I think this ruckman, from the Collingwood Football Club, could be a nice ready made 2nd ruckman with Hille as they can both go forward and be very dangerous...Collingwood have Wood & Fraser as their ruckman, and it's hard to see Bryan getting a game towards the end of this year and beyond...I like his smooth kicking action and his marking ability and it's silly to even compare him to Laycock's attributes...Layc*ck isn't up to AFL standard, sure he can occassionally go forward and kick a goal or two but that's about it, is slow and doesn't exactly put his head over the ball every time he has to...He has had his fair share of oppurtunities and I just don't think he can cut it, even after his fantastic preseason this year...I'd like to hear when Chris Bryan's contract expires and what type of players would people be prepared to offer...People will probably laugh this off and not think much about, keeping straight vision and remembering him as a Carlton reject, but I think he has some potential...Opinions..?

No thanks, Paddy and Hille will manage just fine.

Paddy was drafted as a ruckman, though don't you think his wisdom can be put to much better use playing a free-flowing role off the half back line..? Paddy looks like he has so much time when he has the ball, not like many other players on our list, so I think putting one of our top players behind the ball controlling play could be just what he can be successfully used for in the team...

Of course he looks so much better than other players when he's got the ball, which is why he should be playing up the ground in the ruck, where he can hit our forwards on the chest lace out, push forward and use his masive leap to take fantastic marks and goal and use his massive leap and brilliant tapwork to be setting up our midfielders. He could be an absolute gun in the ruck, and i feel that those qualities he brings to the team would be better suited to the ruck amd would be much more effective for the team if played in the ruck because his tapwork to advantage is so great. Down back he is solid, and provides great disposal off half back, but we could replace him with Pears in the future, and then we may possibly draft Hurley this year to replace Mal down at Full Back, which would enable Ryder to move into the ruck.

I'd love to have an A grade ruckman at the club, and I think Ryder could become this for us if he made the switch back to the ruck.

Ryder should end up in the ruck, hopefully from next year onwards. Trade Laycock for a 3rd rounder, use that pick for a tall defender. Then we just have to hope we strike gold with that pick :D

Bellchambers would do well enough as a backup ruckman should one of our main guys go down. Now is the time where we need to find out just how effective Ryder can be in the ruck. Given his huge leap, and another preseason under his belt, he can turn into a Cox-like player. It would be like having 4 midfielders starting in the centre square.

We've got no one else down there that has his potential, our backline would be a rabble without him, it already is even with his efforts so imagine if he left that position next season...We might draft Hurley, even if we do, he won't come in and slot straight into the side, especially FB...I know what you're saying, he'd be good in the ruck as well, no doubt, but where the state of our team is at the moment I just think he is needed down back...

kiddin yourself. everyone bags laycock. aand u wanna bring him over. he has played like 3 games in 2 seasons at the pies.

He has played 14 games with his two seasons at the Pies thus far...
I didn't want to bag Layc*ck, I've been trying to hold off bagging him for sometime but enough is enough, he's simply not up to AFL standard at the moment...

ive prob seen him do somthing in 2 games then ha ha. yeh im not sayin laycock is good. but replacing him with bryan no way

You guys and your Ryder in the ruck obsession are off the mark.

He is too small for a true ruckman and if he was to play there permanently over time he would lose his spring and end up as not what he could be.

Not to say he can't pinch hit there but he will never be a full time ruckman.

Just like Jeff White?

Disagree...

John Barnes had a fantastic career as a ruckman and was barely over 6'4''; Simon Madden, one of the best in the modern era was only 6'5''; Ryder at 6'6'' can easily be a full-time ruckman.

I wouldn't want him to be used as a full-time ruckman, more of a ruck-rover once he builds up his tank.

How far back in history do you want to go?

Nichols was short also.

Different era Smythy

He is too small and those guys you mentioned also were a lot more thick set than Paddy, who will never have a big build.

He will not stand up to the rigours of rucking full time.

Paddy Ryder: 197 cm, 91 kg
Jeff White: 195 cm, 97 kg.

Jeff White mightn't be the size of a "true ruckman", but he sure is a damn good ruckman. Its not inconceivable that Ryder can put around 5kgs on between now and next year. It wouldnt hinder his athleticism too much I wouldnt think.

Cox is much bigger than Ryder, but he is a freak. He is the ONLY gun tap ruckman who is useful around the ground. There is a push to get mobile ruckmen into the game and Ryder would be one of the only young guys in the league that could play the role.

Others already stepped in with White.

Natunui is considered the best ruck prospect in the draft and he's only 196.

Troy Simmonds - 196.

Paddy is deceptively strong with his frame. I think he should play second ruck and float forward/wing similar to Richo this year.

Apparently Naitanui is around 200 now, don't know how true it is though.
