Rumour has it that Collingwood have spoken to Bryan about a possible move to Collingwood, would you guys be happy getting him on board to help your ruck stocks? He's only 24, and a booming left foot, obviously we haven't signed him back up for a reason which most of us Blues supporters have put down to being a little lazy and probably a bit slack with his opponents..

Anyways would you be for or against taking Bryan?

Your an idiot spartan. Keating is way past it and a young ruckman is a way better prospect. Go look up the records, I think you'll find Bryan played more games than Keating this season and a whole lot more than Keating in 2005.

I'd be all for Bryan. I'd rate him ahead of Guy Richards if you could get him playing some good footy. He also has the ability to play somewhere else on the ground (up forward) whereas Richards has ruck and bench. Love his kick.

You have to remember that Bryan was drafted from the VFL having proven himself in that league. He would be better than any mature ruckman we could get from SANFL or WAFL (like that 209cm guy that has a thread dedicated to him). Having said that, there'd be 4 or 5 ruckmen in the national draft that will turn out to be better than Bryan, its just that those players will take time. We should grab the ready to go ruckman (bryan) with a late pick/psd and then grab a ruckman for the future with 28.

I like him. i think he's got something hey. Did anyone see that game on fox sports 3 or whatever it is the other night? The carlton vs sydney game. The guy had a massive influence on the game, I think he can definately play, is a better option than Keating (due to fitness) and would offer a fair bit around the ground also. That game he reminded me of Jeff White.
But yeah, it's just getting him to do it i guess.
Probably still prefer Joel Perry.

guys, whoever is bagging chris bryan's abilty seriously should go and check some game tapes. this guy has so much potential and carlton where dumb to let him go.

he is athletic and can kick a ball like no bodies business,

he would be better than richards

he is not much of a ruckman tho

similar to fraser in that his strength is his mobility around the ground and booming kick, but he struggles in the ruck.

dont want a fraser clone who is about 1/10 of his actual ability

we want different type of ruckman, a monster who can play 40min and jump into the other bloke wearing him down so that fraser can work him over around the ground and win a couple of ruck contests

Bryan may be good but my concren is his height and body up against the likes of cox and sandilands .Ok for a back up but not main option.I would still prefer keating. What about meyer from williamstown,i heard the pies are talking to him too.A fit keating would have been perfect for our needs.

kicked 68 metres off one step at Princess Park in August.

that has nothing to do with ruckwork

carlton are in just as bad a state in the ruck department as us, ie ackland or mclaren will be the first choice ruck next year, de luca & french both retired.

yet they still didn't bother with keeping bryan as a back-up ruck

prob because he is an ordinary ruck, his main talent is his big kick and ability around the ground.

we already have the best around the ground ruck in the game, we need a big monster who can win some taps, they are hard to find but bryan certainly doesn't fit the bill as a big bodied monster ruck

We offered him a contract which he declined; he obviously isn't with familiar with the proverb: "beggars can't be choosers"

Just correcting you, his main talent is just his big kicking, his efforts around the ground really are sub-par.

cheers, even less reason to take him then

wow he can kick a footy, perhaps he should follow big benny graham and try out as a punter

He started well in 2005 and looked as if he had the goods. If a change of club could get him to pull his finger out he could be a handy player. Big "IF" though. Short term option maybe to cover your gap until you build up another young option.

Agree we need a ruckman. Don't think we need a tall to call a ruckman. That's been our problem all along. We can get one at the pub around the corner. I haven't seen much of Bryan so I can't say he can't ruck but Carlton though a bit of him 12 months ago, they wouldn't play him in 2006 and now they appear to prefer Acland. That tells me (sight unseen of course) that, at best, he's no better than anyone else we have debated as a PSD or late pick option. It's not like Carlton can afford to let go anyone with a hint of ability and application let alone someone that is 197cm.

Of course good players are let go by crap clubs all the time. Hopefully our crew can make a better talent appraisal than recent history suggests.

Timmy, I sense you are getting a bit nervous about the ruck. Well a lot nervous actually. The writing’s been on the wall for some time. IMO the problem is deeper than the list it is the compliers of the list, their player desires and their talent assessment.

Well, yes I am although I'm trying to look forward about what to do about it rather than look back. The day you are relying on Guy Richards to play 22 games is the day to press the panic button. I dont think we want T Cloke rucking too much as he is supposedly Tarrants replacement in a key forward post. Fraser ideally is better around the ground (although that wont happen this year). Rocca is past it as a ruck option.

The only fix we have right now is a temporary tenure for a healthy, fit, big bodied player, VFL standard or hopefully slightly better, to work as a backup until such time as our drafted ruckmen come on stream in about 2009.

I agree. Just not sure what the healthy, fit, big bodied player’s name is. Not quite sure about your assumption about a drafted ruckman either. As I said, we don’t seem to value the role and can’t seem to judge the abilities. I think the two are connected. MM is the most to blame IMO.

Looking forward and fixing the problem doesn’t just mean getting a ruck option it means addressing the cause of the dire need.
