It depends on what the brain in the kits module is capable of and what you can patch into it..

The module doesn't come into the equation if you're just using the pads to send midi into a program such as DFHS, BFD, or Addictive Drums. (or even a plain sampler)

Are you familiar with those kinds of programs?

They can sound quite fantastic and more than believable in the right hands. (I guarantee I could fool you quite easily. ;) )

I just hate the feel of electronic kits however.

Nah not at all dude. I dont even own an electric kit anymore and the last time i did (about 18 months ago) it was all Roland V-Drums mixed with accoustic drums which were triggered pretty similarly to how i explained in my above post.

Definitely sounds like fun though!

Got no doubt about that. Me and my old housemate bought the TD20 module which blew our f*cking minds with its capabilities.

I mean, just as an example, we could dial in that we wanted to play maple shells with powder coated heads and even had the option "place" a patch of gaffa on just to muffle the ring! It was insane. And i could even choose the EXACT same snare sound that you hear on Blood Sugar Sex Magic (IMO just about the best ever recorded) and we didnt get close to exploring its full capabilities. So i cant imagine how far its gone now.

I think i should come past your studio again some day soon dude. Again, it sounds like a heap of fun...

I did as well until i used the Roland mesh heads. Its nothing like accoustic drums, but they still have a much better feel than those god awful rubber pads and what they did do was drill further into me how to play with dynamics and rely so much more on my wrists and improve my over all technique rather than relying on the natural response, feel and sound of my conventional kit(s), which has since served me very well over the last couple of years when doing others gigs apart from your bread and butter rock shows.

Nah not at all dude

They're pretty cool programs.... you can control the amount of mic bleed, control the overheads, room mics, etc etc.... (plus mix and match different pieces from different kits and all that biz of course...)

It's the room mics and mic bleed etc that really make them sound real when used properly imo....hearing the snare-rattle increase the harder you hit your kick drum for example... (obviously these programs are more of a studio thing than a live thing....unlike modules like the TD20 which are more suited to live work)

Yeah, for sure..... we're due for a catch up!

(somewhere other than a wedding or a crappy Living Color gig anyway....! :D ;) )

You realise you guys are making a mockery of my attempted mockery.

:p
