For two years now our team selection has been hampered by the fact that we have one too many tall defenders and refuse to drop one of them. Plus we continue into our fifth year of deciding what position Mark Blicavs is best suited to.

A month or two ago, CS trotted out one of his favourite lines about team structure: "We're undecided and haven't really settled. We think that's a good thing." No, CS, it really isn't.

This is a team that can definitely take it all the way in a year of no stand out teams. We were rightfully very warm favorites for the Richmond game. After 2011 we have underachieved in our finals campaigns compared to where we finished on the h&a seasons. But I will accept circumstances: we didn't have rucks. And last year I'll take one game in 28 days as a factor. But not this year, and not with dropping Menzel. When you drop your second highest goal kicker and x-factor player, then you had better win the match you are expected to win. And we didn't.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but I was really disappointed to hear Scott play down our poor record after byes by saying that over the course of our losses after bye rounds we have turned over most our list, there for its a different group of players and not at all similar. Well actually yes it is because it possibly means that it's our system that is leading to our players coming out flat after bye rounds. Richmond were much more switched on in the 1st qtr than we were, they looked up and about. Maybe it wasn't the bye, it might have been the shell shock of having the most hostile crowd many of our players had probably every played against, but we can't rule the bye out either.

Clearly Scott isn't going to be sacked atm he just signed a new contract and that's not the way Cooke does things.
I would like to see some other appointments though.
Who is our opposition analyst? Other clubs have them do we?
We need a ruck coach, Vardy commented when he got to west coast how helpful it was to have a specialised ruck coach.
We need a goal kicking and specialist kicking coach. Our goal kicking has improved this year Menzel the most improved. He worked with Nigel lappin over summer and Brad Johnson with the forwards.
Can we make kicking one of Lappins main roles? The Hawks have had a kicking coach who works on kicking with all the players.
During the flag era I remember that nrl coaches came in a few times to teach tackling.

I think the talent is there on the list and will be added to again in the trade period. And the development that some have questioned is there. But there's still some fine tuning and refining that needs to continue.

I don't know what Simon Lloyd's impact has been. But I was happy with his appointment and no reason not to be. And I like that he is not an ex geelong or Brisbane player. We need some different perspectives.

With Cooke signalling he'll step down soon it only leaves Wells as key off field people left from the era. Change is inevitable but success is not.

If we were to be absolutely flogged next Friday night does anyone think that the calls for Scott to be replaced would start to be amplified through the media? It may be that we've gone as far as we can with him as coach. I recall in '94 there was a recognition from Blight that he'd done all he could to win a flag with us. He recognised that his race had been run. I wonder whether even Scott may start to read the tea leaves next Friday night?

it would be interesting to see bucks go on with his record and chris scott sacked with his record... but i wouldn't be adverse to that outcome.

Chris Scott and Matthew Knights have failed to educate the Geelong playing list the right playing method (winning the 1 on 1 contests and making good decisions on the field) that wins games in September. Our finals record since the 2011 Grand Final is disgusting because we have finished in the top 4 (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017) without making the Grand Final and winning the big one whilst the window is open. If you don't educate and teach the playing list the right process that stands up in the September cauldron, you will finish 2nd to 5th every year when the side on paper has the ability and talent to wind the Grand Final.

I posted this on the main AFL board, but thought I would repost here;

Between 2007 and 2011, Geelong came out playing a specific game plan every week (attacking, taking the game on, trying to blow teams out of the water) and dared other teams to beat them. Sometimes they did (2008 GF, 2010 PF), but more often than not, Geelong won.

Hawthorn played a particular style that suited their playing list from 2013-2015 and dared sides to beat them. When Sydney play, you know what they are going to do, but very few teams have been able to stop it in the 2nd half of the year. Adelaide have developed their own brand of football based on their playing list, and it is paying dividends.

Since 2012, we've slowly reverted to unnatural, defensive structures and tricksy gimmicks (Taylor to FF on Rance, dropping Menzel) to try and win games. The blame for this lies at the feet of the coaching staff (Chris Scott included) and particularly the Director of Coaching (Simon Lloyd). Chris Scott was voted the coach that was 'hardest to coach against' by his peers, but that just means they don't actually know what style of game Geelong plays. I'd much prefer we were voted 'the hardest side to play against', as we used to be.

We've got the talent on our list, but it isn't being utilised as well as it could be, that's for sure.

There won't be. Under Scott, they just do the same thing over and over again and somehow expect a different result.

They might point out that they have McCarthy and Cowan to return next year. Could make a big difference.

Agree. We finished I think equal top this year. So no reason to be optimistic particularly after the sparkling game against GWS where it was hard to pick the best player they were all so good and played as a team. Two weeks later we look like the equal bottom and lose opportunity to go all the way.
Our decision making as appalling, there was hardly a kick that went further then 25mtrs, often to a Richmond player. No-one seemed game to kick for goal-Mackie dead in front, Hawkins the same- one can only think that they are yelled at if the y miss so are not confident of having a go.
Scott is unable to get player ready for any game let alone finals. How may times this year have we struggled in the first 1/4 only to have to catch up.
We don't have specialist coaches so where is the football club money spent.Is it on adminstrators rather than coaches or has it all gone into a ground that we can't use for finals and get only 7 home games a year.
Time for some answers, another wasted season. Even harder to maintain membership and attendance for 2018. Pathetic all round

Does nothing to change the fact that his coaching records in finals since 2011 (when Mickey Mouse could have coached the team to the flag) is SHIZEN (and probably about to get worse as Sydney rips us a new one next week...) Can't win flags (the ultimate point of good H & A performance) with piss-poor finals performances. That is the coaching record that REALLY counts!! Do you think people are going to be talking about H & A coaching records that DON'T result in decent finals performances? Who f'in cares?

Historical data points to the fact that current coaching group (with Scott as leader) has no f'in idea how to deal with the bye. Talking about hostile crowd, etc. (applicable to this post-bye match only) is a red herring!

Exactly. Team selection is decided by where Scott puts his favourites instead of picking the appropriate players due to form and fitness. Anyone else think that might become a problem?

Its the coach but it's also the players they are not good enough or hard enough byy a fair margin.

There's only 2 players on our list that play better at the business end of the season, Joel Selwood and Zach Touhy, the rest are well down on everything come finals.

We see it during the year, our team is capable of beating anyone, but come finals, we almost never look like winning, why? Is it because we just don't have the cattle? Don't think so, look at Richmond, a team full of players who play their role and know what they have to do.

Scott has proved it time and time again that he fails when the real test starts, I'm not sure he knows what to do, he'll be having sleepless nights this week thinking "what do we do", then there will be some incredibly bizarre changes made, and come Friday night Sydney will come out of the blocks and be 6 goals up at QT, while we try and try and get nowhere.

I don't know how anyone can seriously compare our list now with our list 2007-11.

We have two brilliant midfielders and one excellent one. A few others run hot and cold.

We have one key forward who still lacks confidence after all these years and an exciting mid-size forward who they chose not to play because he lacks defensive abilities.

Our defence is generally fine but has ageing champions and young players still learning the game.

Doesn't excuse Scott from his mistakes, but gee, it's not as if we have a team of superstars.

I often wonder about that. Particularly the dearth of specialist coaches and wonder whether the club is not as financially sound as we think, or are they just so caught up in the bricks and mortar side of things that they have neglected the fact that we are a football club first.

You know what would probably happen? He'd get dropped. They'd work out he's not up to it under pressure and be moved on. Not kept in the senior team because of mythical qualities, or one semi-competent game three years ago, or because there's no replacement (one of the more pathetic excuses).

Then don't tolerate mediocrity. Sadly it looks like we do.
