Collingwood has offered Young a contract as an unrestricted free agent. Hawthorn are trying to keep him and have no doubt made him a counter offer. Young came to the Westpac Centre on Monday to have a look at the Collingwood facilities........it's now Thursday......the longer this goes on the more likely it becomes that he will stay with the Hawks.

Anyone have any fresh thoughts or info?

no you pretty much nailed it in a nutshell.

I assume a trade for Young may mean Hawthorn are looking to bring in a FA, therefore negating any FA compo for Young leaving.

If we trade for him with a pick we are not planning to use, Hawthorn give us.....perhaps pay some of Youngs salary and dont lose any compo if they bring in a FA.

I don't see why we'd be doing Hawthorn a favour with allowing them to land a compo pick for Young, who as a FA, is not in top 25% of salaries and therefore wouldn't net them much compensation anyhow.

I also can't see how Hawks would have dough to pay for part of Young's contract after getting Lake.

Where is this pick proposition emanating from can I ask?

And as far as my knowledge of a RFA goes, my understanding is there is one offer put forward to the player by a suitor club and the holding club gets to match it. Don't know how there can be to and fro. Perhaps Hawthorn suspect our offer wouldn't be that high and they can match it. Bit of bluff.

They would get a Compo Pick Anyway

wrong

UFA

Apparently not as he isn't in there top 25% pay bracket.

The system is sort of geared to help fringe players like Young to move around more easily and not be screwed by clubs so much.

Well, that makes all the websites claiming trades even stupider than I thought.

Hawthorn will onyl get shitty compo from the AFL then.

He can literally walk through our doors whenever he wants.

VJKNIGHT recommeded that Site

bloody hell dob me right in.

i recall telling you about them dave, as at the time they were doing a lot of profile pieces on the upcoming draftees on their twitter account - certainly nothing to do with trading.

"The Australian Football League will introduce free agency from the end of 2012. Out-of-contract players who are not within the top 25% paid players at their club will become unrestricted free agents after eight seasons of service at one club; out-of-contract players who are within the top 25% paid players at their club become restricted free agents after eight seasons, then become unrestricted free agents after ten seasons. Clubs receive compensation in the form of draft picks for the loss of out-of-contract free agents. Additionally, players who are delisted will become unrestricted free agents, regardless of length of service; clubs are not compensated for the transfer of such free agennts" - Wikipedia
