It's an abomination that bands like Coldplay, Oasis, U2 etc have sold 20x more records than bands like The National, The Walkmen, Arcade Fire, Wilco & Fleet Foxes.
*
If you were to combine all of Colplay's, Oasis's and U2's talent, it still wouldn't add up to the talent, heart and soul a guy like Matt Berninger has in his little finger. It's an abomination.
*
The ciritcs savage bands like Oasis, U2 and Coldplay for being generic, repetitious, derivative, soulless and money driven, and so they should. They are utterly horrible. Unadulterated filth.

That's just my opinion though. Many people obviously think differently, as the bands I have just slammed have sold in excess of 200 million records combined.

I don't have a problem with u thinking Coldplay or Oasis or U2 are mainstream crap. I don't have a problem with people who don't listen to mainstream music at all. It's the "majority of the general public are dumb" line that leaves me thinking you think your musical taste makes you superior. I don't mind Coldplay, I love Oasis so I guess that just makes me a dumb member of the general public. I also like plenty of bands not considered mainstream including your beloved Fleet Foxes but I guess it's too late for me to be saved.

Arcade Fire winning the Grammy might put them in the mainstream, then you're stuffed :)

Why when someone expresses a distaste for mainstream music are they automatically declared a musical snob/elitist?

I don't assume someone who doesn't like mainstream music is a snob or elitist. When they imply those who do like it are dumb I come to that conclusion. It's basically the definition of it

I take it back.

I just heard the sublime 'Every Teardrop is a Waterfall', and it is glorious.

My humblest apologies.

I see your point also but I didn't create this thread someone with similar taste in music to mine did, maybe they don't have the same taste as mine but we both obviously detest Coldplay.

People are most certainly free to enjoy the music they like, I am intrigued as to why they feel a need to defend it?

Why do you assume I am looking down on people? I am expressing an opinion the same as you do, you must just have an inferiority complex???
OK I aplogize I thought you created the thread.

I think you can put it down to the fact, that it is almost cool these days to hate Coldplay. If you have genuine reasons to dislike the band then that's fine, but some peolple seem to just follow like sheep and say they hate Coldplay because others do it.

You say 'Why aren't mainstream FM Radio music lovers the same?' in regards to being tolerant of the music you listen to, but the go on to make hateful comments about 3 of the most successful comercial musicians in the world. That doesn't sound very tolerant to me.

Which bands are you a fan of for the record?

The national are okay, but the rest...p-l-e-a-s-e. You sound so pretentious .

They dont have large commercial success for many reasons, but foremost because the wider public rate them like you rate coldplay, shite

So because they are bigger they are better? I lol'd.

I don't care how I sound. I have already stated that the majority of the general public in my opinion, are just dumb.

Anyhow music critics certainly agree with me. Look at any of those bands reviews on Metacritic and they are always in the top few for the year they were released, just like the Arcade Fire album reviews I attached below.

I would take a music critics opinion, over Joe Blow who lives in Sunshine, does a menial job, earns 65k a year and listens to generic, soulless, faceless, bland music like U2, Oasis & Coldplay. Each to their own though. I know what I like and you know what you like.

I personally find bands like Oasis, U2, Coldplay & The Foo Fighters offensive in every sense of the word.

LOL. I don't think even I find Coldplay offensive to that extent....:D

What menial job pays $65k a year???

I have never heard Arcade Fire, but I take it they much more talented than Coldplay

What menial job pays 65k a year? Some telemarketing jobs would, some night shift security jobs would, a manager of KFC would probably be on around that. I dunno.

And yup Arcade Fire >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Daylight>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Coldplay

If those jobs paid that much money, people wouldn't bother going to university.

I dunno. I have a friend who works in sales as a telemarketer for an electricity company and earns 90k ( a 60k base + 30k commissions a year ). Sales jobs pay very well if you're good at them. No formal qualifications needed.

I wouldn't like to work a job like that, because I hate trying to sell stuff. But if you have the gift of the gab, you can earn decentish money in sales.

Likewise. I hate talking to people and being around people in general. People in sales who have the stamina to deal with that kind of interaction deserve all the money they can get (except for real estate agents, who are glorified spruikers)

Being good at sales is a skill which will be monetarily rewarded. Working in fast food or basic admin/call centre will probably be award wage - which would be closer to 40k pa, ie nowhere near 70k.

Ok cool. I'm a bit out of touch with all this kind of stuff.

One Coldplay would not equate to a quarter of any of those bands.

Pretty harsh lumping U2 and Oasis in with Coldplay.

Not a fan of some of their recent stuff but U2 made some great albums in the eighties and early nineties that were critically acclaimed, Achtung Baby in particular is a brilliant album and completely reinvented U2's sound. Likewise with Oasis, their more recent stuff has been mainly rubbish but Definitely Maybe and What's the Story Morning Glory are great albums that were critically acclaimed.

You can maybe accuse Coldplay of being generic, repetitious, derivative, soulless and money driven but not U2 and Oasis, well at least not with their earlier albums anyway.

What I find particularly offensive is the self serving bullshit you've just served up. It reeks of a false sense of a superior judgment and taste in what constitutes good music, or otherwise. Further too,you somehow believe that suburbia's great unwashed are to dumb and lowly to appreciate bands that you deem worthy of greater attention and recognition..... and instead listen to and appreciate those you' believe are ' offensive'

I'm no fan of bands like the foo and Oasis and have grown indifferent to U2 and the alike, but I understand that music, first and foremost is a subjective experience and what may float my boat may be razor blades to someone else's ears .
However I dont carry on like the pretentious self serving windbag that you obviously are......

In a previous post, you stated the majority of the general public think the bands I like are shite. I basically responded with " I don't care what some tyrekicker out in Sunshine thinks and that music critics opinions hold more weight with me". That's all.
