Its not always about maximum coin. Its about quality of life for your family and also team success too. Its not like its a shit job and we aren't offering minimun wage either. Close to a million a year is a lot of money especially for playing football. Gaff may be pulled by family/friends and if that's the case I could understand. Lets hope the friends he has made here are enough to keep him around.

Where Masten plays.
Wing/HFF? I thought your argument for Masten is that he covers a lot of ground? But any comparison has to be based on one particular part of the field?

Link-up play by its nature occurs in different parts of the ground. It's not enough for Masten to do it well in one part. We've got enough guys who do it well enough that Masten can't get by on doing that and nothing else.

Cripps, Lecca, Rioli? HFF's - nah wouldn't have thought so from what I've seen of Lecca & Cripps. Rioli - maybe but not right now.

Jetta - Maybe, however didn't set the world on fire when given that opportunity.

Hurn? Taking him away from where does most damage? Really? And who replaces him in the HB line?

Cole - Maybe, not ready yet. But perhaps a likely candidate.

Duggan - I could conceded this one.

Sheppard. No mate.

Waterman...I'm not sold.

Yeo - as a linkman? Don't you want him at the coalface?
It is a collective effort that requires players to chip in everywhere from the D50 to F50. The point is that we have enough guys who can carry this burden that Masten can't just be a link-up specialist in one area who brings little else to the table. He might be worth his spot currently, but I'm not convinced he'd be in our best 22.

Let me be clear, I thought Masten was cooked. Well cooked.

I was wrong. I can admit it. Yeah hes made a few clangers, and yep I rip into him. But he's adding something this season. H's been allowed to play to his strengths and its working well thus far.

Looking forward to see how he goes in the next fortnight when the pressure goes up. I might be well with you in advocating his removal. :)
He might not be cooked. But nor should he be guaranteed a spot in the best 22 just because he covers a lot of territory. If you picked our best 22, he'd be one of the last 2-3 guys picked, if at all.

You guys are seriously kidding yourselves if you think Cripps is any chance of getting dropped. Has had the most forward 50 tackles in the AFL and is third in the comp for pressure acts. Problem is he doesn't do the pretty things that get noticed. Would be in the top 10 in our B and F right now. Ah Chee or Waterman would be the decision but its irrelevant because Ryan is 6 weeks away
Yeah, you're probably right about Cripps. I was just framing it as those are the guys basically vying the same spots.

Both gone I reckon. We offer Gov 800k, another club offers 1.2m over 5 years , that's an extra 2m. what would you do ? Heap of vic clubs lining up For Gaff as well. Will be offered big coin.
That's cool, we're gonna need all that salary cap room to fit Cole in within a couple of years.

Mutimer the only emergency not playing WAFL today fyi. Think because they know what he can do already at that level. Don't see him coming in less its a pre-game injury.

I don't think it's just covering a lot of ground, it's doing it more at pace. He was 4kgs heavier last year at the coaches request and he still covered kms but basically jogged everywhere.

From what I see, Cripps could play the role but is already in a very demanding role as a repeat sprinter from the forward flank. Duggan is supposed to have a pretty big tank, but he's playing well where he is and one of his biggest knocks is his inability to find the ball, so he may not be suited to the role.

Jetta is more valuable in the backline as a second avenue out of defence, it means the players are looking for him and he's better off for it. Worst case scenario he is tagged and Hurn plays a blinder.

I have no qualms with someone taking Masten's spot but I think they need to prove their running ability and football smarts. Having a balanced team where everyone has different strengths and weaknesses has served us very well, rather than the focus of everyone being flexible and a Jack-of-all-trades, make them the masters of their own trade.

Players like Gaff and Shuey are the exceptions to the rule. Venables hopefully will be as well once he gets his body right and builds fitness.

Gov still sore I reckon.
Must be if
Shuey and arguably Ryan the only automatic best 22 inclusions missing from that side

Hutchings the most likely to come out for Shuey but **** knows who comes out for Ryan - probably a choice between waterman and Cripps

I'd pick Waterman in the team over Cripps - will get better as time goes on - JW has good work ethics for a 19 yr old

I think one of the big reasons we have played so well this year is simmo sticking to picking the team based on roles.

For that reason i cant see masten being displaced unless someone is banging the door down to play wing.

As has been said shuey and ryan are probably our only 2 automatic ins that are out.

Shuey > hutchings and ryan > waterman imo, though waterman in particular would be stiff.

If venables comes back strong in the second half of the year him and ah chee are fighting for that last mid-fwd spot.

Good postion to be in at the moment

Shuey for hutchings n Ryan for cole, as long as Jetta is fit to play

Yes, I understand that. But 2 million dollars in 5 years ? So effectively you are throwing 2 million dollars in the bin to stay with your family/friends ? Ever heard about making sacrifices to set your family up ? You know, like fly in fly out workers often do ? Except in football you get to take your family with you . I'd go the coin everyday.

Id retain Cripps ahead of Masten. More pace, can tackle and kick goals.

You can rotate Cripps, Ryan and Waterman off a wing.

Yeah and look how unhappy most of them are with mental illness. Gov already has a business so with 5 million plus a possibility of a media degree in the future he is alreasy set up.

I'm imagining Gov owns a bakery. Is this accurate?

It's a tough one, I'd probably stick with Gaffy. At the start of the season I would have gone the other way but given Gaff's current form and durability I think we can cover for Guv better.
I was all for getting rid of Gaff. But I eat humble pie, he has been brilliant this season, whilst Gov has definitely dropped off a little. Wonder what is going on with Gov to be honest ? Think the contract talk, or his decision is affecting him .

So you would throw 2 million in the bin ? That is bad management, no matter how you look at it.

Mate I'm currently earning about 30k a year and I'm the most content I've been in my whole life. The sooner people realise money isn't the be all and end all the better off they will be.

How can anyone live these days on 30g ?

Isn't that like double what the dole or whatever the study allowance is? I'd suggest a lot of people would quite happily live on 30k a year.

It's not having what you want that makes you happy it's wanting what you have.

So at one stage money was the be all and end all to allow you to have the lifestyle you have now ?
I havent earnt anywhere near what Gov has. I've just been smart with what I have earnt and prioritised things. I'm not materialistic so it helps.

The point I'm making is its fine to want to be financially secure but there is a point where the extra money means little. 800k a year or whatever we offer Gov or Gaff is a lot of money. That's more than 1st division lotto most weeks. Whether it's 5 million or 7 million over the rest of their career is not going to mean a great deal at the end of the day.
