if this dud is still on out list next season ill seriously cry besides steven handly has there ever been a bigger dud to play for geelong? i dead set can not stand this guy i love geelong as much as anyone abd have been a paid up member for 15 years and i am embarassed whenever i see him in a geelong jumper. surely he is gone hey?

I think that is a bit harsh...Gardiner is a good player who needs to find some consistency in his game...

If i remember correctly he had a good game in the elimination final against melbourne last year....has proven he has the ability now needs to prove he can be consistent enough

You might be thinking of the good 5 minute patch he had in the 2004 Prelim final.

Two words - 1. Brett 2. Spinks

Brett Spinks was a better forward in the 1 year he played than Henry Playfair, Charlie Gardiner, Matthew McCarthy, Tom Lonergan, Barry Stoneham (post broken leg), Mitchell White & Jason Mooney were.

when did charlie sign his last contract ? Queston marks have been over his head for 3 years, so the question is why did we sign him for 3 y. or if he signed last year why did we give him a 2y contract and not 1.

Rubbish Jack , the way I remember it he played 1 good game , he kicked 5 or 6 against the Hawks one day but after that he struggled.Great kick but really could not get enough of the ball to be damaging. A hybid of him and MMC and you have a very good forward.

For mine Id be very suprised to see Charlie go. I was very disapointed in his performance in the VFL finals , he at his stage in devellopment should have gunned the game yet we were ohso Nathan focused because he looked the most likey to do something. That being said there are others Id get rid of first , now that he has not been traded. He has at time played and performed at AFL level , he may well be a player who will play at his best with better players around him. Another point is he is a medium sized forward and with KK gone and us having the chance to have Ottens,Hawkins,Ablett, Mooney in the FL , we will need some mobilty.
Unless we are thinking we will get Thorpe or another leadup the ground forward in the draft , I cant see Charlie going.

Probably true but he was only goodish at WC and crap at Geelong and Stoneham is a bit still to be in there but the rest fair call

His greatest problem is his inability to sustain good form over four quarters.

R1 of the NAB this year he was quite good on Whitnall for about 2.5 quarters.

In the VFL final against Williamstown he was great for about 3 quarters and then did Sweet FA in the last.

As JUBJUB mentioned, the Brisbane prelim cameo also showed how he can come in and out of a game.

In his second game, Vs Sydney 2002, when the Swans were up by 28 a few minutes into the fourth Q Charlie took a great pack mark and goaled from a difficult angle. I was thinking "we might have a decent player here". This quarter was part of Classic Quarters on FFC, Charlie must have been 10kg+ lighter than now, he was tiny (he is pretty big now, perhaps he lost his leap/agility?). This mark started the revival that helped us win that night.

Opposite of SCG experience in 2005.:thumbsd:

Getting off topic - it was actually Maxfield's lack of discipline that helped us win that game. The Swans were up by 28 and cruising and Clarke had bumped Maxfield legally when he had the ball and then Clarke gets the ball and kicks it (poorly:)) and Maxfield bumped him late as a square up....... Downfield free to Moons, kicks forward and Gardiner marks and goals, we get momentum, Ricca goals......... If Maxfield hadn't been a hotheaded douche this wouldn't have happended the way it did. Poor form from a captain, the same reason Moons can't be our captain.

This was part of our 2002 7 game winning streak, we ended up missing the finals by one game (Kangaroos having their first Manuka loss IIRC, to WCE costing us 8th place:(). The 7 game winning streak seemed good at the time, but remember that two of these games were very narrow wins against Carlton (16th) and Sydney (11th).

Great and gardiner do not belong in the same sentence. This guy is THE single biggest dud on our list. Game against syd 5 turnovers in a 6 kick passage that gave syd 4 goals. He makes Kouls look good in the clanger and turnover department. Has to go along with
Koula
McCarthy
Spencer

Catman, shirley you can not be serious!!
Gardiner is a dud of the highest order. The bloke can't mark, goes to ground way too easily, can't hit a barn door and panics under any kind of pressure. Geelong would be better off, cutting their losses and drafting another rookie, who may or may not develop. Either way it would be better than keeping Charlie, since he isn't going to improve. It's staggering to think that this hack has managed to play 49 games in the sacred hoops!!
Charlie has only been kept on the list due to that five minute spell in the 04 prelim when he belied his inherent crapness and played alright.
No doubt, Thompson will keep Charlie around for '07... mostly cos he needs someone to wash his car, but if Gardiner plays more than 6 games, I'll be shocked and appalled. 2007 will be Gardiner's last year sullying the Geelong jumper.

I did say he was a dud...I agree with everything you wrote above.....that's why i said some people have short memories in the off-season. They start thinking ....ohhh maybe he wasnt that bad blah blah.....but we all know he is not an AFL standard footballer, and could have a fine career in the VFL, SANFL, or WAFL where his deficiences are not such a big issue for him.

There is no shame in that and having played 49 games in the hoops is a good effort and there have been many footballers who play for 20-50 games, get found out, and then are dropped. That's life.

Post of the offseason so far - are you reading Geelong coaching staff? This guy is UTTER CRAP! There's a rubber chicken around here at work somewhere that would be more value than Gardiner, it can keep its feet better for a start.

Charlie is a popular club man - and I don't mean a nightclubber - but unfortunately this does not win games. Despite the ongoing injuries, he probably does not have a role in the 2007 side. He has not been a 'dud' but has had his opportunities and not made the most of them - time to give someone else a chance - slight obstacle - he is still contracted to play next season.

Rubber chickens are also popular but they can not keep a position in our forward line either. DUD totally. If he is still contracted then sadly they will not ditch him

To be honest no team can have players with zero duds in them. Charlie isn't that bad, there are far worst players than him on other teams list. I think his very best game is a very good game and can be very damaging to the opposition. The only thing he needs to work on are his kicking and tackling. I would say give him 1 more year and if he does not develop the skills I mentioned before it shows he lacks passion for footy or he simply isn’t good enough to adapt to the new game of football.

His last good game was early 2005 against Footscray at Geelong. He has done nothing, let me reiterate - NOTHING - since.

Did you see this idiot in the VFL Grand Final? He couldn't even stand up, let alone get the ball. And that's a step below AFL standard. What does that tell you?

you are an idiot. (and I suspect a moniker of Bomber Thompson)

First you say NAblett is a dud with very little upside and now Charlie "isn't that bad."

Charlie's very best is very bad.....fin
