Good bloke
You know the one I mean. ;)

They just replayed it on WLF.
My god, what was that maggot thinking?

Anyway, does anyone remember the score and time the mark took place?

I think we were 7 points down with 4 minutes to go.

For old times sake.

BTW Best of luck to Leigh in his 200th game this weekend. Much deserved.

it happened just before 3qtr time and we were about 7-8pnts up at the time, crucial mistake, still gives me nightmares

della!

was reading an article on him in the Herald Sun a couple of days ago, and reminded me of his pancreas injury last year and how he has to take tests every few months now. the guy cops a lousy run w/ injuries.

With the knowledge that he left due to certain circumstances, but not knowing exactly what they were, I find it hard to really bag the guy for leaving. However, I am thankful that we got some handy players in return and have lost any real detestation I had for him a few years ago. Well done on 200 games Leigh, you were robbed of a car.

...maybe even a Premiership medal

He would have kicked the goal and put us 14 pts up at 3qtr time.. We would have had all the momentum...Adelaide would have been out of the finals series and who knows what could have happened next!

His reason was that guys like Couch didnt give him the respect he needed in order to captain the side.

Would be hard with those players not behind you.

Seems to be the main reason from what I understand.

Do you guys buy that?

1997 SF against Adelaide at Football Park

Great mark that wasn't paid by our best friend the umpires. Never will be forgotten

I was only 8 but i remember watching the game. i was a t a friends place and he was 12/13 at the time and he went ******* so i knew it was a big deal. Who would Geelong of been playing the following week?

From memory it was Footscray(?) in the Prelim and then they beat St. Kilda in the GF and we all should know that we owned Footscray in finals during the 90s :D

I remember hearing Malcolm Blight say (after Adelaide had won the GF) that he thought whoever won that Semi-Final would have gone on to win the flag. So in Blights mind, Geelong win and we win the 1997 Grand Final!

Oh the humanity!

We copped it from the umps that night! I nearly cried when the ump didn't pay that. I have no doubt he would have goaled from where he took it as well. 45 out on a 45 degree angle.

Further proof that the Crows had lady luck on their side that year.

Grant Vernan (sp?)

Ah, the man at the helm at the time. Just by looking at the passage, how could that have been play on? Look, I know umpires make mistakes, but he was the only one contenting the mark and it was a clean grab.

From memory, it was in the third quarter and I believe we were leading and went on to lead by eight points at three-quarter time. We seemed to hold dominance for a good portion of that match and dropped our bundle in the last quarter.

The what ifs…

Personally I believe we were the best team in 1997 and if we had have knocked off the Crows that night we would have been hard pressed to lose the flag that year. The season was so open that year, as the Crows (4th) won the premiership. There were no standout leaders and had have we only boosted our % by 2%, we would have finished top and faced the Lions at home (they knocked us off that season at the ‘GABBA), with the potential to win and have a week off.

We would have played the Bulldogs at the MCG the following week (yes, who knows what would have happened) and they were knocked off in dramatic circumstances (last quarter fade out) against the Crows.

We did beat St. Kilda during the year that year and would have played them in the Grand Final. Our finals experience would have been tenfold that of St. Kilda and surely we couldn’t have lost five grand finals…

Plenty of variables – I mean having to play the Kangas under lights at the MCG on a Sunday night for a home final didn’t go down well.

Or maybe it just wasn’t our year… Redemption is this year!

Also, IIRC, was there a contentious goal umpiring decision that went against us and was paid by about 43,500 umpires?

Yep, I think it was Sholly that kicked it and it was about a metre over the line before it was touched and the goal umpire and all the ferals over there paid it touched.....i think but could have that a bit muddled up

8 years ago..........yikes :(
