You're probably right. But in a way this is more frustrating than the dark days. In the dark days we were just crap and there wasn't much we could do about it. Now it feels like we could actually be good if we weren't actively working against ourselves.

I whinged about selections in 2012 too, but back then the likes of Matt Thomas and Darren Pfeiffer were getting picked because we had nothing coming through to replace them. Right now we have Joe Atley coming off of 31 touches, we have Dougal Howard coming off of 8(!) goals, we have Jesse Palmer coming off of a string of BOG or thereabouts performance, we have Brett Eddy leading the Ken Farmer medal, we have Angus Monfries getting 25 & 2 every week, we have Dan Houston who I still don't understand why he was ever dropped in the first place. Nah let's try Jake Neade again lol

....we have made some serious improvements in our game style but still lack something. Things like preparing for the opposition and also gameday tactics, as in responding to what is happening on the field when things go wrong.

You never want a player to fail, but I really wish that Young didn't have a good game on the weekend. I really like what Young can bring to the table, but he was dropped for a reason. Need to play a few more like that before you get the call up. If Ken had any marbles left, he's well and truly lost them by now.

Yep. We can't use excuses like under an resourced footy department, injuries or suspensions. The coaches and players have everything at their fingertips. Yet we are under performing still.

If we seriously bring in Jake Neade while leaving the likes of Howard, Houston, Atley and Palmer in the SANFL I may not even bother going.

I hit maximum melting point after we conceeded 5 straight goals in the 2nd Qtr on Satdy night. I turned off the TV and Big footy, but for the same stupid reason that I turned the TV back on, we'll all be there again Saturday. Because we love this club no matter what. Sometimes all we can do is hope Hinkley is right and we are all wrong otherwise we're well and truly entrenched on the path to mediocrity.

as much as i woudl like to see Howard i do think he would be lucky to run out a game at AFL level right at the moment with his knee & fitness levels. his first half would be worth watching, happy to wait another month at SANFL

dont read too much into 8 goals against westies, Damon White would have kicked 10 if he were playing, dont worry the club rates him, thats why he was one of the few Maggies players to be taken on the China trip

That's the thing, though. If he were good enough to go along to China as an emergency, why does he need a few extra weeks now?

The biggest surprise is that anyone is surprised. This group has a big enough sample size to demonstrate the results they are capable of. For me they are delivering exactly as expected.

I'm really excited about some of the talent we have acquired over the last 3 years. Just can't wait to see it in the 1's...

The sooner we move on from this playing group the better. Have a fire sale, let Bassett coach us and let's see this Magpies side win an AFL flag in 3 year's time.

I can't understand why Kern can't just respond with something along the lines of, he/they will come under consideration, when asked about specific players, even if he has no intention of selecting them.

Telegraphing to the opposition any player he has ruled out 4 days before the game, doesn't make a lot of sense.
How about keeping them guessing for a little while longer Kern.

It's interesting to me that they've backed in SPP to play every game for the year but Atley and Drew haven't had a look in yet.

I actually don't have a problem with Ken wanting to see Howard back up his performance as a forward against an actual football this week. He's seen AFL action before so we know Ken has faith that he can compete at that level. And it also comes back to the fact of who do you drop for him? You can't just make him an in for Ah Chee/Toumpas. The most likely course is that one of the KPDs are out and Trengove goes back with Howard forward but apart from Hombsch's absolute 'mare last week they've been in very good form.

My personal preference would also be that Young backs the performance up too, but he's got more credits in the bank than Howard and is also a far more fitting replacement for Ah Chee.

Atley would be very stiff to miss selection this week regardless so I can at least agree with melts if he's not selected again.
