Chapman's contract status

Much will depend on how we fare in finals this year. If we progress beyond week 1, and don't make the GF, he may see it as a sign that time is ready for a 1 year deal. If we are out after 1st week, I can sense he'll be angry and keen to atone. If we won a flag again, he may retire like Lingy did, along with Scarlett and JC.

Flag or not Chappy will be keen to go on. Reckon there's one more year left in him. Predominantly as a forward.

Chappy has more than 1 year left in him, he's shown when played as a forward he can still dominate games, he has the smarts, bulk and skills to sit down in that forward pocket for a few years yet.

As long as Chappy is prepared to not play every game, then we could certainly get 2 more servicable years from him. 15 games per season at his best is better than 20 at 50%.

I know it is a list spot in a very competitive environment but he has earnt that right....

But stats wise, you look at what position chappy was playing when he wasn't in form as opposed to now when he is in form.

He is now playing in the forward line where he belongs, keep him there and I rekon he easily has 2 years in him.
His soft tissue injuries didnt start until he was put on ball and racking up the k's anyway!
Agreed - the worst thing that can happen to Chappy now is for him to be sucked up onto the wings, where he doesn't have the agility any more. Up forward, he's just too big and smart for your average small defender.

I hope the club realise this. Would dominant in the forward pocket as long as that's what is expected of him and not a rotating midfielder etc. He would make a great foil for Hawkins

Scott made clear in his presser this morning that they want Chapman to go on for more than one year but it will only be one year at a time (as Scarlett has had). This article gives me hope that Chappy is coming around to accepting that.

''I know with North Melbourne they have maybe given Brent Harvey six one-year deals.
''As long as that's Geelong's mindset - it's not one year and that's it. Hopefully they say we'll give you a year and if you produce, then we will give you another year and hopefully another year after that.
''These are just the little things that we are going to have to try and work out. Hopefully we can work something out like the Kangaroos did with Brent Harvey.''

It is good news.

I like his tiny clip to the doubters, ""As long as that's Geelong's mindset - it's not one year and that's it. "

He is just the epitome of what it is to be a competitive beast. Love it.

If he keeps giving it all every time like he has been, we'll see him around for a bit longer yet. :thumbsu:

This little ball of muscle and testosterone seems to be the heart and soul of this great team to me. When the heat is on, when a pressure goal is needed from nowhere it is him, SJ, Sel (or even Mackie) who step up and deliver. It would be interesting to know if this "heart and soul" view is shared in the inner sanctum. If so he should be captain, then again he and others probably know it would not work with this angry ant, and he is better to focus on what he does best, and sticking it up the Hawks.

His disposal stats haven't been as good as last year, but still pretty good, think he's 4th at the club ATM.
Probably worth 2 years based on that in a soso year for him, just needs more management these days.

Read this today - interesting footnote about Chappy

http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl...afl-silly-season/story-e6frf3e3-1226471545635

Further news from Geelong suggests the club and champion forward/midfielder Paul Chapman are still some distance off a new deal.
Chapman, 30, has agreed to the club's insistence of offering a one-year contract but the two parties remain in dispute over the financial numeration.
Chapman is a player who believes he received less than full market value when the Cats were attempting to keep their premiership group together.
He now feels that loyalty should be rewarded.

We certainly have a little more $$ for Chappy and other at this point. I have no issues with a reasonable % increase that doesnt kill the team. Good to show the younger ones that patience and the team thinking will be rewarded by the club when it can be....

Its a 2 way street. We all know Geelong has had unders on all players over the last 5 years..... Give a little back to them now we have the space to do so... Just not overly ridiculous player demands however...

If Scarlett comes off the veterans list and Chappy goes on, can't they then increase his pay? Surely he deserves some sort of recompense at the end to make up for his sacrifices.

Can't see how the money would be an issue, particularly given the changes to the vets list to allow us to have about 100k discount each for up to 8 vets, we should be able to give Chappy a good reward.

The sticking point was always year on year and I applaud the club for sticking to their stance on a 1 year deal.

I hope they're just waiting to see who the retirees are and that sort of thing. Once that stuff gets finalised we should look at giving some of the older blokes a nice little bonus at the end of their careers. I'd be pretty angry if we're not doing this so that we've got funds for a big fish. There's no way we should be paying Chappy less so that somebody from outside the club can get payed more.

They'll increase it, but it depends on how much he's asking for. He may want the balance of what he thinks he's owed from the past few years. He may think it's his last year and might as well go for the jackpot. At the moment it's a game of poker, and each side is waiting for the first to blink.
