Since when have Brisbane been a superpower. It's not like they won the G/F last year.
I think it was about the time they won 3 GF's consecutively, and made 4 in a row. They maybe passing the baton but certainly not to the Eagles. They can't win a final although they are a chance of getting past 4 goals in one this year.

Actually think the baton will get dropped as there's no superpowers this year on the horizon....very open and even.

West coast has far too much pace for Brisbane, simple as that.

But....
The loins have 3 huge names in this week, maybe 3 of their best, Black has a full half and a bit under his belt (match fitness) and back at home after a flogging.
Matthews won't let it happen again.
I've tipped west Coast, but only just, winning form is good form.

Very well put, it is promising to be a very interesting year. I think other sides should beware of the Power and Lions peaking at the right time of year. As long as they get enough wins to finish as high up the ladders as possible, I think these two teams will be the main challengers this year.

I would get on the lions to give the eagles a drubbing this week.

WCE - but my tipping form is woeful. My 8 yo is beating me!

Seriously, the Weagles have pretty good form at the Gabba so they will be confident. They actually have a team structure too - something Brisbane need to find (& soon!). Unfortunately I feel the margin may also be a tad embarrasing - leading to some uncomplimentary things being said in the Courier Mail (& about time too).

Then again - I could be wrong (I'll ask my son!)

Hey Fatty, who's your son tipping for the Bulldogs/Crows game? :D

So i gather on that line of reasoning that the Wobbles havent been a super power since at least WW 2

From today's Herald-Sun:

''At the start of the season this looked like the clash of the two best midfields in the competition. On form and fitness it's a clear mismatch at the moment, but don't expect the Lions to cough up a fourth straight loss without a fight. Simon Black will be better for the run against the Hawks, and the likely return of Michael Voss is immeasurable. But the Eagles have won their past two games at the Gabba and are flying high. Mark this game down as a potential watershed moment as the passing of the baton of league superpower.''

Whoever wrote this is an even bigger fan than I.
oh great, remember what the lions did to the opposition the last time they were supposed to be "passing the baton"? reiwoltd still hasent recovered

So you think the Lions will win because they'll put WC under pressure?

Great reason!

Pity we have as good a midfield as the Lions and their pressure hasn't been enough in recent encounters. They'll need to do more if they expect to win this time around.

We played high pressure games against Geelong and the Dockers this season and our midfield came out on top. Give me a logical reason why a below-par, out-of-form Brisbane will make WC crack.

Or could you just not think of a decent reason, so you said "they'll put you under more pressure?"

OK, West Coast to put it more succinctly, West Coast have never proven themselves to be a team that can win under pressure, pressure that the Lions will apply a great deal more than in previous meetings, due to their position on the ladder. If you know anything of the Lions recent history you should know what they do when wounded, and to think otherwise is narrowminded.

West Coast only look good on paper, and their easy draw to the season has helped strengthen the myth that they are a premiership contender this year. Mathews has been managing his list well, but from team selections is obviously pulling out all the stops for this game, a marked difference to previous meetings between these two teams.

Lappin by all reports was flying at training, black racked up 20 possesions in only a half against the hawks last week, think what he'll do this week, and Voss is still in excellent form. Wirripunda is under an injury cloud, and Gardiner is seriously underdone.

Comparing a game against the Dockers to a game against Brisbane at home is ridiculous.

The lions are the benchmark team for a reason.

You lost to Hawthorn last week, your form can change that much in just 1 week.It is not like the Lions are a team who play well at home and flop on the road. They have been able to play good both at home and on the road. They might improve slightly but nothing dramatically which is why i think the Eagles will win.

That much can change.

Adding Voss, Lappin, Keating and a match fitter Black to the mix make a big difference.

Everyone expected the Lions to struggle early on anyway, the only upset was the loss against Hawthorn, which can be forgiven to an extent by underestimating their opponent. There will be no underestimation at the Gabba this weekend.

Lets not forget that they have already beaten St Kilda with a lesser team, were only narrowly nudged out by Sydney, and nearly did the deed on Port at AAMI. They havent got the points, but I think they are doing better than people gave them credit for at the start to the season.

Football's full of such turnarounds. Comes down alot to attitude and committment. As Denis Pagan said, footy at this level is played 90% above the shoulder....never more so than in such an even season. How many times did Carlton bounce back the next week and win last year after taking absolute hidings, 100 point ones included. After last week embarrassment the Lions might be stung into action, even if it is only for this week. Could be a bad time to play them, especially at the 'Gabba. Best not write off a side that has played in the last 4 GF's.

in fact, if any team is going to turn around from a shellacking by an average team into the shellacking of a good team, its voss, black, aker, lappin, power and co

theres not much those guys cant do, if they fire

I'm so sick of this crap about the champion team being an unknown quantity, and there being no ceiling on what they're capable of.

This is bullsh*t. The Lions are in poor form, and their 2nd tier hasn't stepped up. They can't turn their form on and off just because they really, really, really want to win.

They dominated the competition because they had quality on every line, a fantastic midfield and a great spine.

The wheel turns. They no longer have the most depth through the middle, and their forward line looks impotent. Matthews has been forced to inject some youth into the side, many of whom aren't yet up to the mark. These 5-6 guys are a liability.

I'm not saying the Lions are gone. I'm not even saying that WC will beat them this week, I just think a lot of the discussion of Brisbane's chances hinges on lazy assumptions and inarticulate, quasi-mystic bullsh*t.

Some of these posters are one step short of producing a ouija board and making scary ghost "whooo-whooo" noises.

There's also this misguided notion that Brisbane's top tier can lift the rest of the team enough to knock off good sides at will. Should be a cracking game, but Brisbane aren't going to smash WC by sheer strength of belief, as many of you people seem to think.

I can't wait for it,

But i think the eagles have the legs, the midfield is really quick, might run all over the lions.

Hope its a tight game

Another blow to the Lions with Charman out and 204cm Cameron Wood now to debut. That means it's now something like 9 players with a grand total of under 35 games between them. West Coast are likely to tear us apart, literally.

You're suggesting this outweighs their bad form and diminished personnel? This is bullsh*t. Those 4 GFs count for nothing at the moment.

I don't think anyone's writing them off.

You're manufacturing reasons why their chances should be judged differently to those of other teams.

Oh no, I'm so scared of the Brisbane Lions. What do you have to say now?

How good is it :D

4-0 and 8goals up at half time vs. Brisbane :D

Our midfield is amazing, down back banners still has it and glass hunter bones all look good. Up forward we finally have a target at CHF, one thing we have really never had, so many times over the years we've fallen down across half forward but hansen really gives us something.

I know its early and we still have to peform in finals, but im just so happy at the way things are turning out :D

not much game talk. lions getting deservedly spanked. 8 goals down at half time, probably heading for a 70+ point loss, and to drop below hawthorn to 15th. a bomber win (i'm not confident) on monday and the lions will be stone motherless.

battle for the spoon next week at the dome, bombers v lions. welcome back browny. we'll draw a line in the sand and smash ya :)

edit. just saw there are two games threads. surely mods only should start threads here?
