Thoughts, gentleman?

Right age bracket for the Dees. And we certainly have room in the cap, and former Collingwood assistant Mark Neeld as a senior coach.

We wouldn't expect him to come in and kick 60-70 goals next year. But he would be great for our structure, taking so much heat off Watts, Jurrah, Howe, and to a lesser extent Green. If he kicked 35-40, he'd be more than doing is job.

We'd need to offer pick 12 as he is their second KPF and definitely in their best 22. I'd consider this.

IMO whatever it takes, we could offer twice what the pies are paying him.
He will most likely have two medallions by year end.
It is time to make some money son.

This is a guy I would like to see us throwing the sink at. A big, clunking, gorilla forward!

Would be keen if he didn't cost the world, I have queries over how he'd go without Travis Cloke around him. He'd certainly provide structure but not sure how much else he'd offer when he's the focal point...

In any case I don't see him leaving the pies.

Agree with all of this. I think he'd be great for the Melbourne forward line for obvious reasons, but the chances of him leaving Collingwood are slim. He's great for the Collingwood forward line too and he wants to re-sign with them.

Would happily offer up pick 12 for him, even if it's paying slight overs. Saying that, he hasn't set the world on fire in the second half of the season. Still, he'd be great for us.

Word on the street is that Dawes lacks intellectual stimulation at collingwood (not surprising). Perhaps Stephan Martin's presence will help lure him to the dees

LOL, him and Stef Martin making everyone feel stupid in the changerooms, good for the team!

Would love Dawes at the Dees.

He is just what we need for the next 2-3 seasons.

In the end I have a pretty firm belief that Lucas Cook will pass him, he just has a lot more to offer IMO, but Dawes would be in his prime then and would be worth quite a lot on the open market.

Would be a good move by the club, and with Neeld joining I'm optimistic if he wants to leave.

Pick 12 and maybe a sweetener. Dawes is fairly overrated by the media.
Dawes will never be a 70 goal a year player, but that's not his role.

Neeld talked about holes in our best 22, and not having the players at the club capable of fulfilling those roles. Having a player like Dawes would certainly help Watts, Jurrah, Petterd, Wona and Davey, so even if Dawes doesn't kick a bag, collectively our forward line is stronger.

Last year we drafted 4 kpps, and I'm not convinced that any of them can play a Dawes role. There a times when you need to take the Sydney and Hawthorn approach, and trade for players who can fill a role in your team, even if you pay over the odds.

I am not denying that he is a good player who fills a role but we shouldn't break the bank to get him.

LADS i started a thread on him 5 weeks ago when i got some inside word we will go after him, expect melbourne to offer him in the vacinity of 1.2-1.4 for 3 years....and i first pick plus a player maybe a dunn or bate or even maric....

Luke ball not enough for him?

We've got three first round draft picks and it is supposed to fizzle out from 15 onwards.

Throw two first round draft picks as a sweetener to get him. We don't necessarily need three more young players when we've practically got the core.
im glad your not in charge, 2 first rounders, its a wonder you didnt throw in j watts as well.

Delist Brad Miller and a year later throw the sink at a very similar player in Chris Dawes, Melbourne's list management working wonders again.

Pick 12 wouldn't be enough even if you/we/the club think that's too much (some would suggest it's no where near enough), he's one of those players that because of age & potential that we'd have to pay overs to get unless he demanded to leave. Dawes name has been thrown up every draft period since the year after he was drafted & even while he hadn't shown anything Collingwood didn't let him go then for what were supposedly some good offers from rival clubs.

I would suggest that unless Dawes wants to leave he won't be going anywhere, as Collingwood have shown they're very keen to keep him in the past & he has done nothing to show they were wrong holding on to him

hes a Paul Johnson clone.

Id give a 4th rounder for him, nothing more.

24 goals as a stay home forwasrd in the most dominant side in the comp is pitiful.

I have to agree. I though he bagged more than that. But a couple of dozen goals in the premier side who have an amazing midfield who deliver the ball into the F50 constantly isn't a great return.

Edit: Even Jurrah kicked 40 odd in 3/4 of a season in a team whose inside 50's are akin to trying to hit a bullseye on a dartboard with a tooth pick blindfolded.

Don't just look at Dawes' goals kicked in isolation. Because of his size and ability to clunk a mark, he allows Cloke to go one on one with his opponent regularly. He doesn't allow your Jared Rivers or Josh Gibsons of this world to leave him alone so they can go third man up against Cloke. (In our case, see Jurrah or Watts.)

Dawes would also give our midfielders a get of jail option. That is, if they get in trouble they can just bomb it long to the top of the square to him, where at the very least he will bring the ball to ground for our crumbers. (None of us want Wattsy or Jurrah getting smashed in these circumstances.)

I'm not suggesting Dawes is a world beater. But he would be very handy to our structure and really benefit our other forwards.

Dawes is pretty good. But we need a CHF and I have doubts over his mobility. I think with Watts, Jurrah and Howe we can cover the full forward position. We don't need to be a carbon copy of Collingwood.

But I do think we need a true CHF. I think its a vital recipe in a premiership side and will be important to Neeld's structure. At the moment we've only got Watts and Cook for that area and I'm not convinced on either of them (nor am I giving up on either of them).

Watts will be that true CHF, he isn't a FF.

Dawes kicked 24 goals in 16 games, don't forget.

That's around 35 goals for a season (22 games).

That's a solid return and all we would need from him.

He will also improve by moving out of the shadow of Cloke.
