on Saturday "We are building this club to finish 1st 2nd or 3rd not 6th, 7th or 8th". Now if that means we go backwards this year in the win-loss column so be it. you need to get more top end talent in the club and to fix our work rate. A very bad season wont upset me because then we have another high draft pick and of coarse we are the new baby so the AFL will give us a compo pick. Just look at geelong 2006 they were in the same boat had a shocker of a year got the number 7 draft pick and there was a lot of finger pointing about work rate. that draft they picked up Selwood (maybe the greatest draft pick ever) there bodies and there work rate catch up to there ability and all of sudden they were the greatest team anyone had ever seen. If they never had that bad 2006 and finished middle of the road or higher they would of never picked up Selwood and the Famous circle of truth might not of ever happened because they were nearly there.

Yep
My son was 3yo when we went to the first practice match at Southport against Sydney
He kept on yelling out "Go Daniel Harris", because we loved him, and Daniel turned around at a throw in and smiled at him
Now he's 8yo and as usual he was there in his full Suns gear on Saturday night
He turned to me at half-time and said
"Dad, why are we still so bad?I thought we were supposed to be getting better?"
Tough times

We won't be playing finals this year... And that's fine. I still don't believe our list has stepped it up yet- we need a few to break out and become genuine A grade players. This is the year.

Thank god we have Nick Malceski out there.

Poor Mal
He didn't realise what he was getting into did he?
Coming from one of the AFL's most structured and functional defences to The Suns starring Maysie Rory T and Big Brough
One of my major beefs over the past 5 years is the fact our mids don't seem to think they have to work into defence!!!!
You look at teams like Sydney and Hawthorn and ALL their mids work back and help out
Is it sacreligious to say that GAJ is as guilty as any of them in this regard?
I'm hoping it's something Rocket will address
People calling for Mal to be dropped?
Laughable

Malceski is not innocent of making amateur mistakes. Getting his kicks smothered, kicking out on the full, miskicking, missing the mark, missing the tackle. He's quite honestly not the same player as he was last year - probably due to the others players and the lack of synergy.

Mal was still probably our strongest defender for the past two weeks (although Saad may just sneak in front), but his performance has been laughable.

It's all about the pressure the opposition can exert on you, and that's unfortunately symptomatic of the effort level from the whole team's perspective

I just don't think we can afford to drop our most experienced player and AA defender.

The team as a whole have been comically bad the last two weeks, but I think we can turn it around.

Agreed, and as I said in one of the other threads, while the front half of this season may become a bit of a horror show I'm thinking the back half could see some real improvement and some players really start to motor

So Sunny let's put the emoing to one side
Are you expecting a win this weekend in Geelong?
If not...what would be an acceptable loss?
We'll lose. But how we lose is what I deem to be acceptable. If I see the midfield pressure and tackle, I'll be happy. Baby steps.

I wonder if we'll upgrade Raines to start running with guys like Selwood
We're going to have to start limiting damage at one end while renewing structures at the other

I think we just need to slow it down a bit, get and hold some possession and build the speed and confidence from there. You cant always play on at all costs, it just results in turnovers. Although id still like Saad to play on at all costs because its awesome to watch!

Some changes id consider:

Matera > Sexton
Matt Shaw > Ablett
Garlett > Miller (sub) Possibly drop Miller for Aaron Hall
Gorringe > Day
Mckenzie > Harbrow

Im glad Sexton is out, he is a good size has good speed but just isn't a pure footballer. Id like to see Matera back in and playing a bit higher up the ground, yeah he likes the cheap ones over the back but he has great vision and is calm with the ball in hand and actually thinks before he kicks it.

Id also swap Miller and Garlett. Garlett looks evasive and a bit more comfortable with the speed of the game and can still provide the pressure acts. Id possibly even bring in A. Hall for Miller. Hall has good 2's form, can kick a goal and create some good passages of play( as well as some horrendous ones) and is more capable of finding the footy more. He can be ok defensively too if he feels like it.

Gorringe in for Day (under 10 disposals in 2 games) as well, They are both soft but Gorringe has the better form and fitness and we need a tall swing man in there still.
