Can't find the thread on Chris Tarrant, so thought I would start a new one. And I apologise if this has been suggested before.

Does anyone think he should be trialled in the midfield? As someone mentioned on the main board, he is quite athletic and is super speedy, but just doesn't seem to be able to kick as many goals as we'd like. Maybe have him in the midfield and Murphy up forward.

What do you think?

The further away from goals the better. He must be one of the worst kicks for goal in our whole team - and he's supposed to be a key forward? He makes Richo look like Pav.

I wonder how he'd go at full back? Although his ego probably wouldn't handle a 'demotion' to the backline very well.

Well - if his current form continues we have to do something.
Whether we push him further out into the midfield or even the half back line.
It was mentioned last year and I though it was not a bad idea but how about we give trial him in defense. He can mark and apply pressure.
In no way is giving him CHB or FB a demotion Esti. He is a good player and he may thrive there. We need a FB.
He may turn out to be a decent defender, thus releasing McPharlin to swing between the forward line and backline when needed.
Otherwise he may find himself back in the old black and white stripes playing for Swan Districts.

I know it's not a demotion. But an egotistical glamour forward might think it is.

Make him watch a video of Ryan O'Keefe. Best half forward flanker in the AFL.

Works his arse off between the 50's and is a real key to the Sydney side.

Tarrant supposedly has a massive tank and according to Pies fans did his best work in 2003 as a link man working up the ground from the forward 50. He has no physical presence and if he is not moving around and getting his hands on the ball, will not add anything to your side, IMO.

Whatever happens, a dud performance in the Rd 3 derby is fine with me.:)

...which is why with his marking ability, pressure skills and game reading ability a KP defense position isn't a bad idea and worth a shot IMHO kram81...

do you guys regret letting go of medders?

Yep! All he needed was the right coach.Lokks like he may have found one.

Bounce Tarrant back to the WAFL and don't let himback in the squad until he kicks a bag of 8 or more. If not trade him to us for Jamie Graeme and hopefully we can get more out of h im..likewise for Graeme.

Trent Croad Mk II?

There's a lot of similarities. Neither of them really wanted to come to Fremantle but Cameron Schwab in his wisdom convinced them to come across. Both are introverts not suited to the spotlight of a two team town. Both are pretty boys and look like footy isn't their number one priority at times.

Atleast Croad was young and could play forward and back.

People assume that you stick a bloke in the middle and he suddenly becomes a midfielder. Midfielders are recruited, they're not made. Being able to run fast doesn't make someone a midfielder.

It was a ridiculous decision to recruit another forward when it was obvious that we needed midfielders and with Hasleby out we are in deep shit.

Tarrant is a forward. He has only kicked one goal in his last four games and needs to find form quickly. If he can't get a kick against an under sized Hawthorn backline then his spot will be in jeopardy.

Watching him at training in a one on one marking scenerio, rotating through players, it seemed he really struggled to mark in a one on one tussle. However if he got a tiny bit of space he could mark over the top or make good position to take the grab.

Last year his better performances came from him running up the ground as that link player mentioned.

I thought blind freddy would be able to see that Tarrant needs a license to run, to get space. I have confidence he will bounce back next week. I could not see him making the greatest midfielder though.

He would have a license to run but if things aren't going his way he loses confidence and goes into his shell. Needs to harden the **** up.

Are you kidding? We had a massive surplus of less than 180cm shorties, still do. Medhurst in our team just doesn't work, unless we get rid of the bells, j carrs, farmers, blacks, schammers of our team, all of who are probably better than medders.

Catch 22 with Medders. He's a very good player who was going through a massive confidence slump. If he'd stayed with us he probably wouldn't have pulled out of his slump. He really needed a change of scenery. Now that he's playing instinctually as he did when he was recruited I'd love to have him back but he wouldn't be playing like this if he hadn't left!
Tarrant should never have been recruited. That draft put us a year behind in rebuilding the midfield. I hope they have the guts to say we made a mistake and put him in the 2's if he continues to play the way he has been.

Id be inclined to play Tarrant at FF from the square so he will always be close to a contest in the forward line and get him taking more shots at goals. He needs to find more of the pill and become confident at taking set shots. It only takes a couple of games, hes quality but just isn't getting in the game at the moment. He's strong overhead and will trouble most FB's on the lead I reckon.

I know it's been said over and over but he needs to be further up the ground. With Pavlich deep and farmer somewhere in the middle.

No point dropping him back to the WAFL, he doesn't strike me as the "fight back from the brink type". Dropping him will only put him further back and kill any confidence he has left.

Was only the first game of the year folks so,don't worry too much.
But definately Tarrant, and co will give a better account of themselves at your home ground this week.
Will definately see a different freo side tackle the hawks this week.
Tarrant (should be played up the ground more, beacuse of his speed )
Pav and farmer to have a field day in Subiaco this week.
After a good win to Melbourne,i reckon the hawks will stuggle in Perth.
Freo by 30 points.

We have some depth in the tall forwards, and I think whoever i showing the best form should be selected. Tarrant is notionally best 22 and should be selected this week, but if he is failing to contribute I would relegate him rather than try and turn him into a midfielder or backman, and certainly not try and do that at AFL level. Drum seems a better option than him in those roles if we want to go down that path.

Screw him then. If he doesn't have the balls to fight back from being dropped then he's obviously too mentally soft for us to rely on him.

I'm sick of players getting games on reputation and not performing. If his form doesn't improve drop him to the WAFL. If he cracks the shits then offload him at the end of the year. We won't get what we paid for him but we should still find some takers willing to offer a second round pick or something..

Its taken a collingwood supporter to make some sense on Tarrant ... we are starting to sound like ill informed west coast mothers who have become footy experts and start bagging there own... The problem in the side is not only Tarrant hes not the only one who cant kick ..... I agree Saturday wasnt one of his better games but hell be alot better this year than last ... We have plenty of coaches none apart from Harvey (in a couple of years at Essendon) that have had any real success at AFL level as assistant coaches etc ?? Im sure theyll have a little meeting and come up with the right formula ????

My formula is to get out the birth certificates at training , dont wait until they are 22-23 to find out whether your kids can or can not play .... at least they have an excuse for not hitting a target ...
