Changes v the Pies

Butler is confirm out I think.
So probally no changes although it looks like Duggan could come in for Hutch.

Our defence will hold up against the Pies.
We have won 11 out of our last 12 at Etihad and they have two less dangerous mids from last time we played (Beams and Adam's) and no run out of 50 from Harry O.

I hope so. Given our defense has been a huge part of our success so far I think playing on the shorter ground will be good. Much less open space to kick to over the 'web'. Hopefully we won't see Collingwood scythe through it as easily as Adelaide were able to at times.

Hill still kicked 2 goals last week so i am happy to keep him in. Unless Karps or Newman are dominating and demanding a spot i would leave Hill in.

Hill kicking a couple of goals a week isn't what he should be measured on, for he can get joe the goose type goals or snag a goal or two once the floodgates have opened. Such goals are next to meaningless. Hill should be measured on his defensive output more than anything, and at the moment it's not up to scratch. Hill is very capable in this regard, but it seems he's become too comfortable in the side and has reverted to his lazy ways yet again. Hill needs a kick up the arse.

Because we haven't played too many sides with very tall forward lines.
I think the game against Richmond showed that our defence is more than capable (most of their goals came from Dusty?), and Richmond's 3 big blokes were in much better form than the Pies' 3.

Hurn, Wellingham and particularly Sheppard have shown that they can give away 2-3 inches and still keep their man under control. To a large degree, the size discrepancy doesn't matter because we avoid playing a man on man defence. McGovern particularly but also Sheppard are adept at zoning off so that we rarely see the one on one contests.

Hopefully all this is moot on Saturday by us just absolutely killing the Pies in the middle.

I think Hill is a better player when he's roaming the forward half and looking to deliver to the forwards. He seems greedy for goals the last few weeks, must be feeling some pressures to kick goals that is affecting his game. There was an instance when he marked just inside 50 and cripps was free 30 metres out but decided to take a shot from 50. He's not a guy with a big kick so I didn't even think he would even make the distance. He should have pass that ball.

With Butler pretty much confirmed as an out I'd like to see us bring in a defender to counter Collingwood's smaller forwards.

Because of this I'd like to see Nelson IN & Hutchings OUT but I'm understanding of the fact that it's a big game to throw Nelson into after a few games in the 2's. Barrass another option but for a debutant it's an even bigger stage.

The temptation would be to play Duggan after a break last week but I'd be happy with him having a run at East Perth as well.

Riewoldt, Vickery and Griffiths are not quite the same as Franklin, Tippett and Reid/Goodes or Roughead, Hale and Gunston/McEvoy though, plus Richmond lost the game due to awful kicking, not because we were able to defend well.

I know what you mean, but relying on Sheppard to beat a tall (because 'if it ain't broke don't fix it') is not a great strategy if we were in a final and Hawthorn/Sydney decided to play extra tall to stretch us.

We should be at least blooding Barrass in the event that this does happen later on

My comments are primarily directed at this week but I agree Swans and Hawks present a different kettle of fish. I don't think we lost the game against Richmond because they kicked poorly. They kicked 10.10 which isn't horrible. They only had 8 marks inside 50, maybe 6-7 of those to their talls (I know Deledio snagged one), so I reckon our blokes defended well.

We have developed a cohesive defensive unit, one which doesn't start from a default position of "they have X big blokes, so we need X big blokes", and messing with that might mean that a big bloke kicks 2-3 goals less but we could concede a whole lot more as a result of throwing other aspects of the defence out of whack. We've all seen Healy's "Weagles Web" footage. That's not something I'd be confident Barrass can come in and pick up straight off the bat.

I agree he needs to be blooded, but better players than him have waited longer for an opportunity.

Going in unchanged according to Simmo.

Unless he switches with Scooter I think Hutch would have to be the sub, again

I doubt Scooter would be sub again. If they're playing him into form in the AFL, dropping him to sub again would make his confidence an issue.

True that.

Just a bit worried that Hutching's last three weeks will be emergency, sub, sub. Means not much game time, and that's on the back of an interrupted pre season.

DANGER DANGER. Got a bad feeling that Elliott, Blair, Fasolo, Swan etc. will be to hard for our small and mid size defenders to counter. Team defence would have to do it

Elliot may miss - but he'll most likely play imo

COLLINGWOOD small forward Jamie Elliott was a notable absentee from Magpies’ training this morning.

Elliott did not join his teammates on the track for their main session ahead of Saturday’s clash against West Coast at Etihad Stadium.

The Herald Sun is still awaiting an answer from the Magpies on the reasons behind Elliott’s absence.

Will be a big win for us if Elliott is out.

Duggan needs a couple of weeks at WAFL level to implement some of the things he's learnt playing in the 1's whilst having more time to do so and develop his game. Being able to do that and get onto a few more kicks will also help bring his confidence back to peak levels and hopefully have him firing for later on in the season.

I know that we've been ripped up by small forwards in recent years, but when has it happened this year? Betts has been on fire all season and we kept him to 2 goals last week, with one of those being indefensible.
