We've seen a few clubs turn their season around to a degree recently via a change of coach.

Clubs heading down a path they don't like, despite their best efforts are unable to turn things around, no light at the end of the tunnel. Feel they have no option but a sacking.

That releases the pressure. Frees the players up. Caretaker has energy, effectively campaigning for a career.

For us is there anything we can do in the short term (the rest of this season) - short of sacking Pyke because we won't - that can turn our form around?

The major overhauls to list, game plan and staff can obviously only be made in the off season.

So given our existing list and personnel, are there any semi drastic changes (on field or off field) we could initiate which would synthesise the effect of a coach sacking and re-energise the group? That make people feel that this is something new and different?

Based on mathematics and past good performances, the season is 100% salvageable if decisive action is taken immediately. The only people who wouldn't agree with this are the sort of crazy people that would complain if Adelaide didn't use a grand final to blood 5 debutants.

Regardless the situation is dire, here are my uninformed masterplans to save 2019:

  • Totally Unrealistic proposal - Pyke's position is near terminal now IMHO. The idea that its solely his assistants dragging him down seems unrealistic, the only way I could believe that if a large number of assistants/support staff were sacked, effective immediately. So they could do that?
  • Unrealistic proposal - Sack Pyke anyway, start the search for his replacement now. Clarke takes over for the rest of the season (based on AFLW form) or hire a short-term "name" coach for the last part of the season (impractical due to cap).
  • Implausible proposal - Dual ruck attack. I continue to harp on about the side's structure (not individual players) having superfluous 'non-statistical' forward roles. One of them should be dumped, (or Lynch or Atkins if you want to be hyper-aggressive about non-performers,) to bring in Jacobs to backup o'Brien. Not because I think Jacobs would add much, because I think O'Brien would be useful rotating into other positions. I think they definitely considered this when Jenkins was out of the side, but O'Briens poor kicking would be a negative.
  • Practical proposal - Select the side on merit, no dropping players for any reason other than you think they're not in the best 22. (+ Himmelberg or Fogarty replacing one small forward)

Ignoring the list problems and so on that impact on field right now, there's burnt bridges and too much mess all around. It's like too much has gone on inside the relationships down there. Some of it not their doing to each other, some of it is (the camp, Collective Minds example)

Respect, trust and true care is gone. Some should have been removed and I believe it only resulted in greater disdain for them and the management in general.

Even the stuff that no one has actually done wrong can just start to wear and sour things. Almost sick of the sight of some certain people type thing. The end of the road is coming for many and they know that. Early on, some of this worked for us but now it's past that. Especially if you realise the chance of success and light at the end is dying out.

So... hard to think of much you can do to erase a build up over time like that. It won't happen, but sacking someone like Burton would be a small start. A figure that has pissed off many.

There’s the positive energy of the caretaker coach, however you’d think there’s also an element of fear. I.e. everyone is on audition for next season. Hell the head coach just got the arse, I could be next. Maybe the caretaker or the new bloke won’t like me, better pull my finger out etc.

Our blokes on the other hand know they can get blown away, put in an unacceptable effort and there’s a high probability that they will “be backed in next week”.

It’s a shocking culture that’s been fostered. Then when someone gets singled out and dropped they have every right to get shitty. You’d feel like you just lost gold pass lotto.

So I’d just be saying **** finals, we don’t deserve it. By the way, everyone is playing for their spot next year. If you put in a poor effort, you will be dropped. If you’re not in the side come years end, be worried.

The crows management will react when:

1. We miss the finals
2. Home attendances plummet
3. Public sentiment turns volatile (they do care about this, despite pretending not to).

If only 35,000 rocked up at the Saints game for example as part of a supporter protest, plus the odd banner held up in the crowd, we'll see some change.

Unfortunately any change in head coach, without also culling and trading aggressively isn't going to do much at all.

The feeling I get us that supporters are totally fed up with the way the club is run, the fact Chapman has quietly had his term extended by an extra 3 years, and the fact that members hage very little say in electing the board, or changing the club's direction.

4. Port move ahead of us.

Its a good point about the sentiment, I often think about this. It's amazing how much they hate criticism given that they have no accountability to us whatsoever.

Play the kids, at all costs. Back them in, tell them they have 4 games and won't be dropped. Come what may.

The infectiousness of youth is often overlooked and underrated. It may even give some of the older guys a new lease on life.

Last week Pyke said he believes that you ignore youth at your peril

I could be wrong but I’m thinking we are currently imperiled

Season is over... look at our remaining draw.. we could easily lose all our remaining games. In fact I can’t see us winning any of them starting with the saints next week.

Also.... We’ll end up 3 or 4 spots up the ladder from Carlton and the pick swap lost. Let that sink in considering where it was all sitting just over a month ago.

We'll end up 10th at worst and they won't move with their draw.

Pick 3 and 21, they get 8 and Shocker.

Blues only save face with this trade if we don't win another game and finish, say, 12th.

Crows - Pick 3
Blues - Pick 7 & Pick 19 (last year's)

But do they?

If we had picks 7 & 19 and offered it up last year to Gold Coast for pick 3, would they have accepted that? I think probably not. Clubs do not part with picks in the top-3 unless there is a godfather offer.

Correct. Carlton only did it because they thought they were closer to a serious spike than they were. They thought even a jump to 10th or so could happen. And that we could easily hover around 8th. Which would have made it worthwhile in their eyes.

No one is giving up say pick 3 for what looks to be coming back their way.

It's easy to get caught up in the emotion of today and how shit our season has been, but we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that Carlton still muffed this trade. They correctly forecast our likely ladder position, but not their own.

Heading into ‘Cornes for Columbia’ territory there!
