Their is a lot to like and appreciate at Tigerland at the moment...

The Admin headed by BGale...Coaching staff with Dimma...Recruiting with FJackson...

The calibre of the new recruits...rookies...ruck..

So i must admit to a tinge of excitment and anticipation for the season to commence...

But its tinged with a tad of unease concerning what i percieve to be the Tigers hidden achilles heel...CHB..

For us to be real contenders for the finals and not just make the first finals and then exit..CHB needs to be solid as rance at FB...

Post...Astbury...Macguane...have all at times made me uneasy...or will IMaric spend a lot of time floating in the back half covering the hole...

I dont think we are solid at CHB...yet...and until we are good sides will ruthlessly exploit our deficiences there...

Am i being overly pessimistic here...

I read someone mention Derrickx as the great white hope for CHB on here last week. Can't remember who posted it but it certainly was an interesting comment.

I'm just glad that took a pick the size and flexibilty of Elton at 26 to give us some options for the future. Next year they'd want to nail that position with a first or second round pick I'd say.

I'm not sure free agency will be the answer because of lack of movement but it could be.

Personally I think it will be either Grimes or Astbuy.

I'm more intrigued about where we are going to play Deledio this year. He's played that sweeper for so long but it would be nice if we could free him up to the ball or even forward line at times.

Totally agree with the OP. When you start throwing the names of the opposition CHFs around, Franklin, Riewoldt, Brown, Cloke and possibly Pav will move back to the CHF possie, and you start wondering who can contain them?

These CHFs are obviously match up problems for every team, but double-teaming with a good midfield pressure may be the go until we find someone.

With Smith now doing the whole ground defence, hopefully the CHB will get some support from up the ground.

Grimes with some weight would be my man (193-just tall enough....needs to be 95-96 kgs IMO).

Fingers crossed on Post. Last year he just seemed to give his man too much space. More confident on Post than Asbtury TBH.

Rance was close to AA at full back, Grimes nailed the third tall role, big Ben griffiths for mine at chb. He will impact and learn a lot about the game from there.

The mail man will be given his chance to cement the spot this year. His body has matured, reads the play well, has a decent kick and a good pair of hands.

Hopefully he will deliver....

I'm pretty confident he will make it

You like?;)

Good pick up...geat to see 'them' back......since Tugga abandoned the wench, the place hasn't been the same with those 'assets' brightening up every thread.

Tugga was the like the boss that recently got promoted and can't come out for beers late with the boys anymore....went PC it seems;)

May we see you posting frequently in every thread...even just a 'Hi'!

I've always like Asbury better than Post, but by all accounts around the forums Post has been impressing preseason... we'll see.

If neither step up I would hope we make a play for Jackson Trengrove. Doesn't seem completely content at Port (apparently was gonna leave last season, and only recently tried to knock out his teammate) and I like the cut of his jib... I think his contract was only a one year extension? (two?)

well, hopefully it doesn't come to that.

Also don't really see Grimes as our FB... wouldn't mind being proved wrong though

while i agree with the general gist of that two things for me.
jackson im not sold on wont criticise him and will say it seems recruiting has been better in recent yrs but the jury is well and truly out on just how well we have done.

chb fb are my major concerns. i just dont see rance as a fb and unlike most i dont think hes been that good there.in saying that last yr was decent and in kpp terms hes still a baby with lots to work on and improve.

its funny rance grigg and houli were all players i wanted us to get as juniors. now that we have them and ive seen a fair bit of them the jury has gone out for me.i think all three will be likely good solid citizens. clearly rance is the incumbent fb atm but that does not mean in time someone wont take his spot.

id suggest rance is more suited to chb and in time grimes especially if he bulks and strengthens up is our future fb.

dave astbury well i have always thought him a forward. obviously hes in the mix for chb and sheesh he may end up being a good one. people just have to remember this kid is 195cm and had just 2 seasons. if it was any other club you would be happy for him to break into the team for his first games this yr id say hes in front of where he should be. he could be either a kpf or kpd.

post sheesh hes had 3 yrs there are aspects of his game that has one drool and then theres others that has you pull your hair out.
imo hes a backman pure and simple but has been played as a utility or all over the shop. i really would like to see them put him in one position and give him a damn good crack at it preferably down back.

nearly all of our talls are babies most of them are yet to prove themselves but they have a little time on their side its not as if they are continually playing like chumps.nope in the main they have done as well as can be expected in the circumstances.
with most of them dont look for sensational yrs but plain old steady improvement. if we get lucky some one like post may well have a v good yr, if that happens that will be a bonus.

again it comes down to expectations lets keep them realistic.

can i just finish by saying if finals was a goal and a must for me this yr i would have gone out and targeted a mature kpd.
as far as i can gather we didnt go down this path.

Very good analogy on Tugg. I reckon if you offered him a beer these days he'd turn his nose up at it and request a chardy. U know these mod types with their airs and graces....

CHB isn't what it used to be.
The days of the traditional goalsquare FB and then roaming CHB aren't as distinguishable as they used to be.

These days you have tall forwards and tall defenders, they lead to different spots, cover space, zone, dummy lead, repeat lead, leave their man etc. It's not as traditional one on one as it used to be.

We need two to three 193cm+ defenders who can also use the footy the opposite way.

I like Rance, Grimes and the potential of Post, Astbury, Griffiths or Elton to be the third one. I think we are okay in defensive stocks, or atleast we have options this year. Not nearly as bad as our defensive stocks when McGuane was our number 1 defender.

I wouldn't go that far:eek:

Many a BF Tiger requested he reinstate his avatar each time he changed it...which he duly obliged...but since becoming a mod....well, the aforementioned 'wench with assets' was discarded without a second thought to us!!

On the beer matter...he is probably right now working through his quota for a Sat;)

Back on topic though....just watched that interview with Post. Good to see he has committed to playing down back and just wants to get it done down there. Let's hope he is able to step up!!

Rance is FB, he's perfect size, strength and courage for the last man in the square.

Grimes is a 3rd tall who has the pace and courage and awareness to chop of long bombs into the defensive 50

I'd like to see Post at CHB first up just because he has the mobilty and the set of hands to go with the gorillas. It's only his strength and decision making which could use improving and by all reports he's worked on both very hard this pre-season

I'm sure the great man is inbibing as we speak ;)
NAB cup will tell us a fair bit i reckon on CHB and FB. 4 weeks to go.

If so look for 2 - 3 goals a game!
