Its not a court of law. They came to an agreement with the pleas virtually irrelevant.

AFL: You plead guilty and we look tough
AFC: You go easy on us or we open up a can of worms on all the other clubs who cheat

We should have pleaded guilty to stupidity. Everyone cheats, its naive to think otherwise. The others are just better at it than us. Thats why none of them have complained about the penalties being lenient. They know they got lucky, and I suspect Melbourne will use this line as their defence for tanking.

I can't see why others don't see this? It's a plea bargain - one where we accepted responsibility but negotiated a lesser penalty due to the technical nature of some of the breaches.

I'd hate to see what we got if we fought it!

That was the threat wasn't it? Fight it and risk worse penalties. That's how the tribunal works. Fundamentally we knew we had stuffed up, but were not prepared to wear a punishment that didn't reflect what we'd done. Remember, we are well positioned to take these 'draft pick' hits - unlike Melbourne and Carlton before us. We are also still able to trade for better draft picks if we need to, and participate in free agency. The punishment was negotiated IMO to ensure the least impact on us given our present list position but still be seen to be a harsh penalty. I liken it to a Clayton's penalty (for those old enough to remember).
