It's not particularly egregious and was more just an observation - it just annoys me that Australian sporting commentators simply refuse to call a player by his first name as it is stated - they always adding/subtracting/modifying letters/sounds etc.?
I still can't work out "Davey" Warner - why is it so hard to call him "David"? Mitchell Johnson's first name is "Mitchell" - it's really not that difficult to pronounce and a supposedly professional and impartial commentator really should refer to a player by his correct first and last names.
I suspect that the reason they do not is because they like coming across as being "mates" with the players they are commentating. To me it comes across as unprofessional.
It's the same in the AFL with Buddy Franklin etc.
Who really cares?
