Pretty sure he doesn't qualify because he's played too many games already. Isn't the criteria under 21, and less than 7 AFL games at the start of the year?
He played 9 last year, and 6 this year?

did everything I think you'd expect from a crumbing small forward coming out of the NEAFL
Where did this performance come from? As some hawks supporting bloke sitting behind me so eloquently put it: "Where the f*** did this come from? This c***'s playing like f*ing Carey in his prime!".

As stated above, he played most (if not all) of his junior career as a key forward. This includes the U18 champs where he kicked plenty of goals. So he's always had that skillset.
However, I think with the introduction of Day, Lynch and Dixon, he's just been starved for opportunity in the forward line and thus been forced to play as a key defender. In 2011 he played this role with some success, though I was never a big fan of him. He also played some stints up forward, but never had a decent result.
In 2012 he came out like a raging bull, and shed plenty of the puppy-fat. In the NAB Cup, playing as a KPD, he absolutely destroyed Mitch Brown. Video below!
But he continued to get injuries and never really got a big run at it. He's played in the 2s level pretty much as the General of our defence, and when playing in the seniors, played the KPD spot.
The Hawthorn game I think was the first time he played forward in 2012. Looks like that he's fit again after overcoming some injuries, though from what Bluey said probably not up to full fitness quite yet. Hence why he was played forward and not in defence, where it's constantly coming into our 50.
I'm not a huge fan of him in defence, but there's certainly plenty to like about him playing forward. Certainly has the mongrel about him too. Also looks like he's gained some good experience of when to lead and when to not, having played on guys like Pods etc.
Another pre-season into him to finally get rid of all the puppy fat, and if he keeps pumping out performances like that, and he could be a real weapon for us.
Maysie has way more awareness than either Tom Lynch or Sam Day

Yeah, some questionable umpiring decisions this game.
May has come out of the sky like a bolt of lightning. A leading forward?! Never seen that since Bock went.
If may can do it at 20, why can't Lynch and Day?
Do they need more games down back to teach them the lessons that May has obviously learned?

May is a bigger unit at 100kg, so can take a contested grab a bit better. But I'd also say it's extremely likely that May has been brought up to speed quicker than Lynch and Day because he's had experience playing on some of the best forwards in the competition. He himself said that he just remembered what he hated forwards doing to him, and did it to the defenders.
With that said, May has had one good game as a forward. That doesn't make him suddenly better than Day and Lynch, who have both played the majority of the year and likely have more niggles/sore spots than Maysie. Let's see if he can back it up in these last two games, and then we'll see if we have a force on our hands.
Credit to him though. He was challenged by the Coaches and really stood up.

welcome to our world where the "odd free-kick decision" won't matter because apparently no-one expects us to win anyway, and coming from the Gold Coast we probably don't even know the rules.
The 50m to Drew Petrie up here at Metricon against Matty Warnock when we were pushing for the win that took Drew from the wing to the forward pocket still burns my guts
Yeah, I'm going to sound like a bit of a complainer but we more often than not get the rough side of the umpiring I feel. Decisions that should be there for us that aren't called, and stuff like that where the umpire helps the other team out, it is rather frustrating, and doesn't help since we are a low drawing team, we probably get all the trainee umpires also...
