The current Ashes win may be a little overrated.

Some of the posters on here could have coached that side to 4-0.

The coach lost the players, it's not new.

Gee, Darren Lehman also 'Lost the players', can Australia ever employ a coach that can 'find them'..?

Perhaps bogan Warne is right; "A Test cricket coach is what transports the players to the venue!"...

I don't think there is much doubt over his capacity as a coach. It's his man management that's come under question.
He managed to man them up after the sheet storm of South Africa that Boof and Cricket Australia allowed to happen.
If some of the Princesses could stand being told to toe the line, then boo hoo to them.

Next coach might get the GOAT Lyon to pitch the ball a touch further up and try to spin it to hit off stump a la Ashwin. Bowled and LBW's so important in this run of sub-continent Tests.

FYI, Ashwin get about 41% of his wickets Bowled/LBW, Lyon 25%

Cricket Australia have made blunder after blunder for 18 years. Gilligan won't have to worry about being the worst sports admin for a while!

I have faith in Gil's ability to lift his game to CA's level.

Wait, 'lift' isn't the right word there...

6 month extension.. aka we don't want you to stick around but don't have the balls to sack you.

Hey JL we just want you around so you can tour the subcontinent and make you’re record look worse so we can fire you with less backlash you cool with that?

Jokes aside I hope we can come to some sort of agreement on this board that regardless of how you felt with the decision, CA haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory with their handling of it

It’s the right call bloke hasn’t shown he can coach overseas yet

When was the last time CA's handling of something covered them in glory as opposed to cow dung

I think the last time I saw some good news about CA was when they announced that men and women would get paid approximately the same on the CA contract. But apart from that pretty ordinary. Even the BBL takeoff is being undone which may start to have more serious impacts

Boof lost the sandpaper and couldn't see what the fuss was about.

How did it work for WA cricket?...didn't win a shield title during Langer's coaching tenure and haven't won a Shield title since ...oh you mean the Perth Scorchers and those 3 titles under JL tenure.....WA cricket is still as lost as ever....post JL.

We have also won numerous 50 over cups as well and producing way over the odds in terms of whiteball representative

Langer had every right to ask for a long term contract and for power back he once had over the team and CA had every right to say hey this won't work as we tried that way before and our players kinda mutinied so lets just move on.

a 6 month contract with langer maintaining a vastly reduced role is pointless either they back langers vision and give him back control of the test side or they accept cummins and other senior player arent suddenly going to be compatible with langers vision and move on if they need 6 more months name an assistant as care taker coach till then.

Once upon a time, the ACB (CA) was the only real paymaster, now they can be sidestepped a la Chris Gayle.

It is a difficult balancing act, getting the best players to play in long form cricket, considering the money available in short form.

It could be argued this Ashes was poor, due to the ECB focussing on short form cricket.

Lost the players while winning is.

That’s why the players come out of this looking like pre-madonnas and CA spent more time trying to spin the story over the past 3 months than doing something about it.

Ange Postecoglou vibes about the whole thing.

Disgusting the amount of white-anting that has gone on in the media.
Concur. As usual most will have to wait until certain future biographies are released to learn the level of media white-anting here? We do know the media succeeded in destroying Paine's career by basically portraying him as a criminal..!
I do look forward to hearing Langer asking the media to clarify their innuendo and speculation and publicly state which players were allegedly not happy with his coaching style - although I doubt he'll be given the platform to do so...

Now, if the media's narrative had been that CA were planning to revise both the captaincy and coaching positions post Ashes (which is plausible given JL's pending contract expiry and Paine intending to retire), then I'd imagine most would support this, but no - controversy, innuendo, rumour and headlines must come first...

If he lost the players while winning, doesn't that mean they're mid-madonnas!

The contracts are nowhere near the same for men and women. The announcement was CA chipping in to ensure equal prizemoney for winning the T20 World Cup.

I can think of a few other worthy initiatives in recent years, but probably more appropriate for another thread.

Yeah CA basically sacked him by dragging their feet with his contract renewal and then offering him a short term contract extension that wasn't what he wanted or thought he deserved. They couldn't outright sack him after he won the Ashes and the T20 World Cup so offering him a short term contract they hoped he would refuse was the next best thing and not make them look as bad.

He clearly didn't have the support of the players either so he really had no other option but to resign and CA knew that too, why take on a short term contract extension when you know that CA and the players really don't want you to stay on and would be looking to sack you at the first opportunity.

Langer was smart enough to see the writing on the wall and chose to resign, he comes away from this looking a lot better than CA and the players.

Selfish enough too, which is fine, people are selfish, but the words were written onto the wall months ago. He could have quietly walked away and instead choose to pursue a contract that was never happening, safe in the knowledge that he would win the PR battle.
