Maynard James Keenan
Frank Sinatra
Bono (he is not a great singer, but I do like his voice)
Gil Scott-Heron
Bernard Fanning
Josh Rouse

Among others.

UNIT: Actually, I'd easily say Chris Martin is a better singer than Thom Yorke. Both technically (without a doubt) and aesthetically. Both have pretty pathetic falsettos, though. Compare their weak, out-of-tune falsetto to someone with a truly strong falsetto like Josh Rouse and you'll see what I mean.

Exactly.

Thom tries so hard to emulate Jeff Buckley (the greatest voice ever) it pi**es me off to no end. Like nails down a blackboard.

Maynard is equal fave for mine.

I'll give lengthy replies to posts that deserve it. One line posts which include deliberately mispelled swear words just to avoid the auto-sensors deserve one line responses. Well actually they deserve less than that.

Trying to take the high road after that is a bit of a laugh :)

You trying to take the high road in a Coldplay-bashing thread is a whole lot more of a laugh. :)

It is indisputable that Thom Yorke's voice is fxcking awful.

Agree with you here mate.

Radiohead are one of the most overrated bands of all time and Thom Yorke is an evil little elf.

Coldplay's first two albums were the shiznitz. New stuff is tripe, sadly.

Any bloke who calls his kid Apple should start setting alarm bells off in people's heads in the first place

I tried a couple of times to listen to OK Computer to see what all the fuss was about. But that singing was just too awful and whiny for me, really irritating.

One of the worst comparisons ever. Buckley is one of my all-time faves too, and he's probably got the best voice I've heard, but Yorke is a completely different style to him.

Boo-urns to all of you that say Thom Yorke is no good!

What's wrong with taking the high road in a Coldplay bashing thread? Especially against people like you.

Besides my clueless friend I never actually bashed Coldplay. I like Coldplay, Parachutes is one of my favourite albums, but I just don't agree that Chris Martin's voice has anywhere near the range and the power of Thom Yorke. In fact one of the biggest criticism of the last three Radiohead albums is that they don't utilise his voice often enough. It's a instrument most bands can only dream of having.

It's one of those albums you have to listen to a number of times before you get into it, most of the great albums are like that. I was the same originally so I put it on a shelf and didn't listen to it for a year, then I decided to pick it up one day to give it another go and it just blew me away. It's now my favourite album.

Totally agree. I first played OK Computer and despised it. Then slowly, insidiously, you begin to 'get it'. The White Stripes new album is another example of that (for me). Its about people making music thats ahead of the listener and requires true investment in time and effort to truly appreciate it.
Also, i agree with whoever said it first on here....anyone who makes the all to easy but ultimately ridiculous comparison, of comparing Thom Yorke's voice to Jeff Buckley clearly has no idea. Thats why people listen to Coldplay. It doesnt challenge you. Its like the aural equivalant of a Big Mac, you put your money down and you get what you ask for. There will be no suprises or pitchforks in the road...just more safe, inoffensive, unchallenging tripe that you wont be listening to in 10 years time. To me Coldplay really are that meaningless, that offensive. They are simply the English equivalant of one of those Matchbox 20/Train/Tonic rubbish bands that sell like hotcakes to brain dead American's who think the aformentioned 'artists' are edgy. Thats why Coldplay has cracked the states. Its not due to the merit of their music or live shows but the limited intellect of middle America.

Now this...

From www.nme.com

COLDPLAY are planning a duet with RICHARD ASHCROFT at LIVE 8, it’s been reported.

The ex-The Verve singer has recently supported Coldplay on a handful of dates on their European tour, and the two have come up with the idea of performing The Verve’s 1997 classic ’Bitter Sweet Symphony’ together, according to The Sun newspaper.

Coldplay are set to perform at the London Hyde Park date of Live 8 this Saturday (July 2).

Please Richard.....NO!!!!!!!!! DONT DO IT!!!!!! Coldplay and Chris Martin are as worthy of sharing the stage with Richard Ashcroft to perform Verve songs as The Spice Girls. Truly shameful if it happens.

Trust me, I was in no way comparing the two. There is no comparison. I said 'tries to emulate'. In other words, imitate, follow. He fails miserably.

Both Thom York and Chris Martin are white, balding or very shaved head skinny dudes.

Some of their music is so angst ridden it's painful. But sometimes good.

Get some meat on ya bones and maybe the music would be more meaty.

I don't mind Coldplay or Radiohead per sa :)

I know its ridiculous isnt. But then again, so is the notion that Coldplay come within cooeee of Radiohead as artists and musicians.
Who else saw 'Gwynnie' and bub off stage at Live 8 during Coldplay's set? :o

This sums Coldplay up quite nicely IMO.

Why I Hate Coldplay.
I've read a lot of reviews recently for Coldplay's 'new' album, X&Y. Most of them stating just how nice Coldplay are, and how lovely their music sounds. Their new single is fairly listenable, in a way, and they're the first British guitar band in ages to get somewhere in America.

So why do I detest them with every fibre of my being?

Well, it's a hard question, but one I can answer. For a start, they have no literally ambition whatsoever. I'm not talking about wanting commercial success, but rather a desire to stretch their abilities, their audience, and the format of music. They've risen from an unspectacular and overly insular indie band (with a couple of distinguishable singles) to an unspectacular and overly rich pop band within a fairly short space of time, so someone must like them, or so you'd think. But that's the thing - no-one really does. Coldplay are the perfect band for those people who don't really take an interest in music, but think they need a couple of pop culture items in their living room to accompany their digitally remastered Shawshank Redemption DVD and paperback copy of The Da Vinci Code. It's this coffee table, background music mentality that is killing innovation and keeping the radio interest-free. Not that it's new, but it's certainly not right.

One thing to note is the wildly varying reviews for the album, which range from 'poor' to 'classic'. This highlights exactly what is wrong with Coldplay, namely the way they meld cliche into cliche so effortlessly that they could do it forever, and no-one would ever know if it was any good. Despite claiming Thom Yorke et al as an influence, they are really the anti-Radiohead, taking all development out of popular British music and replacing it with perfectly boring songs about abo********ely nothing. I really can't be ********ed to search for some Coldplay lyrics, but if you have a few minutes, try it.

And yet, three patchy albums into a half-baked career, Coldplay are now possibly the biggest band in the world. Which is undoubtedly a problem for us, as comsumers, because the signal it sends out loud and clear to record companies is 'we love mediocrity'. So what do we get? Endless hours of emotion-by-numbers from bands like Snow Patrol, Keane and Athlete, none of whom will have Coldplay's success, but all of whom could make average records for average people for the rest of their lives.

So here's something; rather than waste the best part of an hour, and an even better part part of fifteen quid buying X&Y, check out British Sea Power's album Open Season, which is pretty much everywhere for a tenner. Same influences, more originality, and it's actually good.

Most pommy bands of the last 5-6 years are frointed by soft cok lefties.
They talk thru their ars and believe themselves.
Cant wair until he dies.

Get your hand off it Figboy.

To suggest that guys name amongst Bonham and Hendrix in itself is a demonstration of your lack of knowledge of music.

He's not a quarter of the man/misician` they were.

I was never a fan of Coldplay but they won me at Live 8 somewhat. I don't know why, maybe it was early on and I was still excited about the ocassion. But they were good and Bittersweet Symphony was great ... Chris introduced it as "the best song ever written sung by the best singer ever born" or something like that ... I thought they vowed never to sing that song again because of some record company dispute?

Anyway it was great.

See thats what i mean. If its Noel Gallagher talking like that in the NME or something then fair enough, we all know he is full of it, and we love him for it. But when Chris Martin trys to do the cocaine fuelled bravado thing, (knowing that Chris Martin has more likely just had a lentyl burger and a yoghurt rather than a 12 inch line of Charlie and 12 double jack daniels and cokes) it just comes across as pathetic, desperate and false attempt at appearing all rock n' roll. This is the guy who claims he didnt lose his virginity till shortly after the release of Parachutes, and said he still likes to play with his old Transformers.

On a side note Bittersweet Symphony isnt even the best Verve song, let along the best 'ever' song. The best one would be Sonnet IMO. 'Yeeeeeeessssssssssss there's love if you want it.......dont sound like a Sonnet...'.

It wasn't a "cocaine fuelled bravado thing" it was a genuine admiration for the song and the man. Maybe it comes across that way to you but to me not all rock stars have to be the 12 double jack and coke noel gallagher, pete doherty type.

I actually think Sonnet is a shocker. It's just a sad copy of Lucky Man with really bad lyrics.

On the pop side of things The Drugs Don't Work is their best song easily.

Bittersweet Symphony is a f---ing fantastic song. One of my all time favourites. Better than Sonnet IMO.

Its ok, i wouldnt say its a great 'song'. Take out that famous string arrangement and its pretty average as a piece of songwriting. Thats just my opinion. History from the 'A Northern Soul' album is better....
