I couldn't find it in the online version on The Age but they have an article and it mentions that Eddie said it was done on purpose

How often does it happen...I went to the Roos v Coll (among others) game and noticed that the pie folk did this:

'Our black 'n' white stripes
is here to stay
Watch out roos
we're here to play'

Shouldn't it read 'Our black and white stripes are here to stay'...surely someone would notice when its being made.....funny s**t.

I remember in 1999 when they put "Colingwood" on the banner!:D

I noticed it too. It's very embarrasing, and doesn't help the stereotype.

For what possible reason?

Is this some sort of toothless scum joke I'm missing?

My man inside the CCS assures me that it was not only grammatically correct, but that it was also factually correct, until Fat'Ed McGuire made them take off the first line

I no! At least I could get a job righting baners hay?

It all depends on how you view it. The way I see it, "Black and white stripes" is considered as one entity in regards to our jumper, so in this instance it's grammatically correct.

It's like saying "The Avengers is a rubbish movie." The Avengers, although plural, is again one entity. "The Avengers are a rubbish movie" doesn't make any sense.

You poor fools. And whose banner is being talked about, whose banner is being shown in the media with all the sponsors logo's all over it.

And you wonder why we get such big sponsorship deals.

Yawn. More spin. Did Eddie tell you to say that?

if it read 'the black and white is here to stay' it would be ok, but when they mentioned stripes then it's not really one entity and it doesn't work.

In my sports marketing class at uni they mentioned that that sort of thing is what sponsors try to avoid. ie being associated with negative things ie an illiterate cheer squad/football club.

Maybe the error was done on purpose so that the banner would be shown (and more importantly the sponsors shown) to get more attention.
Well it kind of worked, I mean with this thread up to 3 pages so far.

Do you really believe that?! Who cares about some supporters making fun of some grammatical error on your banner. I wouldn't take it to heart. Why not just have a laugh about it. Who cares if it was wrong. I believe the Pies supporters have enough confidence in their club and team to not take such things so seriously.

You probably still believe that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I'm not taking it to heart, just pointing out to those who seem to care what the case is. :)

ONE side of Collingwood's banner at Telstra Dome yesterday consisted of black-and-white stripes, with no words. The other side read: "Our black and white stripes is here to stay, look out Roos, we're here to play.
President Eddie McGuire said the grammatical imperfection was deliberate, so that it was at the intellectual level of whoever would have the Magpies play in any other guernsey. McGuire and the Magpies do not recognise grey areas any more than they take prisoners. "

"It was easy to tell the teams apart today," McGuire observed. "The one with the ball was Collingwood."
