Simmo presser:

- Goalkicking was the only thing not going our way in first half. Disappointing but it happens. Put it down to aberration.
- Players responded well in second half.
- The game was played in our half a fair bit - thought the Geelong bigs going down hurt them - while we have matured, but we probably had a bit of a gift there.
- We had to be mindful of the Geelong rebound from our half. Overall our defenders did very well - if rebound was the only thing they had, we'll take that.
- We were forced wide for most of the day - they took the corridor off us - we never felt 100% comfortable.
- [Asked about response to bad goalkicking] - It's frustrating, but I've been more frustrated in the past. We were doing most things right. We didn't make the most of our momentum is all.
- We reflected on last year at the half - we missed opportunities last year.
- A good performance against quality opposition - but they were impeded by the rotations and the conditions of the day.
- We were happy overall on all the benchmarks we look at.
- [Asked re: second half dominance this season] - We have belief in what we're doing right now, and we have strong fitness (but no better than others). It's really a confidence thing.
- [Asked re NN's game] - He's played better games while I've been with him, but it was very good. They lost two of their rucks though, so mindful of context. That mark was special - would be good if people "shut up" about his taking marks. He's always contributing with his contested ball and clearances.
- [Asked again about the mark] - Was a good mark, he "probably had a good look at City Beach for a while there", but it was the conversion that mattered to me.
- We're working on NN's movement around the ground - he's only just realising the extent of the damage he can do. Cats tried to take the rucks forward and out of position, but it went well.
- He played well but I've seen him play well before. Sinclair and the midfielders did very well.
- Nick has had a good preseason, his first in a while - he's mature in the body and having a good season.
- We didn't give Brant a specific role - looking forward to see him continue to grow.
- [Asked if the goalposts were rotated during the week] - "Are you serious?" (good spirits)
- [Asked what WCE can achieve] - Our goal was to improve from last year. We've lost soldiers but so has everyone else. Our goal was to improve. We finished 9th last year - so we want finals this year, and a brand that can stand up in bigger games. Roos in Tassie will be a massive test.
- Way too early to talk about finals really.
- [Asked re Runner's 50th metre penalty] - Simmo didn't know who it was.
- [Asked who makes the call about positioning of the rucks on game day] - Opposition ruckmen will try different ways to minimise our rucks impact. It's not a new move that they've come up with - just a tactic available to opposition clubs. We scout these things and prepare for it.

Ellis is definitely in the best 22 if healthy. I don't know who to drop, but you might as well bring him in if he's healthy. Get as much as you can out of him before his next pulled hamstring or calf strain.

i cant wait til we got sheed, yeo, darling and maybe even ellis back into this side

Yeo in and a rest for Duggan.

Colledge for a full run and Bennell might get to keep the dogs from the door for a week in the green vest.

Not keen on Sheed being rushed back in at all. Happy to see him back around the bye and ready to fire.

In: Rosa, Darling, Sheed, Yeo, Ellis.
Out: ?????????????????

McInnes was very poor today, but I've been a fan in general of what he's brought. Worth a try bringing in Lycett as a permanent forward, or does that give everyone flashbacks to the "three rucks debacle"?
Why the **** would you even want to try that? Our forward line is currently the best in the league. Darling for McInnes is the only thing that needs to happen in our forward half.

Not sure Rosa and Ellis are best 22 anymore, good depth and I'm sure they'll play some decent games for us again but if everyone's fit I think they've been overtaken.

Colledge > Yeo
Bennell > Sheed
McInnes > Darling (when fit)
Duggan (spot is his own at the moment) > Rosa (form dependent)
Nelson (spot is his own at the moment) > Ellis (form dependent)
Sinclair (spot is his own at the moment) > Lycett (form dependent)

FB: Butler Schofield Hurn
HB: Sheppard McGovern Wellingham
C: Gaff Priddis Yeo
HF: LeCras Darling Masten
FF: Cripps Kennedy Hill
RR: Naitanui Shuey Selwood
I/C: Nelson Sheed Sinclair
S: Duggan

Gets even harder next year when Mackenzie and Brown are back. Schofield the unlucky one to miss? Does Brown come in and we send McGovern up the ground displacing Sinclair?

I know Simmo is trying to stand up for his players, but the unavoidable fact is that NicNat simply doesn't hold enough of his marking opportunities inside 50. If anything, he's probably regressed in that department since 2011-12. Instead of going on the defensive, he should have said something more constructive like "the challenge for Nic is to do that on a more regular basis".

Problem with dropping Bennell is that we're dropping him for a midfielder, not for a defender. It changes the way the team sets the midfield up a bit.

I'm happy for the forward line to remain as is until Darling is fit enough to play the role.

If Duggan needs a rest bring in one of Rosa or Ellis.

Bennell was better this week than last and may be needed against Thomas though nelson could also perform that role.

Yeo straight back in, colledge the unlucky out.

No rush to bring injuries players back in if we are winning comfortably. Sheed may have to earn his spot, which is a nice challange to have.
