Civilization IV

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Well, had it for two days, haven't really enjoyed it to tell you the truth. (And I loved the original Galactic Civilizations). So will be taking it back today.

I much prefer RTS, sports sims and first person shooters. I'm guilty as charged of being a huge fan of The Sims 2 however :D today, might get an extra extention pack and also look at Empire Earth III.... sveeeeeeeeet :D

Played Civ III from the chronicles packet and boy, what a disappointment!

Rocket 23 once told me that whilst you have fond memories of old games, if you ever go back they aren't really as good as you would care to remember and you need to move on.

Am really enjoying Civ IV and when I get my modem fixed at home I'm downloading the Aussie mod from civfanatics and giving that a whirl.

With the money I got back from Civ IV, I got San Andreas for PC and Empire Earth II Platnium Edition (Expansion + Game Guide). All up $54.95, so I saved money. God bless EB and their 50% off sales :D

Does anybody know if there is a cheat in CIV IV so you can play the Barbarians? I want a black flag!! They look so much tougher than everyone else shouldnt be so easy to beat.

Just found on that site that they are going to release a new expansion pack: Civ4: Beyond the Sword expansion pack.
  • Final Frontier: A space scenario where you control a human colony and expand your territory in space.
  • Afterworld: A squad-based tactical "thriller" where the player fights undead in the X-com style.
  • Gods of Old: A scenario focused on religion.
  • Chaos: A game of Civilization where you constantly face exciting random events.
  • Next War: A futuristic sci-fi scenario with clone armies and more.
  • Charlemagne: Conquer Europe during the renaissance.
  • Crossroads of the World: A late medieval age scenario where you explore and conquer the crossroads of the world in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
  • Broken Star: Civil war has struck the Soviet Union. Unite the russian bear!
  • Superrobo: Be the first civilization to find and collect the parts to a giant mysterious robot that crashed on Earth.
  • WWII Road to War: Atlast! Play as the Allies or Axis in both the Pacific and Europe.
  • Fall from Heaven: A popular fantasy mod for Civilization IV, improved for the expansion.
  • Rhye's and Fall of Civilization: Another improved and updated favorite among the fan's mods for Civ IV.
Looks pretty good - especially the Final Frontier scenario where you can expand into space. Space Balls anyone?

Sounds alot like Alpha Centauri, which was basically Civilization in Space. Made by the same guy.

The below are the key features:

  • Expanded Epic Game: Firaxis Games delivers a massive increase in new units, buildings, and technologies to the epic game with additional focus on the late-game time periods.
  • New Game Scenarios: The expansion will deliver 12 new scenarios custom designed by the team at Firaxis and select members of the Civ Fan Community.
  • New Civilizations: The expansion pack includes ten new civilizations, such as Portugal, Babylon and Netherlands and their associated unique units and buildings.
  • More Civilization Leaders: Sixteen new leaders including leaders for the ten new civilizations, as well as additional leaders for existing civilizations.
  • Corporations: A new gameplay feature that allows players to create corporations and spread them throughout the world. Each corporation provides benefits in exchange for certain resources.
  • Espionage: Now available much earlier in the game, this expanded feature offers players many new ways to spy on opponents, stir citizen unrest and defend their government’s secrets.
  • Events: New random events such as natural disasters, pleas for help, or demands from their citizens will challenge players to overcome obstacles in order for their civilizations to prosper.
  • New Wonders: Five new wonders await discovery including the Statue of Zeus, Cristo Redentor, Shwedagon Paya, the Mausoleum of Maussollos, and the Moai Statues.
  • Expanded Space Victory: Winning the race to Alpha Centauri will now require more strategic planning and tactical decision making.
  • Apostolic Palace: The United Nations will become available earlier in the game, providing a way for players to win a diplomatic victory earlier. New resolutions will also be added which will expand the available diplomatic options.
  • Advanced Starts: A major fan request, this new feature will enable players to “buy” components of a custom-tailored empire and begin play in the later part of the game, allowing them to experience many of the new features of the expansion pack in a shorter amount of time.
  • Enhanced AI: The AI has received many enhancements, making it tougher to beat on the higher difficulty levels. The ways in which the AI will attempt to achieve victory have also been expanded.
This comes out in the States on the 23rd July. Hopefully, it comes out in England at the same time. Not sure if Australia still have delayed release dates on pc games.
I am going to buy this the day it comes out. Looks mighty impressive.

Your workers have discovered a source of Marijuana, a natural resource near Amsterdam.

lol - Your city is not producing any Culture. Building a red light district will help increase your culture. Build a red light district at the next opportunity or continue using road side hookers?

OK - I just purchased Civ 4 after remembering everyone raving about it. I have two assignments left to do and then my nights are reasonably free (aside from that whole quality time with spouse thing). Any tips for a rookie?

Sustainable expansion.

Keep building as many cities as you can sustain. The first stage of the game is a land and resources grab.

I remember counting the days till this game came out. Haven't played for aaages. Going to a LAN this weekend; I should have thought to get the others to check out this game beforehand... Bit late now; It's not really the kind of game you can learn on the fly and have a quick go of at a LAN :p

No points for guessing who Propagandhi plays as ;)

The Americans?

:p

I hate being the Indians: quick workers but nothing else going for them.

I only play normal games against AI and I have found the best scores come from the following Civ's: Mongols (go for quick expansion), Romans, Greeks and Vikings. I'm only playing Chieftan level though and have had a top score of 30k+, I think as the Mongols.

When starting researches go for: Hunting 1st (if you don't already have it) and then build 2 scouts ASAP, Mysticism (again if you don't have it) and by then Mediation will already be discovered so go for Poytheism to get the Religion first and then Masonry which will let you discover Monotheism so you get Judaism before anyone else and that's when I convert to Judaism.

Seeing this thread just made me re-install the damn thing haha. There goes my chance of a balanced social life..

Do you mean spreading religions? I generally don't worry about any other religion except the one I've picked - usually Judaism or Catholicism.

I'd rather spend my moola creating buildings or units rather than spreading other religions.

I don't get the whole religion thing. Do you just want 1 religion or is it advantageous to start more than 1?

It doesnt hurt to be the founder of as many religions as possible.

You can use your missionaries to cause rebellion in enemy cities etc...

But yeah, like TtT said, there are more important priorities early in the game.

Cheers guys. What about Wonders? Are they particularly advantageous or are they more a distraction from the main game of trying to dominate? So far, I've played on the two lowest levels and so I've been able to conduct wars and build pretty much every wonder but when you get to the harder stages, do you need to pick and choose which wonders to build?

I always try and set up one city to build as many wonders as possible and usually it's the first or second city.

I always go for Stonehenge asap so I have a monument in each city which keeps borders at bay. I then go for Oracle which after about 30 goes comes down quite substantially and by then I've got at least 2-3 founding religions and can easily get Theocracy (Catholicism) which I change to or Philisophy giving me another founding religion.

Early on I will go for that Temple one which gives me the voting rights. This one is pretty important but it's a big one so you'll lose a city producing anything for quite a while.

If I can I like the Pyramids for the Granary upgrades. The Great Wall usually gets taken by other Civs early on and probably not worth it if you have a defensive unit in your cities and have a chariot or melee unit to take care of any visiting Barbarians. Otherwise go for the Great Wall.

Great Lighthouse not too big a deal but I like Statue of Zeus if I can get it.

Obviously I'm only on Chieftan so haven't tried to do all of these at a higher leve which I reckon is near impossible.
