Who think there should be more chants in AFL Game like the Barmy Army and Victory Fans?

AFLs not like soccer or cricket where there are long periods where nothing happens, the chants aren't needed. You're too caught up in the action.

Exactly.

Only chant that I hear often is "BULLSH*******" when the ump has made a rough call.

Fans don't chant at aussie rules games! Just like aussie fans don't sing at the cricket. I sat with the Barmy Army yesterday and the rock! Even though I'm aussie I love the way they took the pisss out of the aussie fans. There has been some token efforts from Collingwood fans, but nothing compared to the Victory.

I agree aussie rules has alot of action, but what about 1/2 time etc.

I reckon the atmosphere at most aussie rules games is fairly ********e, but perhaps the game is too packed with action. I HATE that wossy "insert teams name clap clap clap" cringe factor of 1000%.

No chanting.

theres no time in AFL games......the only reason chanting is popular in soccar is because its the most boring game on earth...ours is the least boring.

the barmy army are nothing but a bunch of middle aged pommies with nothing better to spend thier money on than a trip to Oz to watch england lose at another sport.....

I've been in the middle of those chants and they work in soccer only because there are real breaks in the game.

In football no chance.

When I was little I remember going to the big games between the Blues and Pies and the cheersquads used to have these great little songs or chants that they would abuse the other team with which was very entertaining!!!

I remember as kids we would all giggle when they had a swear word in it, which between those two teams was A LOT!!!

Victory fans carn't chant. If you want to listen to good chants go listen to the Barmy Army or go to a South Melbourne Soccer match and listen to our boys.

Victory fans are mostly South Melbourne fans anyway

There are some clubs that have smallish groups who belt out a few pre rehearsed chants, I know Hawthorn has one - sounds ok but probably wouldn't be heard beyond 50m.

Oh pleeeease not another Aussie rules vs soccer thread!

(or Victory vs. South Melbourne thread)

Chanting has developed mainly in the British Isles with Association Football because there has always been a tradition in singing and chanting in those cultures.

Nothing to do with Association Football being 'boring' etc. Chanting is just not part of the Australian sporting culture. There is no much scoring in Rugby matches and I don't think there much chanting there either.

The way the Australian Football fan support a team is personal. Shouting things like 'get off him!' 'In the back!' 'You're weak as piss (insert players name) ' are shouted at the player/umpire but with the knowledge that it will never be heard by them anyway. If anything they are ways that the supporter extends the rivalry between his team to the outer so that opposition fans can hear. So that barracking is often done towards the opposition fans around.

In Association Football, the chanting is often heard by the players so it has to be more organised and it is less individualistic.

Vive la difference!

You obviously haven't heard the Richmond Cheer Squad before. Every match at 3 qtr time the old Tiger Army chant comes out and the fans go crazy. The Tiges have several chants some borrowed from the Barmy Army and some made up.

Nah. I'm too busy watching the game. This isn't soccer, where you have 90 minutes of nothingness to fill in and entertain yourself.

Go to the toilet at the football, for example, and you miss a goal.

Go to the toilet at the Soccer, and you miss a flare and some guy rolling around on the ground pretending he's hurt. Never mind, though, cause both will likely happen again before the end of the game, scoring or no scoring.

Unless it's a Welsh International. No chanting but plenty of singing. The Welsh sing hymns and welsh language folk songs that they all know because of Chapel, school and the widespread use of the welsh language. You are dead right. Chanting and singing is associated with soccer, individual cheering with Australian Rules. If cheer squads are chanting to a formula, it escapes most spectators.

In the SANFL, Central District supporters are known for their chanting - watch the 2000,2001,2003-5 (even late in this years despite the hammering) SANFL GF's and you'll hear the chants reverberating around AAMI Stadium giving it more atmosphere than a Crows game could ever have.

A group of around 50 Perth Glory shed supporters went to a Fremantle afl game a couple of years ago and were told by security to quiet down or they would be evicted.
