It's not particularly egregious and was more just an observation - it just annoys me that Australian sporting commentators simply refuse to call a player by his first name as it is stated - they always adding/subtracting/modifying letters/sounds etc.?

I still can't work out "Davey" Warner - why is it so hard to call him "David"? Mitchell Johnson's first name is "Mitchell" - it's really not that difficult to pronounce and a supposedly professional and impartial commentator really should refer to a player by his correct first and last names.

I suspect that the reason they do not is because they like coming across as being "mates" with the players they are commentating. To me it comes across as unprofessional.

It's the same in the AFL with Buddy Franklin etc.

Who really cares?

I\'ve been listening to TMS on the BBC. I like Aggers, Vaughan and Vic Marks. They can be quite amusing amongst all the angst and they do remain professional.

Boycs loses it a bit, but he can be very funny in his rants.

This commentators are far too matey, try to wind each other up too much and love to talk too much shit about each other and themselves. Warne, Healy, Slater, Nicholas can all piss off, w***ers the lot of em. Leave Michael Vaughan, Tubs and Chappelli on all day I reckon, not that they're the best going round but at least they talk about the cricket and don't act like children.

did ya see them take the piss out of warnes twitter black and white pic? then had photos of all the other knobs in the box doing gay arse duck face shit.

cringeworthy.

thing is, NBA commentary teams (the tnt crew) give each other shit all the time, but dey funny.

That was happening when I was writing that post before, yeah maybe their sense of humour is just too "zany" for me, or they're w***ers, either is possible.

Oh and I've also had enough of them showing highlights of Warne's career and getting him to comment on it, not required.

Can anyone honestly say that they enjoy the commentary by the morons who provide it? The main thing that annoys me about the commentators and particularly Chappell, is his incessant dribble when describing something that has just happened as if the viewing audience is not only blind but have no understanding of the game whatsoever.
Only Channel 9 would employ these idiots.

like tom moody. no fuss, and done well when he's commentated before. mind you any new-ish blood is going to look gold amongst some of the mainstays.

thought i heard a chappell anecdote that i hadn't heard before the other day.

nicholas + slaters rom rom key was absolutely cringeworthy. i actually felt pity for the both of them.

id just like to advise the 3aw coverage is interesting. chappelli, flem and bruce eva. chappelli is good.

eva seems rushed when commentating the delivery
Ha ha. I reckon he puts that on, coz it's his way of trying to build excitement, but it just sounds like he's busting for a shit and is gunna bolt to the dunny as soon as the over's over. :D

I'm pretty sure they're going to 6PR, but does anyone know if they're going to the other states?

That's their job.

They are told to appeal to the person watching who knows the least about cricket.

Surely it's quality not quantity though? Listen to Healy when commentating, he'll let you know all sorts of things like the batsman is on 31 (it's on the screen), the team score and wickets (it's on the screen) and what colour the baggy green is (it's on the screen).

I don't know whether it had been cause I'd just been watching ch 9, but O'Keefe's commentary with whoever it was on ABC during our first wicket partnership on Sunday was perfect. Skull can be a clown but he knows his cricket back to front and knows when to play either role, and the other guy (not a regular, don't know who he was) was the perfect foil, describing each ball concisely and then setting up Skull for more analysis.

Don't forget the use of nicknames amongst themselves eg., Tubs, Slats, Heals, Bumble and so on. Absolutely childish.
Nicknames are an Australian pastime, and it suits our overall laziness and disdain for the English language. Cricket would be very dour if they had to pronounce every name perfectly correct.
