Ukraine’s Zelensky says he plans to meet China’s Xi

The decision reflects a rethink by Volodymyr Zelensky, days after a visit with President Joe Biden, on the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

This is significant for all the West’s painting of China as a close ally of Russia even Zelensky has admitted he wants to meet with Xi, and another a Ukrainian diplomat said they were interested in China’s proposal (they take the first point, respecting sovereignty, as endorsement of their primary goal).

If China could accomplish a peace deal, perhaps get Putin to withdraw in return for economic support and get Ukraine to cede Crimea in return for investment deals, it’d be a history changing moment.

China would have accomplished what the western world couldn’t, it would come across as a primarily peaceful actor, and would gain huge kudos from the global south.

Don’t underestimate the importance of this moment.

Good luck with that one. I'm glad they're so peaceful about the invasion of a democracy by their authoritarian neighbour.

This war isn't turning out how either Russia or China expected. No surprises that after 12 months of Ukraine being battered from pillar to post (for no result) China is finally making an intervention.

Given that, if not for the West, Ukraine simply wouldn't exist in its current form, I think many will hold back on the platitudes for China - unless Ukraine comes out of this extremely well.

Nevertheless, China has an ironic opportunity to play a meaningful role and play the 'good guy'. Everyone will be looking on in interest as to how they handle it, balancing the interests of Russia, Ukraine and, most importantly, China.

If I was China, I’d convince Russia to withdraw and deal to buy their resources to restart their economy.

I’d convince Ukraine to drop demands for war crimes tribunals (no way that’ll happen while Putin is in power) and reparations but promise Ukraine to invest in rebuilding Ukrainian infrastructure through the BRI.

There’s no way Zelensky and Putin will ever meet but Xi and Zelensky signing a treaty together would be a history changing moment. For all the West’s and NATO’s intervention on Ukraine it was China who brought about an end to the conflict that satisfied Zelensky, the guy who’s been lauded as a hero by the West

50 years of “peace” negotiations with the US openly backing Israel have been worthless.

China coming in and promising sweet economic deals to both sides if they stop the fighting is probably the only realistic solution to that problem, because nothing else has worked.

Lukashenko going for a visit.
Zalensky going for a visit.
Putin wants Xi to come for a visit.
US bursts China's balloon.

Obviously some high level wheeling and dealing going on,hopefully see some winding down of the war in Ukraine.
