Unofficial Preview Changes vs GWS

Membrey is used to these marvel games when he was a saint, I'd be leaving him in and back him to use some or his nouse to hit the scoreboard.
Last chance for our big 3 to show something against a undermanned giants defence, otherwise all West needs to do is get through the vfl game and he will replace one of them for the next month.

GWS have this imagination that they are rivals with us and this game means something more than just the 4 points, so they'll come out strong, we need to weather the storm early and play it on our terms.

Annoying that they might get Daniels,Bedford and Cadman back, hopefully under done...but reassuring knowing Howey and Moore are likely ins for us.

I understand - but you’re dropping Mcstay/Membrey who are part of the preferred fwd setup after only 2 weeks.
If they get dropped, we'll have a different preferred fwd set up. Preferred team is very rarely fixed.

so GWS will be missing both Taylor AND Buckley this week. Perfect time to bring in West IMO
I totally agree. It is about time that we take a punt with youth & not just for 1 game but at least 3 to 4 games. I just hope that some of the young guys such as the groups that we drafted in the 2024 & the 2025 National Drafts, respectively, play well in the VFL game against GWS on Friday afternoon. OK. I really want to see some pressure from underneath at the VFL level in terms of the newer & younger recruits demanding selection in the AFL team. Regardless, the senior team need to make a statement on Friday night at Marvel. OK. Goodnight & good luck.

I think Bedford will play, but Cadman and Daniels, they don't sound overly confident in those two playing...

Go and look at McStay's stats for his last 6 or 7 games last year, in fact he played 18 games for 19 goals.
I look at McStay’s 23 PF performance- that’s the potential that requires continuing to persist with him. Injury has cursed his last 2 seasons, but he’s lost no athleticism since, hence my belief he can get back to that form.

You have to start somewhere. If 2 weeks is the benchmark before making changes to any setup, then such knee jerk management, means we are in real trouble.

There are players dropped every week right throughout the AFL and always has been. It's really not a big deal if one week you think Membrey is likely to perform better but the next week you think it's West ...or whichever players are coming in and out of the team. It's not necessarily a set up change, but when it is that can be do with wanting a set up change due to opponent or something you didn't like about the previous set up they tried.

he was clunking marks back then. He was also good in the QF against Melbourne with Bobby crumbing

I agree with your generalization but fwd structure is an exception - most teams have a preferred structure that remains fixed, barring injury. What would our fwd structure look like if we had Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Walker - I’m tipping they’d be first on the team sheet every week.

They get picked every week because they're good players, but they're not the structure. Their borderline players come in and out of the team - like every teams does. The structure is the roles and not the individual players.

I think we’re getting into semantics - if Walker, Thilthorpe and Fogarty don’t represent a fwd structure ( playing specific roles) then - fwd structure doesn’t exist in AFL.

I agree about borderline players.

So you have faith that if he keeps getting picked he will eventually return to his 2023 form.
Is this a fair assessment?

I don't get it. Our KPFs are clearly borderline players. If you swap one in and one out it's no more of a structural change than replacing Allan with a different borderline player on the wing.

Dan only had 5 possessions in that prelim (didn't play a full game). He's a strong contested mark. If he clunks and converts a couple it's a good game if not it's a bad game as in this current role he doesn't do much at all outside of the big clunks. He'll continue to have the odd good game and a lot of bad games.

Your conclusion on “ borderline players” is based on 2 games - how do they move from borderline to more substantial individual contributors or as a group, without adequate exposure in the seniors? The fwd setup/structure is critical for every team ( ie IMO your example of Allan doesn’t apply) - patience is needed to develop the right mix.

On what basis do you believe he’s incapable of returning to that form?
You didn't answer my question but I'm not saying it's impossible for him to return to 2023 form, just that we can't afford to keep picking him until he does show some return to form which so far he has not.
Not going on 2 games but also last year's form which was pretty ordinary.

No it's not. I think they're borderline players as I don't think they'd get a regular senior game for a lot of teams. Membrey has had a great career, but he's now bloody slow and was delisted two off seasons ago. McStay has had a good career too, but has always just had role player production and has had a long stretch of below par performance. And Buller is a 24 year old relative unknown with 11 games to his name - borderline is probably a compliment at this stage of his career.

I said earlier I don’t think he’s lost his athleticism, and so I believe he can get back to that form. Maybe you missed that answer to your question.
He made some dumb decisions but also took some nice marks against Adel.
The dumb decisions and therefore lost opportunities to score are condemning his contribution.
If he’d capitalized on those opportunities I doubt we’d be having this conversation.

So when all said and done, dumb decisions can be fixed.

You're entitled to your opinion, as I am to mine.
Am going to leave it at that.
